“Friendly budget hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

We stayd 7 nights in this clean and friendly budget hotel. Comfortable beds and a balcony with street view. Breakfast was good, coffe/tea, juice, bread, cheese, ham, youghurt, cornflakes and fresh fruit salad every morning, The coffee from the machine wasn't good but the staff made an espresso when i asked. Breakfast room was small, but the area has 2 sections so guests can spread out a bit.
Location is good ,close to all necessary things in Ponta Delgada. Nice terrace upstairs with panorama view over Atlantic sea, mountains and the town. Unfortunately no chairs or tables on the terrace. Internet not available throghout the building (I knew that when I booked).

Using various different search engines I found this hotel close to the University in town. spent 3 nights on first stay and 5 nights on second stay. It gives discounts if staying more than 3 nights. It's a small budget style residencia, so it very simple, but clean and the staff are very friendly. Most of the pictures online are taken from the back of the hotel, where there is a free parking in a large car park, and access to main roads out are simple, for those wanting a touring base for San Miguel.

Rooms are clean, old style furnishings with a fan in each room for those hot humid nights. I had room at back of hotel on third floor, and these didn't have balconies, but maybe a bit quieter, as no road noise.

There's a small lift, which serves all 3 floors, it's slow but gets there. There's a roof top terrace, for those wanting to see more (assuming that the clouds are not down over the mountains).

Breakfast a mix of different breads - I preferred the Furnas muffin style bread which was slightly sweetened. Ham, cheese, jams. Juices and a coffee machine that needs experimenting to find the right mix, as cappuccino seemed to include hot chocolate as well...more like a mocca.

Internet is available in lobby and in breakfast area, but not in the rooms. There is a small bar in the breakfast area in the evening, with beer and spirits, but no wine. Quite cheap, and hence a nice place to sit and talk with new friends.

There's a little bakery next door, with lovely pastries such as custard tarts, which is open very late in the evenings on some days of the week.

Staff helpful finding tours, taxis and pointing in the direction of restaurants.

No evening meals, so I'd go to the Restaurant El Museo for a meal or the little bar down the road if looking for a quick snack, or head down to town centre for one of many good eateries.

Room Tip: Take a back room to avoid street noise or a front room if you want a balcony.

I stayed here 3 nights. The staff are helpful, the breakfast is simple but good although the coffee dispensing machine does not put out the best stuff. The breakfast area has 2 sections so diners can spread out a bit. Beware of hanging things out to dry on the 3rd floor balcony. It's uncovered and frequent rains means your clothes will be even wetter than before. The plastic balcony chairs had accumulated street dirt and looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a while. The elevator was small and slow. Most of the time I did not bother using it as the stairs were wide and faster. For some sunshine and quiet, go to the rooftop patio. There's only a couple of chairs there but was deserted for the afternoon I spent there.

Room Tip: If wifi access from your room is important, choose a room on the first or second floor.

Overall our stay at Residencial Sete Ciadades was pleasant. The location is good with only a short walk down to the waterfront. The rooms are cleans and all have balconies (although the ones on the 3rd floor are not covered so can not be enjoyed if it rains). There is free wireless internet, but keep in mind it doesn't seem to work above the second floor (we were in a 3rd floor room), however there is a common area on the first floor that you can sit and use it if it doesn't work in your room. There is a simple free breakfast (ham, cheese, bread, cereal, coffee, juice) which was nice. Parking is also free which is great if you decide to rent a car. I would recoomend this to anyone looking for a budget, no frills places to stay in Ponta Delgada.

We spent 4 nights at Sete Cidades. It was very comfortable and clean. The staff were friendly and the room spotlessly clean with plenty of space. Good breakfast. Pity it was fully booked when we returned from Furnas or we would have stayed another 3 nights.
How about a kettle in the room - I wake up early and like a cup of coffee.
