“Spectacular view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

The hotel is perched out on a bluff opposite the Sagres fortress bluff, with an expansive sheltered beach below. In the distance to the west one can see the Saint Vincent bluff, the farthermost point to the west on the European continent ... a great setting for sunsets. The hotel is more costly than most pousadas, but lacks any historical pedigree. It is a somewhat dated modern structure, luxurious, but without much distinctive character. The amenities include an outdoor pool, and the usual fine restaurant.

Incredible setting on a cliff in Sagres. Staff was great. Restaurant was very good for dinner and breakfast. Nice pool but it was too windy to swim. The view is incredible!!! Nice balcony off our room.

I would go back here in a flash, no question. We went for a Long weekend...well just because it was there. Some reviews have said the posada is tired but for me the slight need for refreshment just added to the character. The staff were so nice...as all Portuguese are in my view - helpful and caring with no language barrier hang ups. Just get a room with a sea view - help yourself to the fruit and drinks provided in the room, sit on the balcony and all your cares will be gone in an instant. Breakfast was excellent, the bed was comfortable, and Sagres has so much history. This posada gets a 5 in my book. Yes they do need to do a bit of refurbishment but it is obvious that it s an ongoing project so no complaints.

Room Tip: Sea view essential

We had an amazing room that overlooked the beach. Definitely get second floor rooms 201 to 212. Extra for seaside but well worth the extra money. They had a questionnaire asking you to name the best employee but honestly they were all so fabulous it was hard to single it down to one person, enjoyed our lunches on the balcony with a bottle of wine and bread, cheese and salamis which we had purchased at the supermarket. It was so nice to breathe in the nice clean air.

Room Tip: As per above go 2nd floor rooms 201-212

I've done a whole bunch of Tripadvisor reviews over the years and this is one of the hardest ever because I really want to rate this place higher. I'd go back in a heartbeat and I waffled between a 3 and 4 but, after thinking about it for a week, it's a three. My wife and I just spent two weeks in Portugal at five different places (including two other pousadas) and Pousada de Sagres just doesn't measure up for the reasons below.

First of all, what we loved. The view is beyond belief, really one of the most stunning places we've ever stayed. You really feel you are looking out on the end of the known world. Even better was the staff. They were so personable and willing to help and give advice. Breakfasts (the same, with minor changes, in every pousada) were fresh and very extensive. Eggs, breads, rolls, many different fresh fruits, meats, cheeses, and on and on. No need for lunch after a breakfast like that. The balcony and balcony furniture made it our favorite spot. The bed was just fine with a lovely, light comforter, and first rate linens throughout.

So, what makes it a three star? A whole bunch of stuff that could be (and should be, at a pousada) remedied quickly and, in most cases, pretty easily. Like chipped paint. I could have touched them up in five minutes - max - but there probably were 15 chipped paint areas in our room and hallway. The bedroom furniture (desk, closet) was old and, frankly, reminded me a of 1960s-era college dorm room. Not at all first-quality stuff. The mini-fridge was a joke. The safe didn't work. We let the staff know that the first day. On the last day, the safe still didn't work. The lighting fixtures were old, pretty ugly, and gave off about as much light as three candles on each side of the bed. Others in the room were no better. Outside, the wall beyond the swimming pool is cracked, stained and in need of paint.

I would guess that this pousada is an ongoing project. The door/window to the balcony was very new and a perfect seal to noise. As stated above, the bed, mattress, pillows and linens were all top quality. I would guess the owners are working on the place, little by little, and I understand that. What I don't understand are things like chipped paint and a worthless mini-fridge.

My wife and I really do hope to go back. The Sagres area - particularly the beaches north of Cape St. Vincent - is great. I hope they've touched up the paint by then.

Room Tip: Only worth staying at if you have an ocean view room.

I am still revisiting the beautiful views in my mind. Portugal natives are such friendly people, and staying at a Pousada was an experience I am glad I didn't miss. The rooms are not "flashy", but comfortable and clean. We visited off season. However, no crowds are always fine with me! (Some local fish were not in season....something to think about.) To watch a storm come in across the ocean, only to bring sunshine/rainbows afterwards in a matter of hours brought moments of reflection and relaxation for me. The am buffet was plentiful and fresh. We ate dinner here one night, and it was just above average. Service was exceptional. The staff wanted us to be happy. We rec'd comp. fruits and champagne. We had heard from other travelers who belong to the Pousada club, that other Pousadas are even better than this particular one. Price here was approx. 100 euros/night. Don't miss king prawns with cognac @ Ristorante Carlos, just down the street. And....I mean that !! Yum-Yum

The view alone is an amazing reason to book a night at the Pousada de Sagres. The views of the cape are breathtaking. Add to that friendly, helpful hotel staff and an amazing dining experience, and you get an all around spectacular retreat.

We toured Portugal for our honeymoon and the staff provided us with a complementary assortment of delicious chocolates and a bottle of champagne, which we enjoyed on our balcony overlooking the bay at sunset.

Afterward we had dinner in the hotel's restaurant and were not disappointed. For our meal, we selected a catalplana (copper cooking dish) filled with local Algarvian seafood, which our server dished out to us at the table. She also suggested a delicious bottle of vinho verde wine which complemented the meal perfectly. All of the waitstaff were prompt, courteous, and extremely attentive, not to mention very nice.

The decor of the restaurant isn't spectacular and the dinner service could use some local music and a dimming of the lights (very bright!) but again the views and the food made us forget any issues.

We highly recommend the Pousada!

Room Tip: You must get an ocean view!
