“Amazing stay at glorious Qunita do Mar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Stayed at Quinta do Mar 8/2-8/12/2013, it was amazing. Chris, Nick and Gilda make this a perfect location for visiting the island of Sao Miguel. Beautiful location with views of the ocean all around - from your room, from breakfast on the terrace, from the beautiful pool or from any of the roof top areas. Chris and Gilda serve a wonderful breakfast, something different every day, eggs, fruit, pastries, fresh orange juice, amazing coffee, a great start to each day, looking at the ocean and having someone serve you a full meal with attention to detail. We spent our time touring the island and enjoying the local food, Chris was helpful with directions to the beach and restaurant choices. We enjoyed amazing meals at Bar Caloura, Restaurante Atlantico in Vila Franca do Campo, Restaurante Tony's in Furnas, A Traineira Restaurante e Cervejaria in Lagoa, O Corisco in Ponta del Gada and Rotas in Ponta del Gada. Nick helped us book our rental car and gave perfect directions from the airport to Quinta do Mar, it is only about a 20-25 minute drive with the new fast road. My husband was born on Sao Miguel and he enjoyed speaking Portuguese with Gilda and learning about village life today, he was nine when he immigrated to the Boston area. We ate at the Bar Caloura down the road 3-4 times during our visit, the fish was amazing, a great local spot and very affordable and a nice place to go hang out after a day of touring. As others have said, this is a very special place that will live on in our memories long after our departure, we plan to return soon, can't think of any other place I would rather go to relax, enjoy wine, local food and the beautiful scenery and welcoming people of the Azores. We are so grateful to Nick, Chris and Gilda for creating this amazing place to stay on my husband's home island and we can't wait to return. Thanks you so much for the beautiful memories of Sao Miguel and Qunita do Mar, very hard to adjust back to our life in the suburbs of Boston. Kind regards to all, Terry, Lee and Olivia

We stayed for 3 nights in early August 2013. The perfect location for a relaxing few days.
Super location, fabulous breakfast, splendid scenery, and awesome evening aura listening to the unusual call of the cory sheerwater. (wonderful). The warm welcome, unparalleled attention to detail with regards to accommodation arrangements, and sustenance, shown by Nick, Chris, ably aided by Gilda was very much appreciated. We would challenge anyone to find a more desirable place to spend a few days. Marvellous.

If you are reading this you are looking for a good hotel on Sao Miguel. There really is no point in looking any further - you have found it. The welcome from Nick, Chris and Gilda is warm and genuine and the standard of accommodation is second to none. Chris's breakfasts (different every day) are about the best I have ever had, anywhere. Do not miss out on the weekly dinner option either!
Lovely pool with more sunbeds than guests (something of a novelty in my experience) and a very reasonably priced honesty bar on the delightful terrace offers a very pleasant eveining "at home" if you want it. .
The fish restaurant a few minutes walk away at the harbour in Coloura (sp?) is the best place to eat with the freshest fish around and more friendly faces.
All in all a very enjoyable week's stay.
Would still love to get that shearwater ring tone Nick!

Thank you Nick, Chris, Gilda and Porto for making our third visit to the island, and to Quinta Do Mar, as wonderful and relaxing as ever. The hospitality was excellent with five star breakfasts and luxurious accommodation ; we loved the pizza evening and festival in the village . It was a lovely surprise to find that a fish restaurant has now opened down by sea. This is a very unique and special place that lives on in our memory long after we have returned home. On our next visit we plan to take in some of the other islands in the archipelago, with a stop over at QDM of course!

Quinta do Mar lived up to every expectation that we read about and more. Nick, Chris and Gilda are a great team and made us feel very welcome. They are charming and great fun and could not have done more for us. This beautiful boutique hotel nestles in superb surroundings with sea views, the swimming pool was warm and clean and Chris' breakfasts on the patio each morning were second to none. So much to eat one really didnt need lunch! The gardens are well kept, the bedrooms large, airy and clean. The atmosphere is relaxed and personal. The honesty bar is an excellent idea and lovely to come back for a night cap after a meal out to sit and listen to the beautiful cacophony of the Cory Shearwaters returning to their nests having spent the day out at sea. A real treat!

A car is definitely a requirement and Nick is happy to book any trips you want.

Many many thanks Nick Chris and Gilda for your wonderful hospitality, laughs and conversations - we had just the best holiday exploring Sao Miguel and it all started with you guys. Sarah and Dave Anderson

My wife and I had had the pleasure of 5 nights at this lovely boutique guest house in July 2013.

The setting is superb, the rooms are large, spotlessly clean and very well furnished. The beds are very large , comfy and come with quality linen provided which in my book usually makes for a great nights kip !

The layout of the place is very well designed with a guest pavilion for breakfasts away from the main building with lovely gardens , a small swimming pool and sun terrace alongside.

Chris and Gilda produced the most superb breakfasts throughout our stay and nothing was too much trouble. The honesty bar is a great idea and well stocked for a 'night cap' if you have been out in the evening.

Our only regret was not being there on a Friday when we believe an evening dinner is an option.

Caloura is a great location from which to explore Sao Miguel - but ensure you arrange car hire.

Chris , Nick and Gilda - many thanks for your hospitality and for making us feel very welcome. Good luck with the plans to expand the property,

We plan to return in the near future when we will also take in some of the other islands.

Room Tip: Only 4 rooms and all of an excellent standard - book early !

Can't help but unwind at this lovely hotel. Nick and Chris were great hosts and Gilda very attentive. Rooms are spacious with very comfortable and large bed. Fab breakfasts with the best fruit plate to start and free range eggs done all ways! Honesty bar to help yourself to drinks when you want. With only four rooms, the vibe is relaxed, friendly and personal. We stayed for a week and it was a perfect start to a fabulous Azorian holiday. Thank you!
