My wife and I spent three nights at Pousada de Santa Cruz, June 18-20 ,2008 at the beginning of an 11 day Azores trip. The hotel is built within the walls of a 450 year old fortress and is right on the waterfront and marina where sailors from around the world pull into port. Many languages could be heard on the piers of the marina.Although the room was a bit smaller than we usually like it did have a balcony looking down on the pool and across the channel to the neighboring island of Pico, where, if it were not cloudy, you could see Pico Mt., 7700 feet high. The room and the hotel were very clean and well maintained. The pool was clean but hardly used by the guests.Breakfast was included and was certainly adequate and quite good and included sparkling wine for mimosas. We never had dinner in the hotel so I cannot comment on that. The one problem we had was that the room safe did not work and was not repaired during our stay even though we were told it would be.Being located right on the harbor made it a bit noisy at times.Besides being a marina it is also a working port with large ships offloading goods. One night that happened well into the early morning hours.A real plus is that the hotel is centrally located and you can easily walk to almost anyplace in town. The staff were professional, courteous and friendly.and other than the safe they did things efficiently and quickly.
