5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

I just left the hotel....and it really deserves a review.
The hotel is located in an easy access area, in an old chateau built in the 1800's.
The place is full of history and legends including the famous Ines de Castro legend.
I stayed in room 19 (Voltaire) which is kind of old (not really modern, small TV, manual air conditioner) but with VERY confortable beds.
The room is quite big (more than 20m) with 2 small windows with a view to the inside gardens.
I know there are rooms with a better view to the famous gardens in the hotel (wich btw are one of the city's attraction). Guests can visit the gardens for free.
For golf players, they offer nice golf structure.
Breakfast if good....I wouldnt say amazing, but fair enough.
The pool is large and very clean....a place to kick back and relax.
You will also find free parking inside the hotel.
The staff is very polite and helpful.
I would recommend the hotel for families and couples looking for romantic places.
DONT FORGET to try the hotel's restaurant. UNFORGETABLE.
My only complain is that I coulndt have Internet access from my room....

The price is right. It is worth every cent. Wonderful landmark with good rooms, very quiet (even the guests are quiet). It is definitely worth staying in. Breakfast is superb and included in the price. Beautiful and welcoming pool and spa. Low note is that internet is only available in the living room; a hotel like this needs to offer wireless connection in all rooms. Would be willing to come back several times. Not very close to the Coimbra attractions but a taxi ride (don't drive, parking is very scarce. I found the restaurant a little pretentious and expensive, when compared to the hotel rates, although it does carry one star from Michelin.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights as part of our fly-drive holiday in a standard Garden wing room on B+B. On arrival, we felt the hotel somewhat oversells itself - it's 'extensive gardens' aren't that extensive/cultivated (and overlooked by tower blocks), the newer buildings are strange architectural fit with original historic building and it's anything but a picturesque walk into the town. However, the hotel wins on its peaceful, refined ambience and helpful staff - blissfully comfortable bed and the original building has style (albeit the glory is faded in parts). So we left as converts and would stay there again

Hotel Pros
* Peaceful ambience, staff service
* Comfy bedroom with fresh flowers, bath robes and own garden seating
* Nice pool
* Excellent buffet breakfast choice
* Main historic building and Ines/Pedro romance

Hotel Watchouts
*Hotel is c20 minute walk through drab estate and along main road to Coimbra centre which is dark at night (alternatively, there is large car park just before crossing the main bridge into town)
* Remember it's a 4*, not 5* hotel and embrace its quirks

Comments on Coimbra
We loved the atmosphere of the old town. Get a taxi up to the University on the hill and walk down, especially if hot day. Old University worth seeing but not as impressive as expected. Old Cathedral exceeded expectations. Enjoyed excellent home cooking at Adega Funchal (good chanfana) and especially Ze Neto (superb tripe), both in Rua Azeiteiras

We, me and my wife are the Relais Chateaux lovers, and we have stayed nearly 30 Relais Chateaux. Hoever, this hotel really deserves it. Namely, the service, particularly the receptionist adequately responded to our inquiries such as how to get to Conimbriga, etc. The room we stayed was No.7 which was really classic suite room with antique futnitures. The cuisines of the restaurant were a bit nouvelle cuisine based on the Poryuguese one, very refined ones, particularly the black pork plate(Porco prete) was really tasty, comparable to Iberico pork, and the Foie Gras was surpriisngly tasty, better than one in France. The ambience of the restaurant was nealy perfect, we have dined, enjoying the view of the small garden where there are a prety fountain. Furthermore, the hotel owns the very famous garden from which was the reminiscence of the 18c story of Pedro king and Ines.
Anyway, we would like to come back some time!

Room Tip: The room in the main house must be reserved.

Beautiful old hotel with outstanding public rooms to wander filled with antiques. Rooms were perfect. Only difficulty was in finding the hotel, there is a very small sign and you have to go through an electric gate that you pull up to and it opens. We drove around for quite a bit looking for the hotel entrance until a nice pedestrian pointed it out to us. Staff spoke perfect English, was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was outstanding. Do not miss wandering through the gardens, they are exquisite.

We were in Quinta das Lágrimas in June'10, for a long weekend. It is a lovely place, a beautiful palace, full of history and character. We stayed in a garden-room, which isn't such a great thing for a hotel of that cathegory. It's small/medium size, and the wc needs an upgrade. A good thing of the room is that it was a balcony which gave us access to a beautiful and quiet garden, with lots of sun entering in our room. Nice! But for a Relais & Chateaux, we expect more from the room. There is a new wing, named SPA wing, but I didn't like it, because in my opinion it collides with the beautiful architecture of the palace. We had dinner in Arcadas Restaurant and we didn't think that it's so special to deserve 1 michelin star. But it's nice, even so. The surroundings are very charming and magic...don't lost the visit to Pedro and Ine's gardens and wood. Very nice swimming pool. We did Pedro and Ines massage in the SPA. It was nice. Overall, we liked Qta das lágrimas. A special note to the former recepcionist (who was doing the night shift). Very very very king and professional!! He took us a lot of photos, showed the hotel and told us the history of the building.... He is a great value for the hotel.

Room Tip: Don't stay in old wing/garden-rooms.
