“Great hotel - wonderful holiday!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Aqualuz self-catering for a week in July 2012 and had an amazing holiday.

We booked a studio apartment but were upgraded to a one bedroom apartment which was lovely. The welcome drink voucher we were provided with on arrival was also a nice touch. We had a separate kitchen area with very well stocked cupboards (even tupperware boxes and a coffee maker!) The only thing missing (as other reviewers have mentioned) was a kettle so I would advise you to bring a travel one.

The apartment was very clean, air conditioned and we had a huge balcony overlooking the pools. You don't need to bring a hair dryer as you have one in the bathroom.

We decided to stay on a self catering basis as we enjoy trying different restaurants, but ate in the hotel on our first night as we were starving hungry after our journey. The food was ok (buffet style), but seemed a bit overpriced if you compared it to the prices we paid in other (nicer) restaurants. We had coffee in the poolside bar one morning too, which was expensive (around 5 euros for two coffees) - we'd recommend that you wander down to the Spar supermarket cafe instead and enjoy a delicious 1 euro coffee (and pastries) instead.

The staff (particularly one of the receptionists) were all very friendly and helpful and the place was very well run. We had a slight problem with a small leak in our bathroom one eveningand a handyman came to repair it within an hour or so of reporting and a cleaner came to mop up the water.

We never had any problems finding sunloungers - although there are a limited number of loungers with umbrellas but we always managed to find a couple spare. The two pools were very clean although cold! It was lovely being able to pop up to the apartment for a quick lunch on the balcony before returning to the pool area.

I didn't use the gym/spa although my husband did and was pleased with the facilities (you get free daily entry).

Great location - ten minutes walk to the old town and ten minutes to the nearest beach. All in all a fabulous and relaxing holiday.

We will definitely stay here again if we return to Lagos!

I read reviews on trip advisor thinking take them with a pinch of salt as the people who wrote reviews probably are extremely fussy, however I am not extremely fussy, I have been very happy with lots of hotels I've stayed in from 2stars though to 5 stars.

The apartment was very spacious, had all the bits u needed in. Beds were very hard & just 2 singles pushed together.

The location from the town was a good 15 minutes walk to just enter town, then to find a good restaurant was another 10, no good if you are elderly, have children or like convenience! Each of the restaurants in Lagos are ok... However they pretty much have the same menu in each place! In the evenings we were taken aback how chilly it was! Jeans, trousers, jackets are needed, it is extremely windy & cold! We have been Cyprus, Greece & Tunisia & never once have we had to wear layers in the evening!

The beaches... Dona ana the nearest is about 10/15 minute walk away, lots of steps to get down & gets so busy there is hardly anywhere to sit. Meia Praia is about 20 min walk then water taxi across to beach. Do not expect the sea to be warm as it is not!! It is freezing as cold as the sea in England.

The staff in the hotel were rude! The only 2 people who were nice were a guy behind reception, young & smiley, & pedro in the restaurant, everyone else didn't speak English or was just very rude!!!

The pool was absolutely freezing cold, I thought the sun would have heated it but it is literally like a plunge pool, in July in the heat it is nice to have a pool to go in and out of but it was a mission to even get in the pool in the first place, when you were in you had to keep moving to even stay warm & couldn't stay in long! There is always sun loungers at the pool.

The food at the hotel was not 4 star. There is not much choice on the snack menu & when we ordered chicken baguette we ended up with coleslaw baguette with few scrapes of chicken. Not good!!! Breakfast was ok... Toast & tea most mornings with stale croissants if you wished!

Overall I have to say I had a lovely time in Lagos with my boyfriend, we always have fun together however we definately will not return to Lagos, & if we did aqualuz would not be the place we would stay in!!!

We stayed at Aqualuz 18th June - 9th July.
- Fine apartment with Balcony facing the pool area
- Beatiful pool area with many sunbeds
- Very impressive daily cleaning in the pool area, not so impressive in the apartments
- Nice but expensive pool bar
- The dinner buffet was nothing to brag about
- Kind and helpful staff
- Dona Ana beach is spectacular but three sunbeds cost 20 Euros to rent!
- Cold in the water, 18 degrees perhaps (big differance compared to Eastern Algarve)
- Strong and annoying wind in the evening, jackets are necessary
- Recommended restaurants: the Triangulo near the Hotel (excellent meat), the chinese rest. vis a vis, O' Charco in the centre of Lagos
- Recommended activities: a visit to St Antonio church in the centre which has an impressive room decorated with gold. A visit to Lagos zoo. Horseback ridning at Tiffanys (on the way to Sagres). A walk to Ponta Piedade with a breathtaking view (20-30 minutes from the Hotel)

The half board choice of food is very limited, you're not receiving any description of meals. You have to pay extra for all drinks with the dinner. The breakfast orange juice is artificial. Some balconies are always in the shadow and a bit smaller. A nice suprise is indoor spa for free, although one of the staff was extremely rude. No entertainment in the evenings and lacking any portuguese character.
The rooms were clean and large with plenty of kitchen equipment and the outdoor pool was a good size.
Basically if you choose this hotel I would only take the Room only option the you shouldn't be too dissapointed.

Room Tip: Ask for a sunny balcony if you like it

We had been to Portugaal before to Lisboa and Coimbro.but never been to the coast. The holiday was booked last minute and put together by the travel agent using flexible trips. We had no idea of what to expect so were pleasantly suprised . From our arrival at reception all staff were pleasant and helpful which continued throughout our stay with breakfast team, cleaning staff, bar staff. There is a strong emphasis on customer care. Thr apart hotel offers best of both worlds and means that you dont have a big brother checking whether you have stored drinks in a hotel fridge or drinking supermarket drinks at the pool... but you can have the option of breakfasting hotel style. Breakfast continental with a small range of hot food. All fresh and lots of food eaten by the side of the pool. Lots of sunbeds to be had around the 2 pools. never had a problem finding one. Did not use the leisure club gym etc but seemed to have a wide range of equipment and was also a members club.. Range of pamper treatments can be had too.
Room cleaned daily, well equipped kitchen.. but no kettle so had to boil water in a pan. but not really a prob.
Air con in room but not used as the temps drop at night. The animation team was always busy with the youngsters and was very well run. Family friendly hotel with many families there with young babies all enjoying the pool .
Short walk down to town.. 10 mins once you learn the short route via the town arch.
Fab stay and hope to visit again.

Room Tip: go for the one bedroom suite even if there are just the 2 of you!

Very friendly staff. Apartment clean, strange things missing though, like a kettle & bowls! Am sure we could have got these on request, but sadly only here for a weekend. Quiet at nights, easy 10 mins to town (harder back as up hill!). Pool great with plenty of sunbeds to go round. Lagos is a beautiful town to visit, lots of little streets to go exploring, and the food seemed to be of a consistently high standard (or we just got very lucky). Would come back to Lagos & stay at aqualuz again, hopefully for longer.

Room Tip: They all seemed to be overlooking the pool!

We have just got back from a lovely two weeks at the Aqualuz. We had a one bedroom apartment and everything was great - clean and comfortable. The weather on our first week was a bit breezy and chilly but it warmed up on the second week. We don't usually spend much time around hotel pools but the area at the Aqualuz was so nice that we did on a couple of days. We would recommend the Porto De Mos beach which is about a 15 minute walk away from Lagos towards Luz. It was actually quicker and easier to reach than Meia Praia and the sunbeds at the other beaches weren't at all comfortable. Also, we suggest you eat at Arribale as we went there twice and everythign about the meal (food, ambience, service) was excellent.
