“Hotel ok but think carefully”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Can-not fault rooms food or staff
but the hotel is situated about 1.1/2 miles from carvoeiro
and it's down hill to the village
so if you have any difficulty with your walking think carefully
and village only takes about 1/2 hour to walk round

Room Tip: must be sea view

We have just arrived home after a week's all inclusive stay at the hotel. Our impression of the place is that it is very good and well worth a visit.

The room was spacious and comfortable and the grounds were very nice to relax in with just a short walk to a beautiful beach.

The food and drink were also excellent and offered a good selection on a daily basis ranging from roasts to traditional Portuguese fish dishes. The staff were great too and I found them all to be very engaging from the manager whom I had a chat to, through to the young trainee waitress. The real diamond though is Walter- a really efficient guy who works in the restaurant. He is a real gentleman who takes a genuine interest in the people he serves and is a fountain of knowledge on anything from Portuguese history through to local food. Hotel Baia Cristal- you should make this guy restaurant manager!

The evening entertainment acts were great and we were really surprised at the quality of these musicians, especially Rudi a German violinist, guitarist Isso Do Ars and the guitar playing guy with a beard who plays a lot of Gipsy Kings tracks.

Carvoeiro is a beautiful town and our stay was really enhanced by the hotel. My only couple of gripes would be that the kiosk was closed as it was a 10 minute walk to buy a paper. There was also some noisy drilling next to the pool for 20 minutes one morning. The manager of his own accord however came out and was very apologetic. However I expected very minor things like this in the third week of October- you cannot keep a kiosk open in a quiet period and maintenance work out of season is necessary.

Thank you to all of the staff and management- we had the best holiday of our lives.

HOLIDAY ON HALF BOARD SEP/OCT 2014. HOTEL CLEAN AND IN GOOD LOCATION, reception staff do not promote a cheerful outlook. Our 4th stay at this hotel but revisits have gone unnoticed. Seen management passing through hotel but do not make eye contact with guests or enquire if enjoying holiday. On entering restaurant for evening meal not greeted by any staff and room numbers not checked guests left to find an empty table except for German Coach Party members who had no problem as about 70 per cent of tables were reserved for them. Told to wait In bar or return later. Waited in bar and saw other guests going to the restaurant and not returning so they were obviously provided with a table. On returning to restaurant we were told again that there was no table available. This is unfair as we are paying customers as well. It appeared that the restaurant was understaffed and we had to chase round for cutlery.
Please buy some more teaspoons. The food was varied and enjoyable but the chaos made our dining experience a stressful experience.

Room Tip: Ask fir a seaview room on fourth floor. There are suites available with 2 bedrooms wtih good views...

Just back from a great stay at Baia Cristal, myself and 3 friends on a golfing break.

Theres no doubt that the hotel needs a little updating here and there, however i dont really see this as a problem and found the general surroundings to be very relaxing.

The main requirements of our break were very well met by the hotel.

The food was plentiful, well presented and it wasnt difficult to find something tasty each day, our all inclusive package proved to be very good value.

The rooms were clean and spacious and had a small fridge.

The staff were overall very friendly / obliging and pointed us in the right direction several times during our stay.

There was light entertainment each night which was easy and relaxing, however of particular note was the Friday Nite Bar B Q and exhibition of local dancers which was marvellous, really enjoyed it. I appreciate this weekly event takes a lot of organising but another one per week would be even better.

The Hotel is situated approx 15 minute walk above Carvoeiro (lovely little town), its an easy walk down but uphill all the way back.

Overall we had a great stay at Baia Cristal and are really looking forward to going back next year.

Thank you.

My friend and I were moved here from the sister hotel as we wanted a balcony that we could both sit on at the same time!!! We were led to believe that we were being upgraded to a "superior suite" Ha! Ha! Ha!, The apartment was badly in need of refurbishment, it seemed to us as if this block of "superior suites" were the forgotten part of the hotel. Bed linen was not changed for 8 days and then only because we complained. Towels were not changed for three days, again only after having to visit reception again, the front of the drawers fell off. The balcony was not swept during our stay and the inlaid carpet in the bedroom has not seen a hoover in a very long time!! A truly rude and arrogant waiter at dinner service, which again forced another visit to reception. First time in the pool was the last time as it was not clean, the tiles around the water line were slimy and scummy surface water in the corner. Some umbrellas were tied to the base, the reason for this soon became apparent when our umbrella lifted up in the wind and one of the spikes speared my leg, even after bringing this to the attention of the management nothing was done, this could severely injure a small child. The service at the pool bar was sporadic, be prepared for a long wait at times! On a whole the food was edible, perhaps not 4 star but there was always something to eat. It is only a 15 minute walk into town where you are spoiled with the choice of lovely restaurants and free live music in the centre at the beach. We were perhaps a but unlucky but this was the worst holiday in ten years and we will not be returning to this hotel, the sister hotel or Portugal.

