“Christmas and birthday celebration”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2012

we have stayed a number of times in this hotel and it never lets us down, the overall experience is simply excellent, from the moment we book in, to the golf and dinning and friendliness of all the staff.
we celebrated my wife's 60th birthday when we were there and the hotel surprised us with a cake and a glass of champagne in the restaurant, which was a lovely touch and very much appreciated .
we look forward to returning very soon.

Room Tip: pool view rooms are lovely

This is a very nice hotel, depending on want you want to do. For us it was go to the beach in the morning, go to the pool in the afternoon and have dinner at the perfect Buganvilia restaurant in the nearby vila of Alvor. We were there for 4 nights and actually extended for one more night as we were feeling so very well treated. The hotel is right near one the highway exits so very easy to access, but a little bit far, of course, from the beach. There is a free shuttle that takes you to the beach though where you have access to towels.

The standard rooms are a bit on the small size (maybe 22m2 ours) and we ended up changing rooms because the one we had and apparently most of the standard ones with only one queen size bed are connecting so we had children crying and running the first day of our stay. Since we wanted privacy and quiet they let us change which was nice and much more convenient to a studio room on the top floor.

What we enjoyed the most was the breakfast, the room had lots of light and space and the food was fresh and tasty. The only minor was that I felt they could've included more portuguese pastry which is so rich into the buffet menu. There was one portuguese pastry per day but after the third day it was always the same two kinds rotating. It is really just a detail since I feel it's a missed oportunity to showcase what we do so well in Portugal.

In general, I'd recommend this hotel to people who want to golf but also for couples if you stay in a more private room and for families because the pool is just enormous and so delightful that I couldn't get out.

Room Tip: If with family they have connecting rooms, if with partner maybe try to chose a room on the top floo...

Every few years we try a different hotel and golf courses in the Algarve but we always return to Penina. Most of the staff have been there for years and they really do seem to care about their guests. The rooms and facilities are quite acceptable for a 5* hotel and the traditional style of the place actually makes it feel more homely, informal and relaxed than some of the newer glitzy alternatives.

The golf course is like an English course so it's perfect for winter golf. Quite long and challenging - especially for ladies - but you don't need a buggy to get round it, the first tee is right outside the hotel and, as a resident it doesn't cost 80+ euros a round.

Signing up for the hotel's 'meal deal' makes the cost of a three course dinner in one of the hotels restaurants around 30 euros, a fair price for the quality and again, no need to drive.

Ifyou want a relaxing, friendly 5* golfing holiday then you should go to Penina - nowhere else in the Algarve beats it for quality and price.

Room Tip: Pay the supplement to get a golf course view

Just spent a week here with friends, golfing each day. Hotel excellent, enormous breakfast, rooms spotless, all staff friendly, homely atmosphere. The golf is tough for ladies but survived the championship course and cannot wait to return!

Stayed for a week. first night we had a room with " mountain view " , more like a parking view ..
Next morning for a reasonable supplement we moved for a room with a view of the golf course,
facing south . Money well spent, my little lady was quite pleased .
Staff all around effcient, curteous and smiling. Fully enjoyed playing PENINA, and we benefited
of an attractive afternoon rate which they kindly offered us as arly as 12h00.

PS if you are there on a sunday evening dont miss the ELVIS look alike at the bar.
At the restaurant I recommend the pork cheeks with the local wine from across the street.

Room Tip: Very important to be on the golf side , better view , more un and less noise

Dear Guest,

We read your review and are happy to learn that you have enjoyed your stay at Le Méridien Penina.

It is a pleasure to read that you found our staff courteous and efficient, the golf was enjoyable, the Elvis show was worth seeing and that the food was complemented with a good local wine.

You were given the option to move to a pool facing room, and you have obviously appreciated the view , which contributed to the overall positive impression of your stay.

We hope to greet you back very soon for your next stay at LM Penina.

