The area around the Lagos Lighthouse penninsula is breathtaking. We spent several hours exploring but when we returned the car lock had been pulled out and things from the trunk stolen. Nothing valuable was there but the inconvenience of not having some of those things for the rest of the trip and paying the car rental company over $200.00 for the lock was more than aggravating. "Theft and pickpockets" are "a real problem in Portugal" - I wish the local police cared enough about the benefits of tourism to their cities to at least have a random presence in popular tourist areas. For the rest of our trip we were hyper-vigilant which took away some of the pleasure of a vacation. So "Beware" everywhere in Portugal and Madeira.
