“Best place for sardines”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

This place, very far from the beaten track, is a great spot to get as many nice and super tasty grilled sardines at very popular price. The service is ok, don't expect any frill, and the rest of the food good. Low key in terms of interior design. It is a great place I believe for a group of people or if you want to try something very local and not touristy. I enjoyed the food and the experience.

“A real find. Best Sardines Ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

Escondidinho restaurant was recommended by our taxi driver. We asked for somewhere traditional Portugese for our lunch. It is not easy to find but is well worth the effort. Outside is some fairly basic bench seating, with further seatig inside. We chose fish and prawn kebabs to share plus sardines. Our plates were then filled with the freshest, fantasitcally cooked sardines we have even had. The sardines came with salad and potatoes and the sardines came until you said no more. We must have had at least 10 each.. The outside seating made for a good atmosphere and the restaurant seemed popular with the locals. Well worth a vist for the sardines.

“Sardines all the way!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

Escondidinho is Portugeuse for "hideway". Consequently this restaurant is not easy to find but is well worth the effort. We sat outside on some fairly basic bench seating and were asked if we wanted to see menu or to have sardines. My wife and I opted for sardines - Filipe on the grill immediately filled our plate with sardines, He would have continued to do so all night if I hadn't politely refused after having around 20. The sardines came with salad and potatoes and we had 3 small carafes of very drinkable white wine. Unfortunately we weren't quite up to the challenge of eating 40 which would have made our meal free. However we paid less than 35 Euros which was more than reasonable. The outside seating made for a good atmosphere and we met lots of people. The place seems very popular with the locals. even the presence of some L****s Utd fans couldn't spoil it.

“Amazing experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

This little known fish restaurant is a gem!! Had lunch here on 3 occassions. The fish is so fresh and cooked perfectly, the sardines are legendary!! The owner and his family really look after you and the prices are very fair.

“Local proprietor, local food and realistic prices.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

This is a small restaurant run by a local former fishing family. It is also much used by locals. Best to book, and we were asked to come by 8.30 as there is a risk the fresh fish will sell out. Choose your fish at the door, a 300 gram portion from a selection of perhaps 5 or 6 species, and the rest follows. We had a smoked mackerel starter with a muscat wine (?) and I had a cheese desert. Wine limited but ok, fish outstanding and my wife had veal cutlets which she really enjoyed and were frsh cooked alongside the fish. All in all a good evening, but do not expect the niceties. It is not the environment for fine dining, but happily does not pretend to be. Just good ingredients well prepared.
