“Small, friendly & immaculately clean.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2009

My husband & I stayed for one week in Sept 09. All staff spoke good English & were always pleasant & helpful.. No tea/coffee facilities in the room but we knew this before we travelled so took a travel kettle, a couple of mugs & sachets of coffee. The continental breakfast was lovely. Everywhere was immaculately clean. The en suite shower room was looking worn out but served it's purpose. No lotions or potions (which I usually expect in a four star hotel) except for soap & some shower cream in a dispenser. Takes about 20min to walk in to Lagos old town where there is an abundance of restaurants but if you prefer a short walk there are also a few restaurants much closer to the hotel.

We spent a week in August 2009 at the hotel. The staff were really helpful and friendly, especially Mrs Lena, and I would definitely recommend a stay there. We're already considering returning in a couple of years time.

Background info:

The bedrooms and swimming pool and well-maintained, and the area is quiet at night-time. There is a local roundabout with 3 decent restaurants which we found was enough to keep us interested for a week, especially with the local fresh fish.

The walk from the hotel to the main beach is about 40 mins but you can walk through the cobbled streets of shops and cafes which makes it a pleasant one. Taxis to and from the town are 3.5 Euros so if you don't want to walk this is pretty cheap. There are closer beaches which are more picturesque but the sand is gravelly and the seaside a bit too rocky if you have young kids.

Getting to the hotel from Faro is best done using a direct transfer (booked taxi) which the hotel staff can arrange for you - you'll save 40 Euros this way. We tried to do the journey by train but I wouldn't recommend it. You'll save 30 Euros but it is very slow and uncomfortable, and you'll need to find a taxi either side of the train trip.

My bf and I stayed here while making our through Portugal on a budget, this place was by far the highlight of the trip. The family that runs it is amazing and truly helpful, the location is not directly in downtown, but a perfect walking distance with the beach a few blocks away. The breakfast was probably the best I had on our trip, fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs, sandwiches etc. Highly recommend - great value!

We stayed for a golfing break, selecting it after reading the reviews here. Breakfast was from 8.30am, which could have been a problem for us, but owners were very flexible when asked, happy to help, and they set out an earlier breakfast for us one day. Rooms not massive, and had dark wood & tiling traditional-style. Very peaceful and quiet hotel, and nice ambience in and around the bar area. Really excellent value for money at 45 Euros/night.

After reading great reviews from other travellers ,myself & partner booked a weeks' stay at this great wee hotel. We were not disappointed.
It's very homely & welcoming if you don't like the hussle & bussle of lager establishments. The food is home made by Lina who works very hard & Carlos her brother manages things both humourously & thoughtfuly along with Ben throughout the evenings.
Lagos itself is not such an attractive prospect. There are lots of nice eating places but that's nearly it. The grottos are worth discovering through kayaking excursions & the dolphin watching on the 'red boat' was also a great experience, but the town itself is too built up to be memorable & this includes the mairina.Often on our walk to the centre we had to avoid lots of dog dirt & it just did not feel like it was a well looked after town.

So.. Solar de mos is an excellent little place but lagos has lost its' way through its built up newness & lack of care.

I would agree with previous reviews of this excellent family run hotel. Much has already been said; it is quiet, clean, relaxed, small (15 rooms) and friendly. We were a family with two teenage girls and probably not typical of their guests ( mainly couples). Even so, we were welcomed and felt very relaxed. The walk into lagos does take about 20 minutes, downhill on the way, uphill on the way back but not unpleasant for the fit.
The nearest beech is 10 minutes walk (Playa De Mos) and excellent.
Enjoy this hotel, it deserves the credit we have all given it.

we picked this hotel after reading the many good reports on tripadvisor so we went with high hopes, well we were not dissappointed to say this is a good hotel undervalues the service, cleanliness and peace that this hotel gives,it is a small hotel about 16 rooms i think, and was full most of the time but you would not know this as the most we saw around the pool was 10 plenty of sun beds no towels on them no music only your own on your i pod so others dont have to listen.the room was a reasonable size kept clean by two very good cleaners fresh linen and towels every day. breakfast was continental type with cereals, fruit, yoghurts, cheese, coldmeats, boiled eggs, bread &butter jams coffee tea orange and water.
lena and carlos made you feel like family guests in there home as the hotel is fitted out like a traditional portugese home and their hospitality was exceptional along with there staff allways ready to serve but never pushing you, a small bar well stocked is manned all day and evening where you can mix with other guests who are a good mix of europeans americans and canadiens .
as for location it is in a fairly quiet area 15 mins from town centre and 10 from two beaches, the walk into town is down hill all the way we taxied back 5euros inc tip, plenty of restraunts and bars for most tastes although i would recomend a restraunt called no patio as we thought it was the best food we had in lagos.
so summing up we would recomend this hotel for anyone wanting to get away from it all as you will come home fully refreshed thank you Lena,Carlos,Ben,Chantelle(tea time!) KIKI&PAT
