“Offline at fantastic resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

We had a fantastic 12 nights stay at Cascade in mid June just before the high season kicks off and we will not hesitate to recommend this hotel to others planning a trip to Algarve and Lagos.

This is a two year old unique resort excellent located with sea view five minutes drive from Lagos old town. The rooms are spacious with large terraces. Bathrooms with tub, shower and double sinks. TV with movie rental service and a selection of news and European channels (UK, Germany, Spain etc.). Unfortunately there is no facility for making coffee or tea in the room. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choices! Cascade has a very friendly and warm staff that was very helpful with everything from scanning documents to getting a softer top to the bed. They have a nice gym, bigger than we have seen at other similar resorts. If you bring a rental car you can park in the basement and the elevator will bring you straight to your hotel room floor. Three minutes by car from the hotel you will find a big Intermarché supermarket.

Cascade is on the edge of one of Algarve's famous limestone cliffs. A few minutes climb down a path from the hotel is a beautiful secluded white sandy beach. If You are not a beach person the hotel has a huge pool. They also have a pool for small children nearby with sun beds for the parents so they don't have to disturb other guests.

Unfortunately the internet situation at this resort is not on a level you would expect from any modern European hotel in 2013, especially a 5 star hotel. Coming from Norway (and Scandinavia) where all aspects of everyday life is online you expect to easily surf the web when on holiday in Europe; read the news, emails, do banking, social media, download a movie to you iPad or a book to your Kindle. This was very difficult with both bad Wi-Fi reception and in general a very slow service. We made a speedtest around the resort and the result was depressing; on average we got 2,5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload (!). This hotel will seriously need to improve this situation; set up a proper network of Wi-Fi transmitters around the resort so all the rooms and pool/restaurant areas can be proparly connected to the World Wide Web. When this is in place they will need to boost the speed for both downloading and uploading. Right now this is so slow we even had trouble reading our local newspaper online. And last; don't give guests internet vouchers with complicated passwords where you have to re-log in every ten minutes. You need a modern and easy log in system using name and room number where you can connect with unlimited number of devices (we had five devices we wanted to connect in our room and it was a big hassle). The friendly staff tried several times to help us with the internet situation but it seamed like the problem was bigger than hey could handle. 45% of Portugal's adult population have never used the internet so it might be that there is little understanding for what must be in place to attract guests from northern Europe to a resort like this.

We stayed here last fall and had such a wonderful experience, we decided to come back and bring our three adult children. Cascades staff unquestionably provide the best service of any hotel we have stayed at including North America, Caribbean, France, Greece, Italy, England, and Scotland. Their attention to detail while being genuinely friendly and helpful is second to none. They even packed us a lovely picnic basket with Algarvian salad with chicken, champagne and a bottle of their local white port for us to take on our sailing adventure day trip. Last trip we stayed in a room in the hotel and this time we stayed in one of their three bedroom self-contained apartment units. We made use of their spa, driving range, tennis courts, pools, gym, restaurants and bars. The resort is very private and quiet but is 5 mins from the various beaches, golf courses, horseback riding and the town of Lagos.

Room Tip: All rooms that face the pool also have a great view of the ocean, especially on the second floor. T...

Stayed here for 4 nights. Exceptional property, great location , stunning beaches nearby and right next to facilities, culture and restaurants of Lagos. The staff are excellent. For me though there are a couple of improvement points. The cost at the bar and in house restaurants is very high. I know you expect 5 star prices but , c'mon, 5 euros for a large water? Most people staying here won't bat an eyelid at that but for me it's a bit of a rip-off when the same bottle costs 1 euro 50 in town. The service is generally excellent and 5 star - but is let down on occasion. When I enquired about the courtesy bus into town I was told it wasn't available and to get a taxi instead. The other clear improvement point is the WiFi which is amongst the most user unfriendly I've ever experienced.

It's a superb place though overall and I would return

We had an absolutely delightful stay at Cascade. My boyfriend and I stayed in one of the one-bed apartments, as we like to have the option of cooking as well as eating out. The apartment itself was larger than our flat at home which was a real treat. Good quality equipment in the kitchen. Very comfortable bed with a range of pillows to choose from. Great power shower too. Lovely terrace overlooking the pool with two sun-loungers and a dining table.

The complex itself was lovely and quiet which added to the tranquillity and peacefulness. The main pool was a little cold for me but I think this summer in the Algarve has definitely been colder than average which has caused this. As the resort is on top of a cliff the wind gets up a fair bit, so I would recommend a light scarf if you get cold easily. My partner took advantage of the driving range, clubs are available to hire for free from reception. The beach at the bottom of the cliff was a 7 minute walk and absolutely deserted.

We had dinner at Moods restaurant twice, and we were impressed. Huge portions and great value for money. (20euros for a huge and delicious seafood stew) We found Senses restaurant nice if you prefer slightly fancier food, but maybe not quite as good value for money. Good wine selection too.

The service is what makes this place stand out. Wonderfully friendly and helpful reception staff. The shuttle bus in to town was not available, so they paid for cabs instead. They were able to recommend and reserve tables at all the best restaurants in Lagos (definitely visit O Camilo restaurant which is a 10 minute walk out of the resort). On our last day they lent us a spare room so we could shower as we weren't leaving for a few hours after we had checked out. Just overall very friendly staff, always smiley that made us feel very welcome.

