After the drive from Porto we arrived too late for lunch and this is a great spot that serves food all day long. Don’t wait for a table outside, go in to see the interior, which still retains the architecture from the adjoining church. The vaulted ceiling and wooden panels are wonderful and the staff provides table service. Very fast and friendly waiters will serve simple and delicious sandwiches. Go for the ‘toasted’, it’s like a Panini, warm with melted cheese and very good.
We stopped here again after a long afternoon for a drink and saw their notice for a Fado show on Saturday evenings at 10:00. (FYI; in Coimbra, Fado is only preformed by male singers; I learned that on this trip). After dinner we returned to Café Santa Cruz to see the Fado performance, and even though we do not understand Portuguese we really enjoyed the music, what a great end to a day.
