“Windy oasis away from the crowds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

Martinhal is quite different than any other resort in the Algarve. For one,it does not sit on a golf course. It also in not located near a town with pubs and restaurants catering to tourists. There are no extensive green, manicured lawns and big hotels. Martinhal is different, special and really not for everyone. The resort is designed in a way that respects the environment-with low built structures that better compliment its cliff side position. The best accommodation, the Ocean Houses, have beautiful view of the unspoilt coastline. On a windy day (more often in July and early August but then tapering off) you can see the windsurfers and kite surfers speeding through the crystal water. The beach is relatively empty and though the water can be cold, the fact that there are so few people make it well worth it.
The facilities in the resort improve every year we have gone to Martinhal (we have been guests since its opening) and it is really the perfect place for families with young children. There are plenty of things for them to do at the kids club but also just watching them run around the central square by the new 'surf bar' and restaurant usually keeps everyone happy. For older kids there are surf lessons or as we have all done, windsurfing lessons.
Food is good and service can be inconsistent but the staff does try hard and is all rather young and energetic (also something unusual for the Algarve). You can also cook meals in your houses, get prepared meals at the on site market or dine on or off the property. There is a local supermarket about 2km from Martinhal called Intermarche which has a nice choice of food and wine.
The Luxury Villas do vary in luxury so best to ask lots of questions when booking. Villas have private owners that rent the property to the resort so decor, layout and standards seem to be quite different.
The nearest town of Sagres is charming. Unsophisticated, laid back and full of young people (surfers) in camper vans is the scene. But there are some very good restaurants, fun bars and the vibe makes it all feel rather hip and cool in an understated way.
If you are looking for a non-resort 'resort' than Martinhal is the place to go.

We stayed for 10 days in October in the Vilas Mimosa as we wanted the flexibility of self-catering facilities.

This is the first time we went to a resort of any type. As independent travellers, now with 2 children aged 10 months and 3 years, we booked the place with some trepidation.

I have nothing bad, however, to say about Martinhal. It is well organised, the staff are very friendly, the facilities good, the activities and amenities for kids are well thought-out, and the service excellent. The kids loved it, and the “distractions” available for the children at the restaurants – a play area with supervision – was a welcome respite for us from the rigours of building sand castles or teaching the kids how to swim in one of the four pools. I was particularly impressed with these staff whose job it is to work directly with the kids and in the crèche or the children’s clubs.

I would hesitate to recommend this place to anyone without kids unless it was low season, although you would have the restaurants and bars to yourself after 9pm.

There was some minor inconvenience when dealing over the phone with the front desk. The baby-sitter turned up on the wrong night and a taxi I asked for was not booked, so I felt compelled to double-check later each time I ordered something. And twice I was charged at a restaurant for a bottle of wine when I had ordered a glass. But these things happen anywhere and always it was dealt efficiently and good-heartedly, so I didn’t really care.

I would suggest to the owners in investing in a large space with a modern big playground facility to complement the other smaller play areas.

I highly recommend this place for those with kids, and we will be back.

My wife and I were extremely impressed by the genuineness of the welcome and the efficiency of the staff. Delicious seafood freshly caught each day by the local fishermen and delightfully presented was one of the highlights of our stay, ditto the crystal clear water of the bay. It was still warm enough to swim in the sea mid October, though most guests seem to prefer the pools. Wonderful Hibiscus plants in full bloom make a very attractive backdrop. The top-notch bike tours run by professional German cycle outfit was an excellent way to work off the pounds. A special thank you to Jose at reception who helped fix a technical fault with our hire car: service of this kind leaves an extremely favorable impression.

My husband and I had always avoided 'resort' type of holidays, but with two young children, we decided to give it a go, as previous 'independent trips' hadn't been at all relaxing. I had a very long list of criteria to satisfy; we all had our own room i.e. 3 rooms, self catering facilities but with all of the advantages of a hotel (maid service, restaurants etc. etc.), 2 hour flight (limit with small children), beach and pools to name just a few. This resort met them all. It was the best family holiday that we'd had to that point. Absolutely everything had been thought of - in our 3 bed house, they had dimmer switches over the cot, tupperware in the kitchen to take food to the beach...little things that make time away from home with small children that bit easier. The service was good and the food was excellent. We'd booked a partial sea view house but 'partial' was a little generous as you could barely see the sea...but it was great to be able to relax in the evenings once the little ones had gone to bed. Whist our holiday (flight and house) was good value....the cost of food when you're there was steep as was the mini market on site, but to a point this is to be expected I suppose. I would definitely use the supermarket in Sagres to stock up if we were to go again. I have recommended this to friends, who have since been and they have also had a great time. I wouldn't recommend to a couple mind you...definitely targets those with young children.

