“An Enchanted Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2011

we stayed in the Convent for 1 week from 28th May 2011. It is enchanting. We had a lovely room with a log fire. The bed linen was changed alternate days and the towels where changed everyday. The service was excellent. The couple who own it go out of their way to make the stay as pleasant as possible. Feel free to roam around the convent. The hotel was lovely and clean and the breakfast was good. Freshly squeezed oranges every day! The hotel was lovely and quiet and had plenty of areas to sit and read or lounges to be sociable. Ideal for couples.

A really unique place, when we first arrived we were worried as the outside looks really uninspiring but the conversion inside is really lovely. Our honeymoon room was lovely and the breakfasts were great- with freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh local pineapples every morning.

I recently stayed in this hotel because the building sounded fascinating to me. I was more than pleased with the building and the location but there were some down points. All other guests were on a yoga week and they were occupying all the common areas and sitting around making noise until late at night. This was really irritating considering how much we had paid for this room (why do hotels in the Azores charge so much???) and we were unable to use many of the common areas due to the large group present.

The breakfast was probably the best we had in the Azores but there were mice running around the kitchen and the bread/jams are left out for the guests before they arrive. So make sure you don't take anything that has already been nibbled.

The location of this hotel is spectacular with fantastic views. There is a swimming pool but it was cold in September. I did venture in but couldn't stay too long.

The bedroom was lovely and so was the bathroom.

If you do plan on staying, try to find out from the owners if there is a group booked in at the same time as I certainly found that it reduced my appreciation of such a serene location.

  • Liked — The building and the location
  • Disliked — The mice and the large group (nothing personal, just wasn't what I expected to find there)

This is a unique property in an old convent. The building is beautiful & overlooks the ocean & has stunning views. The pool is large & nice.

The property is well-kept and very clean, but also very spartan & there are NO frills (ie no shampoos, etc.). The beds are not very comfortable, and the breakfast is average - the same cheese everyday & breads. The owner is very nice, but not very helpful, and if you need guidance on where to go, where to eat, what to do, etc., this is not the place to go. We often had trouble finding her & her husband & it often felt like there was no one there. They also gave us incorrect directions a bunch of times.

At night the sounds in the hall echo into the rooms. Villa Franco do Campo is a beautiful village - the best restaurant there is La Estrella or the one in the new Marina.

Overall, a unique property, but not sure I'd stay there again.

  • Liked — Ocean View & unique property
  • Disliked — poor service, spartan rooms
