One of the oldest universities in Europe, Coimbra University is beatiful and alive, with students all around, even in the old buildings. The university square is amazing!

“Location, Location, Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is stunning.

The university sits high above the town, and the main building is a three sided palace around a huge plaza. It looks out over the town and countryside, and must be wonderful place to study.

The highlights are the library, the main hall, and the plaza. Another delight is watching the students roam about in fully black gear - just like the first hogwarts film.

“absolute must”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

Coimbra is a fabulous old city, with many attractions: monasteries, cathedrals, yet the University of Coimbra beats them all. Its faculties are located in different parts of the city, and to get to the main building you have to climb to the top of the hill. Not an easy way, especially in the heat, and quite symbolic! As you mount the Monumental Stairs, you see the statue of the founder of the University, King Dinis, and when you finally step onto the courtyard, there’s another one - João III, who transferred the Portuguese university to Coimbra, awarded scholarships and did a lot more for the university. Tremendous old buildings form the tree walls of the courtyard, and instead of the fourth there’s an observation deck from where you have a great view of the city and Mondego river. The tour ticket includes a visit to several places; there’s no guide, so you explore them in any order. The Chapel impresses with light joyful colours, so different from all Portuguese igrejas.
Tip: There’re no audio guides but all the officials in the modern library, the Chapel, Joanina willingly answer your questions. And don’t miss the entrance to academic prison in the modern library, you can go down and imagine what it was like to be an inmate for stealing the Cabra.

“Lucky are the students who go to university there”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

Monumental setting, well organised for the tourist, and amazing views over the city from the top of the "Cabra" (goat), the old bell tower that dominates the square.
The stairs to go up are (very) narrow, but your effort will be rewarded once you et to the top.
At ground floor, the small and beautiful chappel has a BIG surprise to you, with an amazing big pipe organ. I guess that when it is played all the wall must tremble...
You must get your tickets at the Biblioteca, which is at your left before entering the large square. It is not easy to see the "Ticket Office" sign.
You should go for a visit.

The old university is incredible, it was a palace before. There is an incredible library, chapel and a hall. Tickets are sell inside the previous building. And modernd and big faculty building. Also, unfortunately there is forbidden to take pictures inside.
