“Little annoyances overshadow excellent view”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

I was quite disappointed as I chose to stay at Caloura based on the review on this hotel which seem in retrospect, largely inaccurate. Perhaps everyone else in the Trip Advisor community is low maintenance but I expect certain things from a "four star" hotel, which are fairly standard in the world (I have traveled to Europe and generally have seen these things in even two or three star hotels). Here is an executive summary of the pros and cons of staying here at this resort.
Pros

Great view
Decent free breakfast included
Good heating system in room
Wifi is free

Cons
Horrible service - the front desk kept giving us key cards that wouldn't work for the room and when I went back to the desk for the third time after it didn't work, they didn't apologize or anything. This happened for three consecutive days. They also barely speak english. The one guy with the glasses does but none of the other ones coherently did.

The room is lacking. It's not small, it's probably smaller than average than most Paris, Rome, London hotels I've stayed at - I've never been to Lisbon but the size is acceptable. However it lacks really basic items such as kleenex, small amenities such as conditioner, shampoo, body cream, electrical plug in bathroom (good luck finding an extra one, its under the desk, lol), safe (you have to pay for it, come on son), they only give you two bath towels (that are very small and barely cover my body- I'm 5'5' 120 pounds so good luck if you are bigger than me), clock, the garbage can is the size of a small mcdonalds cup, the list goes on...

Bed is awful - its a foam mattress from the 80's and the pillow they give you is too low. I would recommend taking the pillow from the closet as it is higher. Yes, seconding the other reviewers, the decor is from the 80's but really who cares when you have to unplug every single light fixture so you can charge your electronics?

The best part of the stay is the view - I am a yogi so I enjoyed bringing my yoga mat and doing yoga on the balcony overlooking the view.

The restaurant is not very good, I would recommend driving down the shore and going to Bar Caloura, where they have a fish special for 12 euros everyday. They speak very good English and the food is excellent.

You must rent a car if you want to stay at this resort as it is quite remote and we chose it because it was quiet and we were going to drive everywhere anyway to hike.

The hotel is fresh and very clean. Rooms have a great view over the ocean, and some rooms even overlook the nearby quiet beach. The food in the restaurant might not be the most exiting, but it is more than ok. Breakfast has everything you'd like; eggs, bread, cereals etc. Be sure to taste the croissant - Yummy!

The pool area and the pool is very clean, and there is a snackbar for lunch and drinks.

Important nowadays: Very good wifi ;-).

My Mom and I spent a week here and loved it. The staff is very friendly and helpful but not intrusive. The hotel is lovely and views incredible - every room and the dining room are all ocean-facing and beautiful. The rooms are simple but clean, bright and have great balconies. The location isn't near the bigger towns but it's easy to get anywhere from here by car or taxi. The restaurant and food were awesome! I tried every seafood dish with no disappointments. Breakfast is included and offers a huge spread of fresh local options. The decks and pool area are big and overlook the ocean. Wonderful stay all around.

There is nothing negative that I could say about my stay at the Caloura Hotel. The room itself was a little dated but very clean and roomy. What makes this hotel sensational is the amazing views and location. We stayed in room 213 which faced the beautiful landscaping and ocean - breathtaking!! There is a lovely walkway from the hotel to the ocean which also has beautiful views. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel. Be sure to check out Caloura Bar restaurant for great fresh fish and a lovely ocean setting. It's a five minute drive down the road. You won't be dissapointed.

We spent 8 nights on Sao Miguel. The first four in Furnas, last four here. The vistas from the hotel room and the bar areas are truly first class. You're also adjacent to a nice beach within walking distance. Everything in our room area was functional. The included breakfast was more than adequate as well (although a bit crowded at times). Housekeeping was scary thorough. Our room appeared pristine upon every return.

Now the not so great:
Hotel staff was nice, but by no means friendly. I'd classify as 'aloof'. Reception didn't greet us. Gave them our name, asked for our passports to make copies, told us our room number...that was it. On checkout, no "how was your stay", "thanks", nothing. Just "these are the additional charges on your room, do they look correct?"

The room was a little dated as well. The carpet was excessively worn.

Also, when paying ~$200/night for a hotel room, I'm not a big fan of having to pay extra for wireless, sauna time, tennis courts, etc... This stuff should be included. Don't charge guests fees of <$5 to use something when they're dropping that kind of cash to stay with you in the first place.

This hotel is beautiful, the location on the cliffs is spectacular. Clean and comfortabel room, really nice to sit on the balcony. Great big pool but 3,5m deep so not safe for children. There is a restaurant with buffet. Until 7h pm you can order pastas, salads, burgers and more at the bar near the pool. In the evening the bar at the first floor is open an from 10pm untill midnight the wifi is free. For us this was the best hotel from the 4 hotels we slept in at the Azores.

We loved this hotel. The views are absolutely wonderful. We had an excellent triple room with great sea view with a large balcony on the ground floor with easy access to the main areas. The pool is a very good size, was never overcrowded when we were there and again has brilliant views over the ocean. As previous reviewers have said guests were mainly German and Dutch but all staff and many of the guests speak English. We particularly liked the bar on the third floor. This is a very comfortable area, again with stunning views and lovely bar staff - the lady who served us last week was wonderful. We walked to the old fishing port (about 20 - 25 minutes walk) to an excellent fish restaurant - Bar Caloura when we wanted a change from the hotel buffet which was fine. We stayed here for 3 nights which was about right, as we had not hired a car. We had previously stayed 4 nights in Ponta Delgada and this we thought was a perfect combination. If any longer, you would need a car. It is remote, but for us this added to the appeal. The location is absolutely stunning and you have views from all parts of the hotel.
