Our first hotel on our Azores holiday. Absolutely fabulous garden for anyone who likes gardening. The thermally heated pool was unusual and much appreciated, but bring old swimming costumes - it turns them yellow!. However gardens and pool have constant streams of coach parties during the day, so hotel guests are better enjoying them outside these hours. The walking around Furnas is excellent and the caldeiras (hot springs) fascinating, so there is plenty to do.
The restaurant is of a good standard for this class of hotel with a decent list of Portuguese wines. Breakfast is a bit weak, we thought. We hoped for lots of fruit - fruit salad was available. Orange juice is not a strong point.
Bedrooms were simple but OK, extremely clean. Some face directly onto the street, which isn't very noisy, but ask for a garden view. The Art Deco style is for connoisseurs - you could imagine Hercule Poirot here.
Young people are well catered for with a pool table and a games room. Local bars are close and the hotel bar has a fine selection of drinks, and daytime snacks, with good service.
Anyone staying here needs to be aware of the weather - sun and rain in rapid succession , due to the situation. Don't expect to lie on a sunlounger. Expensive hairdos beware!
It takes 60-90mins to the airport, so remember this if you have an early flight out.
