“Canyoning experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

Totally cool activity, if you like a little bit of adventure. Good in any weather, because you will get wet anyway :)
In our group were 10 participants + 2 instructors and the activity was totally safe. Instructors were nice, funny, communicative and didn't push anybody to do something he/she didn't want to do. Jumping and sliding of the waterfalls was quite fast, but the roping down took sometimes too long (for 10 people) and while waiting one started to feel a bit cold in the water/wet suit. It would be superb in smaller group.

But still, this is the best activity you can do on the island!!!

“Whale watching Ponta Delgada”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Guide (Sean) was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Both he and the captain were going to great lengths to make sure we got value for money for our trip.

Total length of trip was 4 hours. Speeding out of the harbour on the zodiac was great fun, especially for my 11 year old. Spent about 15 minutes with a large pod of common dolphins riding the bow on the way out to sea and were accompanied back to shore by a pod of bottlenose dolphins. The highlight was three separate encounters with a total of eight sperm whales, including mother and calf.

The guide was extremely professional and anxious to ensure we all saw as much as we could, encouraging us to move around the boat to see the animals when it was safe to do so. At no point did we feel our safety was compromised. The safety briefing was thorough, life jackets and wet weather gear was provided. The only down side was the diesel fumes from the engine did cause one or two passengers to feel queasy - myself included. However, this was of little importance when compared with seeing a whale calf.

Totally recommend Pico. Great guide, fun boat ride and, above all, whale watching in a manner that was respectful to the animals.

“Not professional”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

Me and my boyfriend booked the Swimming with Dolphins activity in Ponta Delgada. We wanted to do it in Pico, but unfortunately, everything was fully booked the days we spent there. We instead did some whale whatching there. I'm meantoning this fact, because that's how I got the experience about briefing and stuff before going to the sea. At Picos de Aventura, we didn't have ANY briefing. We just got our wet suits and swimming vests. On the boat, we were told that we have a chance of seeing 3 different kinds of Dolphins today. Than, we drove for an hour or so on the sea, without any further information about, if they saw dolphins at all or how long it's gonna take us to find them. When we found them, me and my boyfriend didn't even get a snorkel and a diving mask, we had to aks several times for it. I learned that you have to really follow some rules when approching dolphins. I had the impression that the guys from Picos de Aventura didn't care about these rules. We were approaching the dolphins very fast and every time we went into the water, they quickly disappeared. I heard that if you do it right, dolphins are very curious and they don't swim away from you. One guy hurt himself and had an open wound at his leg. When the girl from Pico de Aventura noticed, she just joked and told him to put the leg into the (salt!)water. She didn't even ask, if he's ok. I don't think this is professional behaving...I wouldn't recommend Picos de Aventura.

“Soaking wet and my camera damage”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

It was all promising, so we were hopeful to have a wonderful trip. We knew that seeing whales was a change but not a promise. We love being on a boat at sea and couldn't wait till the day we actually went. They told in the mail, that they always keep their distance to the sea animals and respect their space. Hahahaha.

After an hour and a half we had to take a turn to go back to the harbor. The captain was in a moody state and went on full speed into the waves. So we didn't get some water, no, we were soaking wet. It ruined my camera and when I made a comment the answer was that before we left, they told us, we could leave everything at the office. So they were not responsible for the damage and loss of my expensive camera. And I was not the only one, everyone on board put their camera away. And it was a calm day at sea, no waves, no wind, no rain at all! It wasn't necessary we got that wet at all.

When we saw a seaturtle, the captain navigated OVER the turtle, with the respons: he can handle that, he will dive deeper when we sail over it...... And he navigated straight through a whole family of dolphins who were eating fish. Same answer, they will get out of the way. Last year we saw the turtles in Bali who got damaged by boat motors, some shields were almost broken in two. Nasty figure, that captain. After the guide told him what had happened we got a long face, no excuses, nothing.

We went back to the harbor with crying upset small children, two frozen cold children and a few sick. I asked the man who went with us as a guide, if that was the intension of the trip: look around man: sad looking people, soaking wet and crying kids. He was very sorry he said, but that was it. A few days later we went on a boat with Futurismo. And no raincoats, just a fun trip on the boat. We didn't see any whales, but had the afternoon of our life, with a guide who told everything she knew about the sealife and a captain keeping his distance from the eating animals.

if you want to go whalewatching in Ponta Delgada, don't go with Pico Adventures if you're looking for a good time for the whole family.

“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

Swimming with dolphins.
We considered different companies before we booked, but found the location close to our hotel a bonus. The companies that we checked out, didn't have much pricedifference. We went in to book a few days before and felt good about it. On the day we gathered in their offices where we got some information and wetsuits. Not all the wetsuits were perfect fit, but it was actually not a problem. There were two groups going out that morning, in our group there were us four and two others.
When we got close to the dolphins we went in two and two. The last few trips we were all six in at the same time. It was an amazing experience seeing the dolpins coming towards you and hearing all the sounds the dolphins were making. Not once did we feel apprahensive, the two instructors made us feel so safe. We were in the water many times and we saw dolphins virtually every time. In the end, the dolphins were fed up and they dived deep. That was the end of our trip. On the way back to shore, we even saw a shark.
We would recommend this trip to everyone. The instructors were great and made us feel at ease.
