“The ONLY place to stay on Pico!! We love it!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2011

This was our 5th year in a row to stay at Whale'come ao Pico. It is the only place to base yourself when staying on Pico island. We always find it to be clean, comfortable and excellent value. The staff are so kind and friendly and are always happy to help you. The rooms are big enough for what you will need. The food choice is excellent compared to anywhere else on the island. I am vegetarian and very fussy at that. There is always something for me to choose and they will adapt meals if I ask. We would also recommend that during your stay there you book a whale watching trip with the company next door 'Espaco Talassa', you won't regret it. We're bringing our friends to Pico next year and we will be staying with Whale'come ao Pico, guaranteed!!

Room Tip: It is worth booking a room with a sea view, you should be able to see Pico mountain when yopu wake u...

Small, simple, but clean, modern, and nicely furnished. Unbeatable value for the money. Believe me, I looked extensively for all options. Your milage may very if you go during more touristy seasons. Off-peak it was unbeatable.

Whale'come ao Pico is situated in a series of old fisherman's cottages right on the waterfront in Lajes. The rooms are small but charmingly converted and provided all that we needed for a very comfortable three nights stay. It is associated with the Espaco Talassa whale watching centre next door and you can often chat with the crews over breakfast or in the bar, so it is the ideal place for seeing whales in the Azores. It is also close to the Lages whaling museum. There is a small bistro on the premesis in the evenings or there are restaurents within easy walking distance in the town. We are already planning a return trip!

We had booked 3 nights here through a travel company, having never been before.

We arrived at night after a bit of a long trip (airport delays) so didn't see very much of the location till the morning.

Basically the village is empty out of season, almost nowhere to eat, the hotel doesn't do evening meals out of season. No taxis, without a car you can't get anywhere, the museum is open but limited hours and that it pretty much it.

Have to say the hotel was clean, presentable if a bit minimalist, no proper heating which in October becomes an issue.

I'd recommend the hotel and location for a short stay (2 days max) in season...but no other time.

Yes, you are right, Lajes is a small village still far aways from the Azorean touristic spots . it is our charm and most of our client look for it. If you are looking for a busy and animate place better not to visit us.
It is exagerate to say that the village is empty, (touristicly may be ), people are living here: school, facilities and stores are open...well, normal life go on.
True, It is better to rent a car.
Wrong we have heater for who ask for it (also the temp is around 18/20 º in October), wrong again when you say 2 days maxi in Lajes, for travelers who want to appreciate our culture, the whale watching, the beuatiful trails of the mountain..., I think that 5 or 6 days are a minimum.,

We stayed in Whale'come ao Pico for two nights, having secured a booking, for this very busy season, through a friendly internet correspondence. In Enslish, but a have no idea why the previous French speaking reviewer felt so lost. The owner is French, and many of the staff speak French too.
The room, we had the biggist, was simple but spotless, with excellent beds and a super clean shower. The reception was friendly ( in the shop), and efficient. We can latish in the afternoon, and they immediately advised us to reserve a dinner, as there were still two boats out on the sea. The restaurant would be full after they had come back. That restaurant is friendly, excellent foo, good choicem good wines inclduing good wine advice. Nices seats outside on a wide open corner. Good spot! And Pico is great for its white wines, and there is even some Pinot Noir now.
We had booking a Whale view trip for our last morning, but the owner saw us at breakfast the first morning and advised us to go then and not a day later. because of the weather. And he was right: it rained the next night, and the morning after there was a storm. Unfortunately, we could not climb Pico, but you cannot do two things at once. The whale-view trip was super, and we saw about 20 whales, inluding some jumping. Many tails etc. Only a few dolphins, but that fact was off-set by the jumping whales. Safety and equipment looked new and good, and discipline on board (a hard bottom Zodiac with seats for 12 people) was strict. Plus there is a solid instruction and info hour before you go. There of course, when you are the only French amongst a group of English speakers, you are out of luck. That is globalisation, I suppose.
This Hotel plus amenities gets our thumbs up!

We visited Whale' come ao Pico for the second time in the summer 2008. This time with our 3 children (age 22, 20, 19).
It was the greatest holiday we ever offered them. Relaxed hotel, excellent price/quality for the rooms and the food and rooms with a view, Pico Mountain is beautyfull at any time of the day. Great crew with a lot of experience and they 'walk their talk', ecology first ! We enjoyed every moment of our seatrips and feel grateful for the gifts of nature and the efforts of the crew.

  • Liked — crew, hotel, environment, ecology policy, familiar approach
  • Disliked — nothing
