“Lovely fort and good museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

The fort and museum are well worth a visit. It is not expensive and you have lots to see. The view from the battlements is great and the fortifications themselves are very picturesque. The museum was stuffed full of guns and other military artefacts, mainly labelled in Portuguese, but as the Portuguese for Uzi is Uzi, it doesnt take much effort to understand what you are looking at ---especially if you have teenage boys in tow to exclaim over the various guns......

“Good for a short visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Very easy walk from the cruise dock, as is most of Ponta Delgada. Just go west (left) from the dock for about six blocks and you are there, standing in front of an old fort that is still in use as a military base. Enter past the formal guard, enter a well-marked room and pay your 2 euro admission. This is a self-guided tour through six or seven display rooms scattered throughout the old fort. You can go through the ancient tunnels and go topside on a small section of the old wall. But remember, this is a small but active military base, so pay heed to the Restricted Access signs!

Across the street from the fort is a plaza shared by the Convent and Church of Our Lady of Hope Santo Cristo, another interesting place to visit.

“Rather disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

It's in the old fort at the western end of the harbour. Most of the displays are of arms and pretty much any description is in Portuguese. Historically it would have been worth having more info displays in multi languages sothat the items and displays could be put into context. But it's only 2 Euros entrance fee ....or 1 Euro if you are a Senior!

If you are in the area this museum is well worth a visit. It is not expensive at €4 and is full of history and interesting facts and is stuffed to the gills with artefacts
