I was quite disappointed as I chose to stay at Caloura based on the review on this hotel which seem in retrospect, largely inaccurate. Perhaps everyone else in the Trip Advisor community is low maintenance but I expect certain things from a "four star" hotel, which are fairly standard in the world (I have traveled to Europe and generally have seen these things in even two or three star hotels). Here is an executive summary of the pros and cons of staying here at this resort.
Decent free breakfast included
Good heating system in room
Wifi is free
Horrible service - the front desk kept giving us key cards that wouldn't work for the room and when I went back to the desk for the third time after it didn't work, they didn't apologize or anything. This happened for three consecutive days. They also barely speak english. The one guy with the glasses does but none of the other ones coherently did.
The room is lacking. It's not small, it's probably smaller than average than most Paris, Rome, London hotels I've stayed at - I've never been to Lisbon but the size is acceptable. However it lacks really basic items such as kleenex, small amenities such as conditioner, shampoo, body cream, electrical plug in bathroom (good luck finding an extra one, its under the desk, lol), safe (you have to pay for it, come on son), they only give you two bath towels (that are very small and barely cover my body- I'm 5'5' 120 pounds so good luck if you are bigger than me), clock, the garbage can is the size of a small mcdonalds cup, the list goes on...
Bed is awful - its a foam mattress from the 80's and the pillow they give you is too low. I would recommend taking the pillow from the closet as it is higher. Yes, seconding the other reviewers, the decor is from the 80's but really who cares when you have to unplug every single light fixture so you can charge your electronics?
The best part of the stay is the view - I am a yogi so I enjoyed bringing my yoga mat and doing yoga on the balcony overlooking the view.
The restaurant is not very good, I would recommend driving down the shore and going to Bar Caloura, where they have a fish special for 12 euros everyday. They speak very good English and the food is excellent.
You must rent a car if you want to stay at this resort as it is quite remote and we chose it because it was quiet and we were going to drive everywhere anyway to hike.