Myself and 7 pals have just returned from Le Meridien Penina after a short golf break. After a bit of a nightmare at the airport ( the arrivals hall at Faro is closed after a storm blew the roof off ) we were late for out tee time but they sent us straight to the changing rooms sorted out our luggage and accommodated us on the golf course. We managed to get 16 holes in before it got dark due to the efficiency of the hotels staff.
The rooms at Meridien are fairly standard however alot of the lads commented on how comfortable the beds are. Good power shower, coffee making facilities and dressing gowns. Our rooms looked over the car park which wasnt a problem but it would have been nice to overlook the course as I imagine the views are spectacular
Breakfast was great with a wide selection of cooked and continental fare, cereals, fruit, omelettes, croissants, We were B and B so really made the most of it and filled up for the day. Cant comment on the evening meals as we ate out.
Drinks were pricey but you dont go to a hotel of this quality and expect to pay pub prices. Besides at £169 for 3 nights and 3 rounds of golf its an absolute steal. If I have one comment though I do think it is a liberty charging 5 Euros for bottles of juice and 2 Euros for a bar of chocolate, just seems unnecessary.
As for the golf, WOW. I think theyve had a fair bit of rain and we had some hefty showers while there but the course is in fantastic condition. Lush fairways, receptive greens and a really fair test of golf for all the lads with handicaps between 6 and 19. My favourite holes were the par 5 fifth ( i think) which tempts you to go for the green in 2, the tough par 4 ninth dog leg left to a two tier green, and par 3 13th over water. As for the par 5 18th if theres a better finishing hole in golf Ive not played it yet. Fantastic views of the hotel from this hole as well. Our organiser was worried we would get tired of playing the same course but to a man the lads said they would definitely return to play again
The hotel itself is quite isolated but we hopped in a taxi to Alvor a little harbor town a couple of nights to eat and have a few bevvies. Obviously its pretty quiet in November but there was enough going on to keep a few forty somethings occupied.
A little tip, if you walk out the hotel turn right and stroll half a mile up the road theres a little restaurant which sells good nosh at a very fair price. We sat there, first night quaffing claret, shooting the breeze in a really relaxed atmosphere and the lady owner was really welcoming.
As a group we have a couple of trips away every year in England but this is the first time weve gone abroad and everybody seems intent on making it an annual event. Dont think we could have done much better than Le Meridien Penina and I am almost certain we will be returning in future years.

We have visited Penina every year for around the past 15 years as a family, couple, and mixed golfing group. The hotel may not be in the best position in the Algarve or have lots of hotel facilities, but it certainly makes up for it in its general quality, its staff, and the championship golf course and golfing facilities. The majority of the managerial staff have worked in the hotel in the same area for a number of years, they take pride in their work, and are fully aware of the service that is expected of them. The reservation team are excellent in planning all aspects of your stay, reception welcoming, hotel spotlessly clean, well appointed rooms, outstanding food in all 3 restaurants, excellent service in Monchique bar, friendly and helpful staff in golf shop, challenging and well maintained golf course (average 4.5 hours a round). The hotel is relaxed but efficient. As with any hotel there may be issues, at Penina there is an experienced duty manager always on call, and in our experience any issues are quickly rectified. Prices are reasonable for a hotel of this quality, a package of meals can be purchased which can be used for evening meals in any of the 3 restaurants which represents excellent value. Penina is a special place for all of my family. we are welcomed and treated as valued customers, and we hope that we will be in a position to return for many years to come.

Room Tip: All rooms are similar in layout, but if possible it is worth booking a pool view room. The hotel off...

Dear Guest,

We were delighted to read on tripadvisor that you had a great stay with us at LM Penina. And it is most rewarding to see that you have taken the time to mention the wonderful holiday experiences you had in the past 15 years whilst visiting as a family, a couple or with golfing friends.

It was very nice to see your observations on the services provided by many of our staff members, who work exceptionally hard to make every guest feel special, such as the reservations department, and the staff in the golf shop.

It is true that we have a Duty Manager always on call, because even though we want to provide the best service, sometimes as with any hotel there may be flaws, and we want to make sure we have someone available to handle situations and solve any issues as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for staying with us and we hope to see you in the near future, and for many years to come.

Kind Regards
