“Best Cataplina I ever had”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2011

I was in Faro for 2 days and looking for some authentic portuguese food, one of the local friend suggested me this place. I went with one of my friend there; I loved the ambience and the atmosphere. Cataplina was served with fried potatoes and salad. I also had a carrot and ginger salad with the bread and olives. Tha was awesome, It was a worth visit.

“Very nice Fado every Friday. Food is reasonable.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2011

The food was served with little care. I recommend the goatling - if you have a very good karma ;-). All we ate, also the Dorada were a little too salty. What was looking very intersting was the fish-shashlik. BUT THE FADO GREAT! (every friday)

“Authentic portugese food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2010

The food here was very tasty, some of it very reasonable and some on the pricey side. We enjoyed everything we had. Most of the servers were very helpful and patient with our questions. We went there on two occasions and both times there were large groups of teens which was fine but kind of detracted from the atmosphere. It was very clearly a family restaurant though which was nice.

“Nice Location if you sit outside, but in a restaurant it's all about the food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2010

We went eating there as you can sit outside at a nice little place, the waiters looked fine and the prices were relatively high, but not so high as in the most other restaurants often frequented by tourists in nearby streets. Me and my wife thought that it might not be a good idea eating where no other portuguese people or tourists were, but we thought that it will be fine for the price and the location is a big decoy.
First surprise, no prices for drinks in the bill of fare or a description, what drinks, sorts of beer and wine the restaurant has to offer. The have just a few sorts of wine and beer and it is very expensive for a portuguese restaurant. 2 Euros a beer and I think like 13 for a cheap wine. For example, in Porto three days earlier I paid like 1.40 for a beer, 12 Euro for swordfish with side-dish and entrée and 7,50 for a cheap bottle of wine, 11 for a real good one in a small restaurant at the douro river where alot of restaurants for tourists are.
I got a pizza margharita and my wife some seafruits. Then the big surprise. The dish of my wife looked very fine, but when I saw my pizza, I instantly suspected that the cook never made a real one.
First bite and it got even worse. Impossible that the cook ever tasted a good pizza, uses a standard basic recipe, tastes his own pizza or alone has an oven capable of baking pizza. The cheese was absolutely flavorless and I think it was perhaps artificial cheese often used in snack bars or just the cheapest they could get.
Same thing with the tomatosauce. Absolutely flavorless. I can't even tell whether it was a packet sauce or flavorless pellati without any salt, pepper, garlic, spices.
But the worst was the dough. There was certainly no salt in it but alot of yeast. The texture was like it normally is, when you try to make pizza with thick dough in an oven not hot enough with a standard dough recipe, without salt and other adaptions. The dough was not ready, the cheese over the top.
I do not exaggerate and I never really expected much of a restaurant for tourists in this location, but this retaurants pizza is unacceptable.
My wifes seafruits were flavorless too, what you certainly do not expect for the price (which was not low for this dish) and in faro ,where all should be fresh due to the nearby sea.
The waiters were not unfriendly but not friendly at all. They had fun working, made jokes to one another and in consequence were sometimes unaware of customers needs.
We sat there 40 minutes and when we complained a waitor brought the reclamationbook. After we did this and customers saw it two more couples complained with which we talked afterwards. They had the same impression we had. The cook don't know how to cook. and he never heard about spices, salt, pepper or bakery times. Nobody tastes the food before the customer gets it. The two other couples had seafood dishes and grilled fish. Flavorless and cooked to long. So it's not just the pizza or the italian food.
My advice. Don't go there, just as it has prices a little lower than restaurants nearby and a really nice location. Go some hundred meters northwest. There are portuguese restaurants much cheaper and really good, but, sometimes without bill of fare in english, french, italian, spanish, german and with waitors which doesn't speak fluently english.
Or try it in more expensive restaurants nearby where you directly can see the food is fresh. There are plenty of it and it is worth the 3-4 euros more. Wine and beer is often even cheaper there.

“Very local flavor with fado on Fridays!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2010

I went to Centenario on a Friday for dinner. There I found a lively local crowd and delicious local fare. I and my friends had seafood (the cod in olive oil was very nice). Local amateur (and some national professional!) fado singers performed for the diners (my local friends say this is typical for Fridays). No cover! All very spontaneous. Friendly casual atmosphere and good service.
