So,... I really don't want to write this because I want to make sure that they have room for me in the future whenever I feel like coming over to the Algarve in Portugal and writing a review of my experience with them really won't help to up my chances with that... *sigh*
But they asked me to do so, so here we go:
I stayed in the Jah Shaka Surf Villa, which is one of their two offers for accomodation (1. appartments closer to the beach where you live by your own OR 2. the Villa)
...their "main place to be", located just outside of Luz, a little Village with a beach, shops, restaurants etc., 10-20 minutes west of Lagos, the biggest city in that area.
In the Villa you can choose between camping in a tent outside on their little campingground, a 10-bed-dormroom with a large ensuite bathroom and a terrace (with stairs connecting in to the garden, room for drying your stuff or chilling in the sun...)
OR smaller 'private rooms' with a double bed each and, depending on the room, (a) loft bed(s), which are usually booked by couples or fixed groups of friends.
The price rises in the same order as listed.
I stayed in the dorm room and what I got there was exactly what I wanted:
a comfy bed, enough storage room for my stuff, access to a really cool bathroom with a clean shower and toilet, instant contact to all the other cool international travellers which was very important to me as I travelled alone, respectful and quiet inhabitants...
and therefore and most importantly: good rest from an action packed and exhausting day!
If you're sensible bring a sleep mask and ear plugs but you'll be more than fine anyways.
But more importantly: on to the days:
You can choose from Mountainbiking, Kayaking, Yoga, Kitesurfing, Stand-Up Paddling and of course, for what most people are there: SURFING for which they have own instructors and material. The other activities are just organized by them but include stress free pickup/transport to and from.
I did a 5-day 2x2hours/day beginners surf course and was able to ride my first fully unbroken (green) wave up to the beach on my 8th day of surfing during my 13day stay. (which felt awesome)
The course started at 10 and everything is really chill and stress free:
after your delicious breakfast (w pancakes!! goddamnit: PANCAKES) you just grab a wetsuit from them, help to load your board, hop in one of the vans with everyone else and off you go for a 6-8 hour day full of sun, beach, surfing and coaching, learning about waves and the ocean, sightseeing, relaxing, tanning, lunch (is included!), cool people, GREAT views, lots of salty water in your mouth and a big load of muscle soreness.
The beach you go to can be different on a daily basis, based on forecast and conditions. We even changed beaches between morning and afternoon session when conditions got worse and were better elsewhere.
This might sound stressfull but it's not, it's awesome!!, because not only do you learn to surf but you really get a sight seeing tour of the _entire_ coastline (west and south) with truly breathtaking views of the cliffy coastline of the most sout-west point of europe and you get to discover all these cool little, beautiful beaches.
After that day, if you have energy left, you can chillax w a beer or whatever, get into one of their three showers, get fresh and then it's off to yoga or it's barbecue (freaking good) day or it's everyone-goes-out-to-Lagos-for-drinks-day or it's burger-day or it's italian-lasagne-for-everyone-day. You pay for your drinks and food outside and you chip in for the Barbecue at the villa, which is a variety of freshly grilled, delicious and healthy veggies and meat, sangria and sometimes even a little craziness afterwards. (I've heard <_<...)
But regardless of what day it is, almost every day is meet-super-cool-international-people-and-learn-a-whole-lot-cool-new-stuff-just-by-talking-to-each-other-day.
Might be a lucky coincidence, but might not, as I stayed with them we had a group of America, Scottland, UK, Netherlands, Russia, Australia, France...
We all went out for gorgeous and delicious area-specific dinner, had drinks, made new friends, talked and really enjoyed the multicultural vibe.
This holiday was everything I asked for and this place is on my "come again and/or refer to friends"-list.
They have a funny dog. They have free wifi, a TV, a printer, a computer, a pool, hammocks, sitting bags, super friendly staff, everything is clean, the area is beautiful and warm (I was there in Ocotber)..., you can have courses or you can just rent your own stuff, you can arrange airport pick ups that always work (....), you can park your own car in front of the villa, you can bring your own boards, you can just use the vans for transport and surf on your own...
what more can you ask for,..
I don' know: maybe freshly baked brownies and cakes and massages that you can buy and the money then goes to a charity in Africa.
OH WAIT - THEY EVEN HAD THAT..
no, seriously, they had that.
(limited time though, I guess)
I liked it there and I'll come back