The Hotel room with FULL ocean view is spectacular. The view is great. There are staggered rooms each with a private balcony, furnished with quality outdoor chairs and table. The service upon arrival was fantastic. the drive was easy using a GPS/SatNav from Faro airport.Road tolls apply so make sure you have that covered under your car rental agreement.

The resort is geared... in my opinion, to Families only. As a guest without kids you may be challenged. The breakfast is always perfect. Best to include this with your hotel deal.Lots to choose from and the latte's are perfect every time!

Rooms, cleanly and made up as a 5* should be. Resort restaurants ..... something to be desired. i was expecting the best of local foods. over cooked an under cooked over priced for what you get but expected in a 5* resort. Some better places in Sagres for dinner. There are a few beach hut restaurants on the beach itself on Martinhal beach. much cheaper than resort food and just 1km down the road in Sagres is a fully stocked grocery store with everything you can think of.

The mini grocery store in the resort is great for back up with quality foodie stuff.

The beach is so nice. There are beach rentals, (windsurf, paddle boards, etc) all which can be booked to your room. The winds can be quiet strong but the pools can be an option if sand is blowing. There is friendly and helpful staff everywhere.

Super kid friendly, makes an easy stay for mom and dad. There is always something planned for rain days too. They cater to families well. we found this on baby-friendly boltholes and used tripadvisor for ratings.

i didn't know what to expect. it's better than i expected but not a 5* resort as the food is far from 5* i'd rate the lunch and dinner food as 3* with 5* prices. Breakfast is perfect!

recommend hotel ocean front with FULL view only 135-138. There are no better views and feels very private to the rest of the resort. The lower units are single rooms which can have a cot included. we booked direct with the hotel as the website was a bit ambiguous, which in the end.. you can book an ocean view with a baby. Just call and they will be glad to help.

Room Tip: recommend hotel ocean front with FULL view only 135-138.

This was our first holiday abroad with our two twin boys who are 15 months old. We booked directly with the hotel and they arranged transport from the airport which takes around 80 minutes. The taxi driver was extremely friendly and even had wifi and cartoons for the boys in the taxi which was a mercedes people carrier type thing with two baby seats so the boys could nap on the way there. The staff were incredibly helpful from the moment we arrived, checking us in quickly so we could get to our room. We rented two interconnecting beach rooms on ground floor level. They were exactly what we needed for our stay. They benefit from iPod docks and nespresso machines, bathrobes and flip flops, a huge bathroom with bath, walk n shower etc with luxury voya toiletries which are always restocked . Thee is a tv with various English channels, a large dressing table, mini bar and safe .The rooms themselves are very spacious and look directly out onto the sea. The boys had been given a cot each with an extra mattress added so they wee not uncomfortable! We also were provided with door protectors, in fact the hotel offers change mats, bath seats etc all complimentary. Rooms are cleaned daily and there is a turn down service at night. The housecleaning team knew when our boys napped in the day and would clean the room in between and the turn down service did not try knocking on there door in the evening as they knew they would be asleep.
As it was my husbands birthday when we stayed the hotel gave us two bottles of champagne on arrival and a lovely chocolate cake on his actual birthday which was a really lovely gesture.
We found the breakfast in the morning plentiful and the boys loved the amount of choice!
We tended to use the beach pool and the pool near the village square the most. All four pool areas have a childrens pool as well and the always seemed the be an abundance of toys and inflatables to use. There are also a few play areas , our boys loved the swings! As we travelled in October it did not seem busy or over run and the weather was beautiful and not windy at all.
We ate most days in the m bar and as dunas, the service in both was efficient, and the boys food always bought out first as they knew they were hungry.
The convenience store was a little pricey, so if bringing toddlers make sure you pack enough wipes and nappies, also items like Ella's kitchen and organix bars etc were nearly six euros a pack , which is a lot but I guess they are imported goods, so will attract a premium!
The beach is amazing, great for kids as lovely and sandy but the water slightly too cold for me, and is easily accessible from the hotel.
I went to the spa for several treatments which were lovely. There is a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna which you can use any time, even if you are not having a treatment. I found this great as I could pop up,in the day when the boys were napping and my husband was looking after them and just enjoy some quiet time reading my book in the relaxation area. There is also complimentary green tea and mineral water there, along with robes and towels etc.
the gym is small but has everything you could need, and was never busy. It's open until 8pm.
As our boys go to bed early we used room service or the take away facility from the Italian. Both were great and we enjoyed a meal out on our veranda every night.
We will definetly be back next year as this hotel really does to out its way to cater for children whilst still maintaining a five star feel. Thank you to all staff at the hotel for making our stay great!