Room Tip: Don't book a "Superior Suite"

Returned from our one week holiday from Hotel Cristal. The Hotel was not large and had more of a villa feel.

Our room 107 , had a lovely sea view on the ground floor. Which I would highly recommend the extra payment , very chilled, quite with a garden area. Rooms are clean and basic.
However had a broken shower holder, so had to hold the attachment to shower.

The hotel is run on Skelton staff and most try there best. The ones that do not will be obvious. The reception area are very helpful at all times,. Also the bar staff, so my partner says. The restaurants are awful, with the exception of one older man , very good English, chatted away and was happy all the time. Did not like ABBA music. Maintenance men are minimal.

The food /restaurant

We went half board/ the food is ok!! There is nothing you would not eat, the choice is minimum basic and the same every day, but edible. The exception was a one day evening BBQ by the pool and entertainment. Which was very well organised with great food.
Tip do not do all inclusive, drinks in Portugal are cheap and snacks seemed not as a all inclusive holiday from a observers point off view and comments from other guests.

We went to the beach every day, but I believe they have aerobics twice a week, and some singers/ light entertainment every night outside.

Restaurants/ town

We went half board, this was not needed there are many restaurant and a vibrant town square with bars, not lively banging music, chillaxed for family's and couples. Tip you need to book in advance for these restaurants they get busy , you will wait a long time if you don't. We had one night out for food, fabulous.

The is a close beach near to the Hotel. Turn right out of the hotel for a short walk, you will see some steps to the right, down to the beach a large cove with restaurant and toilets. The tide comes in quickly and you will move up the beach fairly quickly in the afternoon.

We done a costal walk to the next beach in the morning amazing views, took one hour. Says medium walk, but was difficult , you will need trainers and not for young children. We are walkers anyway, so ok for us. Lovely beach , small cove , so was very hot sun baked beach. Walked the road back took 20 mins, much hotter with tarmac and sun. Walked past some lovely looking restaurants again.

We got a taxi to Mariha beach 12 euros there and 10 back . Great photos and good rock climbing for photos ,not a great beach though. Your kids wet shoes would be perfect for this.

Recommended to do the boat trip to see the caves ,amazing!!!
Spar shop is near to the beach , off track a bit just and up a hill, has everything
you would need and cheapish.

Lovely resort, very quite suited to couples or familys with young children.
The Hotel is more a 3 star it could be a 4 with more effort and staff. Two things that really bugged me and my partner.

The cleaning of the floor tiles around the hotel and in the restaurant in the corner and edges are so so dirty , it never gets done .
The windows to the restaurant are filthy beyond belief . This hotel is ok nothing special. But does have a excellent location.

For two weeks you need a car to explore.

Hope this helps

Room Tip: Get a sea view.

Booked this hotel as part of a British Airways package. Room was fine, bed was a little hard but all in all clean and fine. Flush on toilet broke and they fixed it within an hour. I was on half board, and wished I hadn't bothered - the food was not good. Breakfast was cold & greasy (I gave up after the 2nd day) - no fruit and sugary juice...Dinner was like cafeteria / hospital food - not a large selection and not very tasty. Completely uninspiring. Once stuff runs out, they don't really replace it either so if you don't go straight when it starts, there's not a lot to choose from. No local dishes which is disappointing. All meat / fish covered with some sort of gravy to hide flavour. Even half board, things like soft drinks or water with dinner was charged. Even though they had live music most nights I didn't hear it from my room, however on the Saturday there was some sort of club / party happening and music didn't stop til 2 am... I thought the hotel had wifi, it does but only in the lobby (best spot is the sofa opposite the reception desk), and it's €3 for an hour - kind of a cop out. Tried to book a massage with the front desk - the guy had the book which had no appointments in it, told me to ask the girl in the spa the next morning - went down and the same book was full, the girl had to call in someone to come in to accommodate me (very nice of her) but would have been better if the front desk people had just booked the appointment the night before. It wasn't a bad stay all in all but I wouldn't be chomping at the bit to come back.
