4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

This hotel is located 5 min from the airport and a walk away from Ponta Delgada city center.
The hotel has an oriental style decoration, There is a beautiful oriental garden in the center.
There is no parking fee at the hotel garage. All the public areas area spacious clean...you feel like they shine, My room was an interior room but had a nice and calm view the oriental garden. There is a mini in the room.
The breakfast has tasteful and good selection.
There another where you can relax, use the swimming pool or play tennis.
There is wireless internet but you have to pay 5€ fee dally,

We were booked for this hotel which included breakfast. It was situated away from the downtown area which made for a quieter setting. The rooms were good as was the breakfast selection. The hotel was very clean and spacious and quite large with great courtyard layout. The only downside was the internet service - there was none and was fee based. The fee was based on a per computer fee structure and at 5 euro a day per computer which is very unreasonable. This hotel also has a Japanese style decor which was odd given it location - but it was well done inside and out. Our room was on the top floor and had a great view of the ocean.

Room Tip: If internet service is a must it could prove costly depending on how many users you have.

This hotel was perfectly located for touring around the island. Very easy to get onto the main road, plenty of parking and near the airport. Don't let this put you off, there is no aircraft noise at night. We weren't there during the day but didn't think this was the busiest airport.

The main town is only a few minutes walk away. There is a super bar/restaurant just down the road called Cervejaria A Favorita which does a mean steak and fresh fish and great salad.

The public areas of the hotel are very nice. Tastefully furnished and clean and peaceful. The pool area is nice but smoking is allowed anywhere outside so we found ourselves being driven indoors the odd hour we tried to use it. The pool isn't heated for most of the year so way too cold for me to use but they do have an indoor pool too.

The rooms are average and have no tea making facilities. The beds are are really hard but we slept well regardless.

Staff were all very friendly and helpful.

We loved the Azores. Beautiful place for walking and chilling out.

Will be back to stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Pick a garden view room

The Royal Garden lives up to the 4 star rating in every way; for example, we chose the good value for money breakfast and dinner dining option. The breakfast buffet has a good selection including freshly prepared fruit from the islands and although the noise level can be a bit high, there's a quieter option of tables in an adjoining room with a little further to walk to the buffet. The evening 3 course dinner selection changed every night with meat and fish options, loads of salads and pastas; 5 courses if you had the soup and an extra helping of the 3 other puddings you didn't try the first time. And another bowl of fruit salad to finish makes 6 courses. A big plus is the free underground parking and close to the airport location on the edge of town; the noise levels were low with the hotel set back from the main road; every room has a balcony and chairs but ask Reception for one with sun, the inner courtyard rooms facing north didn't see any we thought. The rooms are reasonably sized and towels changed every day even if you try to hang them on towel rails. The staff are very friendly and unobtrusive; we found the Japanese inspired decor and gardens were also up to standard. We would definitely recommend this hotel and stay there on our next visit.

Room Tip: Try to get a south facing room and in the middle of the block for sun most of the day, all rooms are...

This was my first package holiday and I was a bit sceptical to begin with. However, I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. From the smooth and efficient check in at both Gatwick and the Royal Garden Hotel, Sunvil handled everything very well. My first impression of the hotel was very good. It’s modern; the décor is interesting with a marked oriental influence. The staff was polite and were helpful in dealing with our many questions. Our room was a good size, as was the bathroom. One nice touch is that all the rooms facing the inner courtyard have balconies. This is pretty handy for just chilling out and sun bathing if you don’t want to go out and on a very practical level, for drying our swimming costumes! The grounds are nicely landscaped, there’s a decent pool, a tennis court, (which wasn’t open when we were there though), and a small but decent steam room and Turkish bath. Breakfast was decent and there was lots of choice.
Any complaints: The main one was lack of free Wi-Fi. You had to pay a daily fee per device, so if you had a smart phone and a tablet for instance, you had to every day pay to access the Wi-Fi on each device. Pretty expensive. Better to go into the main shopping centre and use their free Wi-Fi. Also, a kettle in the room for the occasional hot drink would be very much appreciated. Apart from that, we had no major complaints to be honest. We would have liked the rooms to be cleaned earlier – they tended to come along quite late in the day – and silly rules like a non-refundable deposit to take towels out of the hotel are just irritating but on the whole, we had a brilliant and restful time.

Room Tip: Try and get a courtyard facing room for the balcony and a view of the landscaped gardens

Excellent 4-star hotel, about a 15-minute walk from the centre of town. So, you might think it is quiet...which it is, but it's also directly below the flight path for the airport, which means a 7am alarm call for everyone. Flights continue until about 10pm.

But, yes, I'd come here again; the hotel has seen better days, and needs a bit of a sprucing up. Numerous scuff marks about the place, bits broken off room furniture, all of which point to a need to do a bit of maintenance.

The hotel is spacious, with many rooms, and that means that it accommodates coach loads of visitors, which in turn means that there are times when you can't get into the lift or the swimming pool, either of them (one indoor, one outdoor). Gym is okay, ample car parking, good WiFi connection at €5 for 24 hours.

Breakfast is great and extensive served in a large room with efficient staff; just come down, give your room number and help yourself. Dinner, however, tends to be a series of buffets...again, well prepared, but limited. The a la carte menu is a puzzle since it hardly has anything on it other than 'Meat', 'Fish', 'Pasta', etc., and I found that the buffet for 2, with wine, came to nearly €80, which for the Azores is a bit much for a hotel buffet. Thankfully, there are plenty of places to eat out in Ponta Delgada.

Room Tip: All rooms have inward facing balconies, overlooking an enclosed garden with fountains.