This is my third visit to the Martinhal Beach resort. My friend and I stayed in a Bay house, the same as last year. Last year was wonderful, unfortunately we were a little disappointed this year and so would rate the resort as 4*. Our villa, compared with last year, looked a little tired with stains on the furniture, chipped paintwork, cobwebs in corners, chipped worktops, need I go on? There were nasty smells eminating from the drains in the bathrooms and a decomposing rodent type smell in one of the bedrooms. The beds are very comfortable but, oh dear, the pillows!! Plastic covered feather pillows that were very over inflated and made the back of one's hair and neck so hot and sticky they were unbearable, and not all of them smelled very nice I have to say. The lighting in the main upstairs room is so bad that it was almost impossible to see to read in the evening, despite having ALL the lights on, the bulbs must have been really low wattage. Ants also seemed to be a problem this year.

The grounds are a feature of the resort but we saw fewer gardeners around this year. In fairness they must be working doubly hard as it all still looked very pretty.

There are lots of manuals in the villas advising how to use the various appliances but we couldn't find anything telling us about the resort itself or what was available on site. We didn't use the restaurants at all this year, preferring to cook our own food, as previous experiences and other comments from guests were not particularly encouraging. What we would have liked was some form of live musical entertainment in the bar area for adults only to enjoy, with no admittance to children. I am a mother and a grandmother, I like children, but surely there is somewhere where adults can enjoy a couple of hours without children being included?

I would like to give a gold star to David Aresta in reception. An extremely agreeable and polite young man who was very nice and helpful. (No, I am not a relation!)

I am not sure if we will return next year. After paying so much for the villa and then the air fare on top, and spending money, this was a holiday that was looked forward to immensely but didn't live up to our expectations. Nowhere near as good as last year, what a shame Martinhal.

Thank you for sharing your impressions on your recent stay with us. We regret to know that not all your expectations towards your Bay House were met and we apologise for any inconveniences experienced.

Kindly note that your comments have been registered and presented to our Housekeeping and Maintenance Departments and will be addressed accordingly. We assure you that your experience has no resemblance with our usual standards for which we are renowned.

We have had a very high occupancy on our resort since April this year and so we are sorry to hear your house was not up to standard you expected. During the low season we have an opportunity to carry out all the Maintenance and Housekeeping work required throughout the resort.

We regret not knowing of your impressions on the bed pillows during your stay as our Housekeeping Team would have gladly changed the pillows if requested. Kindly note that in our beds have 2 different types of pillows: feathers and hallo-fill / ball-fill so they can be easily exchanged.

Further to your comments regarding the ants, we apologize once again for the inconveniences experienced. As Martinhal is surrounded by a Natural Park we are prone to these type of unwanted visits by insects. Given our environmental restrictions and safety concerns of our youngest clients, we are limited in the choice of products that we can apply to control it, nevertheless our Housekeeping Team are on hand to resolve these problems once reported to either reception or Guest Services.

In relation to your comments on the blocked drains we are sorry for not knowing earlier that your villa had this problem as our Maintenance Team would have gladly repaired this immediately.

Kindly note that our Guest Service and Front Office Teams are always available to assist our clients with any queries or questions during the stay and also encourage any feedback.
On this note please allow us to inform that one of the objectives of the Guest Services Department is to contact all clients during the stay. Our first approach is done by telephoning all our clients within the first 24h of arrival and if, for some reason we fail to reach our clients, a card is delivered in the accommodation with a welcome message (introducing the Guest Services Team, how to reach us and informing that we are available for any assistance through the stay). Also as you might understand, there is a fine line between presenting our services and being understood as over-imposing.

Thank you for your recognition of David Aresta in our reception, we will pass on to him your appreciation of his service.

We all hope that the good memories of your stay surpass the less positive ones. We will look forward to your return to Martinhal where you will experience our positive progress.
