Praia de luz has grown dramaticaly over the last 10 years since we last went,it seems the brits have found out about this little hidden gem of the algarve.Lots of building has taken place and is still developing, its become an ex pats paradise. One of the problems due to the growth are the restaurants there`s not enough,if you don`t book especialy for evenings in peak season you mayfind yourself going out for 6.30 before the rush or having to go back later in the evening when space becomes available. Our favourite was the fortalezza, and the junction 17 bar or also known as carlos bar.The oasis appartment we stayed in was very nice and spacious. We were in block D upper level, this block gets the sun from lunchtime till evening so if you like sitting and relaxing on the balcony its ideal. The grounds themselves are pretty sparse they would look better with more green areas. The downside to the appartments is the pool area it is extremely small and cramped very claustrophobic.Inflatibles littered the pool area at one stage i counted 12 in the pool, now that wouldn`t be to bad but the pools only about 15 ft wide by about 30ft long. There is a struggle for sunbeds some are broke and you have to do the dawn dash for the prime spot for sunbeds. At any one time there is nearly always only one person working between the snack bar and reception so consequently when people check in or out the bar area is left unattended and you can wait up to 15 minutes for a drink. The indoor pool is nice and the jacuzzi is also, but who wants to swim indoors in nice wether. The gym is a no go area as all the peices of equipment are broken. The steam-room works but the sauna was out of action for the two weeks we were there. Whilst we were there the appartments accross the way were broken into in daylight hours. These appartments are farthest away from the pool area. The safes were broken into and money and passports were taken. The police were called. This appartment block has a narrow alley in front with foliage hanging over, ideal for a break in. If you stay in this block i recommend you use your window shutters when not staying indoors. On our return to england my wife and daughter had english money missing from there purses, i know we didn`t use the safe but our appartment wasnt broken into, so be wary of chambermaids. For the two weeks we were there we used another hotels pool and bar with no problems it was absolutley fantastic plenty of sunbeds and the choice of three pools. I wont tell you which hotel but look around if your not satisfied with the oasis pool. In all i don't think we would return to Luz again but probrally would try Lagos next time. Also the prices in the supermarkets for self catering and the restaurants were more expensive in the Luz area,Lagos was considerably cheaper. We did two trips while we were here the jeep safari which is recommended and the bom dia boat trip which was also fun.
