My husband and I were visiting the Azores for the first time,in the beginning of 2006.As soon as we landed in Ponta Delgada we were amazed over that wonderful nature.I think Paradise has come to Sao Miguel.Even though it was in January, the hills had a bright green colour. When the journey was ordered by the tourist bureau,I had an impression that this could be a pleasant journey, and I was right ! ! We had 14 days on this beautiful island. We had some good excursions on Sao Miguel : Sete Cidades,Furnas,Ribeira Grande,Lago do Fogo,Pineapple-plantation,Gorreana(tea-factory).Along the roadside we saw all the hydrangeas that had finished flowering. And of course we saw the piebald cows. The guide told us,that if we could show a photo of a piebald cow with white ears,he would give a bottle of wine.No one never got that bottle ! We have been treated very nicely by the Azorian population, either you stayed in the hotel, visiting the restaurants or went shopping. My husband and I are not that kind of people who spend hours and hours on the beaches in Southern Europe.I think it´s too boring. So it was the right thing to visit Sao Miguel. We have now been in Denmark 3 months after visiting the island and even now we are longing for the island. Some day we will return again.I won´t hope the Azores will be spoiled by too many tourists.I know it seems selfcontradictory, when I myself am a tourist, but that is my opinion.Look around some places in Southern Europe (I have been there),and you will see what I mean. It´s a shame. So Sao Miguel,be yourself ! At last I hope I get the opportunity to visit the other 8 islands in the Azores and see how they differ from each other.

Sao Miguel is one of the most beautiful places to visit. From it's main city of Ponta Delgado to it's tiny villages there's something for everyone. Having been lucky to be of azorean descent, I have been fortunate to visit the place where my parents were born numerous times. If you want to experience something that will remind you a bit of home why not try one of the clubs in Ponta Delgado where the fun doesn't end until the last person goes home. If you are looking for some peace and quiet try Vila do Nordeste, a beautiful village located about an hours drive. Visit the Miradoras located all over the island, they are picnic areas where you can be mesmerized by the Island's natural beauty. Visit Lagoa do Fogo or Furnas. There are travel agencies that operate all sorts of tours located right in Ponta Delgado. From the moment you step off the Plane until it's time to go home, this is one experience you will never forget. In the summer you'll be able to experience a Portuguese Feast. They have them every weekend. Enjoy!

As always it was unbielievable, europes best kept secret does not dissapoint. I have been going back and forth the last 25 years, this year marked the 25th anniversary of meeting my wife for the very first time, we were children of 16 and 18 years old. I have loved this island paradise from the very first time I went there in 78 and always will till the day I die. It has it all mountains, hot springs known as caldeiras, mountain spring water, cobble stone streets and hospitality galore we stayed in her home town of FURNAS where they have all of these things tunnels thru mountains, flowers with unbeilievable beauty, the food as always tremendouse, there is so much to do there yet if you want peace and quiet you can find it there on the sea shore of RIBEIRA QUENTE overlooking the atlantic ocean on a moon lit night nothing in this world could be more beautiful and humbling at the same time. In closing I would like to say that when I think of all the hustle and bustle that we go thru every day here and i think of how simple life is in Sao Miguel i feel a great sense of urgency to go back and visit so i can regroup and prioritize gods green earth ................If you have a chance to go to the Azores I strongly recomend it but don't tell too many people about it lets not spoil for generations to come.......
