“Wonderful snapshot of history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

Really enjoyed learning about the sardine canning history of Portimao. Well done exhibits on the history of the area, only problem for me was no English translations. The excellent video, The Sardine Game, set in 1948, has English subtitles.

“Interesting to see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2012

Interesting to see and to learn some history how south Portuguese people were used to live in the coast. There is also nice staff, always ready to answer to the questions. Well done.

“Interesting exhibition of Sardine canning”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2010

Portimao used to be a little fishing town, and this museum has reconstructed one of the sardine canning factories using original machinery. Everything is in Portuguese, so ensure you sit and watch the video (from 1946!) just inside the door before looking round the factory - you may not understand the voice over, but you will be able to follow the process enough to know what you're looking at.
As well as the sardine factory you can also see the usual local archaeological bits, and go down into a waterway where they used to collect rainwater.
At just 3 euros per person we found it to be excellent value for money.
