“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2009

We travelled to Calour Hotel with Holiday Options who I would thoroughly recommend as their rep Jorge is excellent. He provided info on trips, car hire, public transport and restaurants.
We loved the Caloura Hotel. The situation for us was perfect. The rooms were of a nice proportion and very clean with every balcony having a superb view. Personally I thought that the rooms on the second floor had the best views. All staff were very helpful and we thought the resturant and food were lovely. Although sometimes the food was plain it tasted beautiful and the bread buns and eggs were some of the best we have ever tasted.
The hotel is lovely and quiet and this seemed to be what most people were looking for. To just sit out on the balcony on an evening with no noises of cars or loud music was great.
Although some say car hire is essential and to be honest most people do hire a car, we found it no trouble getting around by walking and on public bus which we enjoyed as it enabled us to relax and enjoy the journeys rather than concentrating on driving and where to park.
Caloura itself is very pretty and there is a nice walk through the hotel gardens to the rocks, there is also a short walk to the beach.
If you need a supermarket you need to go to Agua de Pau approx 20 minute walk uphill. Agua de Pau itself although larger than we thought it would be, was quite nice and the view from the mirador is well worth the walk.
If you like beautiful scenery and quality accomadation IMO Caloura Hotel provides this. We had a perfect holiday there

We stayed for seven nights in March 2009 as part of a package with Sunvil holidays.
The hotel is on the south coast mid way between the west and east of the island. The location is isolated so car rental is essential.
All the rooms have a sea view and a balcony. The room we had was spacious and spotlessly clean.
Breakfasts were excellent. The only slight criticism is of the evening buffet which was uninspiring. Quite of few of the guests preferred to use the Restaurant Milenio in the local town of Agua de Pau.
Be advised that Sao Miguel is not a beach destination. It is a wonderful island for sightseeing and walking. Although we saw plenty of flowers, it might have been better to wait until late April or early May to see them at their best.

We stayed here in September 2006. The room was a good size, clean and the views were stunning. The breakfast is excellent and there is a good selection for dinner. We did not book half board but ended up eating there every night as we didn't enjoy driving the windy roads at night and after eating out at lunchtime it was nice to just relax in the hotel.
You definitely need to hire a car if you stay here as it is out of the way.

We stayed at the Caloura Hotel for a couple of days and absolutely loved it. We had a hire car, which I would recommend as you will want to travel from here. We took our 2 children aged 13 and 18 and were given a family room with a kingsize bed and double sofa-bed in a separate connecting room. We had fabulous views over the sea and swimming pool, and as the kids wanted to go whale watching, we spent alot of time with binoculars watching the sea for dolphins and whales which we were told were most active in the early morning. The hotel has its own access to an inlet with rock-pools. The kids loved exploring this with us. The weather was so good that we spent most of our time there outside either on the balconies (we had 2), or at the bar/cafe overlooking the sea, or by the pool, or exploring the gardens and coast. The hotel is modern and the staff were very hospitable. We later went to a hotel in Ponta Delgada (The Royal Park) which was good too, but not so memorable. If you want to see the island, the Caloura is a good place to see the Eastern side from, then stay in Ponta Delgada to see the Western side. The hotel laid on an evening to explain whale watching trips, which was worth going to even if you don't book, as it was fascinating and explained about the local sea life including birds, dolphins and whales. A perfect place to stay for what turned out to be a perfect holiday on a perfect island.

  • Liked — The view of the sea and pool from our balcony
  • Disliked — The main restaurant menu could have had more selection.

Good hotel and having toured island, pleased with choice. Alternative was Terre Nostra Hotel but this was better. Friendly staff good check-in having arrived early. Clean modern and functional hotel - German / Scandinavian standard reflected in guests from Germany, Neths & Finland. Good pool (not heated but not needed). All rooms with balconies overlooking sea. Fantastic sunsets - different every evening. Very quiet location and half board a necessity for many. Food local - high standard and good choice. Minus side - beds were extremely hard and if you need something soft

Wifi and internet access via reception. Room safes in bedrooms rented from reception.

Had a big problem finding the hotel because of local roadworks but should be finished soon!

Would recommend the hotel for a quiet getaway and base for exploring the island.

We stayed in the Caloura Hotel with a 13 month old baby. The hotel is great and the rooms are good. The pool was clean and was reasonable quiet.
The hotel is quite a bit away from Caloura and Agua de Pao. It are nice walks, but wouldn't recommend that for a buggy/pram. It is quite cheap to take a taxi into Ponta Delgada.
Food was okay although we did more use the a la carte service in the afternoon than the buffet in the evening. Breakfast is plain, but good enough.
I myself like fishing, which was the only down side on the holidays as I think it is quite overrated. I went on a boat trip and we caught a few fish on heavy tackle, so it was not really enjoyable and quite expensive. The harbour in Caloura was under renovation/new construction, so it was not possible to fish there. From the rocks fishing was very difficult or you need to be a mountain goat. Still nice views and clear water which made things enjoyable.
I would sure recommend the hotel and the resort. I would recommend car hire as some of the nice sites are far away.

We used Holiday Options for this holiday to The Azores, flying from Gatwick by SATA International, the Azorean airline's Airbus. Previously, the Airbus had collected passengers from Manchester, so on the way back, we had to drop them off, adding an hour or so to the return trip. Even so, the plane was only 3/4 full.
On arrival at Ponta Delgarda airport, we were met by Holiday Options rep Jorge, who soon had us aboard the transfer bus. The bus did however drop off passengers to a few hotels in the capital, Ponta Delgarda, before heading east to our resort. This made for a late, or early arrival, whichever way you look at it, 3am!
We were greeted at the reception and soon in our room, which was of a reasonable size, with en-suite.
We managed to rouse ourselves in time for breakfast, which, was a buffet, as was the evening meal, unless you took the optional a la carte option. The restaurant offered panoramic views over the small bay, surrounded by towering cliffs, the colours of which gave away the volcanic origins of the group of islands. The staff all spoke excellent English and were friendly and helpful at all times.
The Caloura Hotel Resort was positioned on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic to one side and the small bay to the side. In front of the hotel was a swimming pool, with an adequate number or loungers and sun shades for the users.
From the pool, you could take a walk down a narrow path the the top of the cliffs, passing cactus, and many colourful wild plants. In theory, it was possible to bathe in a natural swimming pool, created by a tidal pool, though, reaching it down the rocks looked rather hazardous to this traveller of advancing years!
A small beach was accessible after leaving the hotel grounds and walking down the hill and a steps. It was signed as being a naturist beach, but the few users when we visited were wearing normal beachware.
We went on the "bon apetite" basis, which meant that we could eat from the evening buffet at no extra cost for 3 days and the remaining 4 days could be spent eating out, or paying to eat in the hotel. We opted to eat in and I found the buffet to be good, though my wife said it was a little boring. So take your pick!
Hire cars are quite expensive, but well worth the cost, to explore the island, which we discovered was still volcanically active, in the form of steaming springs, bubbling mud pools and swimming pools heated by natural hot water. The island also had thermal power generation.
For a restful unspoilt holiday, go to The Azores. It won't stay like it for long!