If you want a peaceful holiday, with a great selection of local restaurants in nearby Lagos, and a few activities (a day at the Waterpark Slide & Splash is a must), I would definitely recommend staying at Cascade.

If you do not care to be outside of the city with very few services within 10-15 min walking distance then the Cascade resort shall prove a good choice. Couple of nice beaches and the grottoes around the corner as well as the fine pools of the resort shall keep the family busy. Good service from the front desk staff and bar, bit bored and dull in the restaurant. The apartments located 2 mins from the hotel building should prove a good option for a family with kids.

Room Tip: Appartments which sleeps 6 are on the upper floor of the villas with large balconies and good views...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

My husband and I stayed in the Cascade Resort last week, for 7 nights and while we didn't have any MAJOR issues, we felt that the hotel is still not quite at the five star level that we would have experienced in other five star reports in the Algarve/Canaries etc.
Overall, the staff were as helpful as they could be. The girl who checked us in on reception, Jessica, was most helpful and the welcome drink of your choice upon arrival was a nice touch...as most hotels will just offer you a glass of sparkling wine. We were given the drinks menu and told to select whatever we wanted, which was a nice change.
Our room was lovely, very clean, spacious and I couldn't fault the housekeeping in any way. The little mini dessert every evening on turn-down was also a nice touch - normally most hotels will just drop a chocolate on the bedside locker, so again this was a plus-point.
My husband was delighted to see the driving range at the back of the hotel with both putting and chipping greens, but as he had not brought his clubs with him, he was slightly disappointed. When he went to reception to enquire as to where he could hire clubs none of the reception staff were able to assist him in any way, which we found most unsual, given that the Algarve is so well renowned for it's golfing holidays. He managed to find a local spot online and arranged it himself, but I think the hotel should really have some sort of arrangement with a local golf-hire company, given they have a driving range on site.
Another small issue we had was with the hotel wi-fi, it was very unreliable and when you did manage to connect to it, extremely slow. While this is only something very small, it's standard for a five star hotel to have decent wi-fi coverage.
The one other issue that my husband and I wanted to raise was around the fruit at breakfast. One morning, both of us had taken an apple back to our table to have with our breakfast. However, neither of us actually got around to eating the apple at the breakfast table, so we said we'd take it back to the room and maybe eat it later in the day. We were stopped on the way out of the restaurant by one of the waiting staff (a girl, who's name we didn't catch) and told that the fruit could not be taken from the restaurant to our room and was to be eaten in the dining area only. I have never seen/heard of this in a five star hotel before and was surprised to see that she was stopping us from taking an apple each (probably costing 30 cent each!?) to our rooms. Should we have put it back in the bowl, for someone else to eat.....!?!?
The hotel spa was quite a nice experience. Both my husband and I had massages and they were good. We only ate from the bar menu so can't comment on the Moods or Senses restaurants, but the Club sandwich from the bar menu was top notch, very tasty.
I would recommend the hotel to family/friends but I dont think I'd go back to Lagos, as I wasn't overly impressed with it as a destination. I would much rather Vilamoura or some of the other Algarve towns/areas.

Room Tip: Pick a pool view room.

This 83-room resort 80km west of Faro has a lot of potential: it could be the really classy, medium-sized hotel that this stretch of the Algarve needs. The cliff top setting, close to the Ponta da Piedade beaches and rock formations, and away from busy, built-up Lagos, is a winner. It’s quiet, tranquil even (the surrounding villa complex is almost deserted.) Rooms are good, with lovely terraces (make sure you get the sea/pool view, not the sea/unfinished apartment blocks view), as is housekeeping. The pool area, mercifully music-free, is lovely to sit round, and the huge pool a pleasure to swim in. But the management needs to do some managing. Every day saw another inconvenience, ranging from mild to seriously irritating. On our first morning, we had a ten-minute queue for a table at breakfast. Car keys were mislaid. A wine tasting was mysteriously cancelled (‘There is problem’), though when it did take place it was very generous. We were told we were checking out five days before we were due to do so. Room service would turn up with meals we hadn’t ordered. The lunchtime service at the more casual restaurant, Moods, (a charmless room) slowed gradually to a stop (nearly an hour to get a sandwich…and a waitress who said ‘I’m too new to take your order.’ They’d also ‘run out’ of pizzas). The food itself is fine, but the portions are meager (although strangely, the breakfast buffet is lavish). The posher restaurant, Senses, its walls decorated with the chef’s slightly dodgy surrealist paintings, feels a little fussy, though ocean views make it a nice room to sit in. The well-equipped gym, set opposite the hotel in a Ballard-esque, otherwise empty block of retail units, is open only at inconvenient times (8.30 – 12.30 and 6.30-7.30pm). The hotel has been destabilized by staff upheavals, though several of the remaining waiters/front desk staff are excellent and try really hard. There is a general air of cost-cutting which is perhaps understandable given the dismal Portuguese economy. If you can get a deal (and there are plenty available) and eat out often (or, as we did, make your own lunches) Cascade is an attractive option. However, right now, the resort should be re-categorised as a four star.

- Eat at O Camilo overlooking nearby Camilo beach. Good fish and wine list, great views.
- The tolls on the A22 need the mind of a slightly deluded bureaucrat and a 1st-class degree in Transport Logistics and Urban Planning to understand
