“Perfect fish restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

This restaurant was our absolute favorite here on the island. I've already written a review in German, but after four other visits it's time for an English review. That also gives me the opportunity to comment on some of the other reviews here.
The interieur of the restaurant is pretty modern, you wouldn't expect that when standing before the building. There's enough space between the big tables , so all in all it looks more than a gourmet restaurant. But the overall atmosphere is really relaxed!
I don't know if the restaurant offers other food than fish - we've never read the menue, have always selected our meals from the table with fresh fish! This than will be prepared to perfection by the cook, a former fisherman. You can watch the whole process since the grill is intergrated into the guest room (real show-cooking).
Independent on your selection, you always will receive a huge piece of perfectly prepared fish (if wished, the cook removes the fish bones for you). For some of the fish, e.g. the tuna steak, you have the selection: medium or well done. The side dishes are not too much (potatoes and salad), what is good - otherwise you wouldn't have the chance to eat the whole fish! We've seen other side dishes (vegetables) on one of the other tables, obviously you can order them if wished. The price for the meals varies depending on the type of fish - currently from EUR 10 to EUR 18. That maybe is the reason for some comments here on the bargain. When you - by random - select a meal for just EUR 10 (like we had the first time - each of us got two perfect tuna steaks), you won't beleave the bill (just EUR 36, including a bottle of the best available local white wine). The next day, we had another fish - and payed EUR 54. That no longer sounds like a good bargain - but shows that the difference just comes from the selected fish. So if you want to have a cheap meal, you should check the price of the different fishes - we just selected the best available fish (follow the recommendations!) and were always absolute happy with the selection as well as with the bill. At our last (fifth) visit, we (two people) hat a fish of two kilograms and paid just EUR 24 - together! I gave the higest tip ever and had the feeling that this was not enough…
To your information: The location is wrongly shown on TripAdvisor! I've already reported this, but obviously a change is not trivial. You'll find the restaurant in Ponta Delgada (not, as shown, in Remedios). The Casa Marisca is not far away, from there just go 300 meters to the east (in a small road to the left). In Google Maps, it's correctly located.

“Amazing Fish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

We were so impressed with our meal here that we went again the next night - only sorry we didn't discover it earler. The surrounding area is not great - we walked there and back both times but if you are of a nervous disposition, you may feel more comfortable in a cab. You turn up and head upstairs (the downstairs is a working mens club type bar). After being shown to our table, we were brought a menu (our waiter didn't speak much English but we were easily able to make ourselves understood). We were then lead to the ice box to look at the days catch and pointed to which fish we wanted. We were then asked "bones or no bones" (via a pantomime involving the waiter's arm bones). The chef then gutted and filleted the fish in the cooking area at the end of the restaurant before putting it on the grill. Just incredibly fresh fish with olive oil and seasoning. Nothing else. This was then served with salad and boiled potatoes. The fish was absolutely delicious - honestly the best I have ever eaten by a distance, all the better for being so simple. Also, the Chardonnay from Sao Miguel was excellent (to be honest, the only decent local wine we found all holiday).
Most of the clientele seemed to be local and virtually everyone who came in went over to chat to the chef before sitting down. We ate early but each time, the restaurant got gradually busier as the evening progressed. There was a very friendly atmosphere - helped by a shouted greeting and a huge smile from the moustachioed chef as he ambled in to start work at the beginning of the service.
The whole meal worked out at around 70 Euros for three courses for two of us with water, wine and service. Bargain.

“Pick Fish From Ice Bin and Have it Grilled”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

This great bright and airy Portuguese seafood restaurant in Ponta Delgada sits on a second floor over a bar, but creates a new meaning for the words "fresh fish". You can order either from a menu with pictures of a huge variety of fresh seafood or step to the rear of the restaurant and pick out your own from the fresh caught seafood in the ice bins. The one-man-show of a chef cleans and grills your selection to perfection over an open flame grill. Serve with traditional Portuguese garlic flavored boiled potatoes and salad, the fish is brought on huge platters to be shared family style by those who ordered that catch. Great smoky flavor, but a pricey experience.

“Just fish!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

If you want fish and only fish this is the place to go. The mustached man cooking seems to be a true fisherman. Anything else on the menu is cooked from frozen.
