“Gorgeous hotel complex”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

We stayed in a deluxe apartment that was actually a house with the ability to sleep 6 people. Two bedrooms both en suite and a sofa bed in the lounge area. Fully equipped kitchen with good quality crockery and glassware. Lovely aspect over the gardens with a pond area and singing frogs. Sea view off the balcony. We stayed on the bed and breakfast rate and it was excellent value and good choice of breakfast with fresh eggs and bacon available most mornings to order if required. Hotel Compex very quiet when we stayed and it is quite out of the main area and away from the beach . A hire car is a must as there really is nothing around. If you like peace and quiet and good quality accomodation then this is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: Deluxe apartment option provides the house we had to stay in.

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights on an all inclusive deal.
We were both very impressed with the size of the room. Which was more like a villa with a lounge, dining area and kitchen downstairs and a very large double bedroom upstairs with en suite and walking wardrobe.

The whole place was very clean and tidy and all the staff were very helpful.

The only downside was a dog that barked continuously one night & most of the day. I do think this was a one off though and by the next night it was pretty quiet.

There was a nice indoor pool & Jacuzzi which were nice and clean and a well equipped gym.
The outdoor pool also looked nice but in December it was a bit cold to try!! Although the weather was still good enough for shorts and t-shirt.

The food for every meal was delicious. The breakfast was buffet and was always very well stocked. Lunch and dinner were both a la carte with a very good variety of meals to choose from.
The drinks included good beer & wine & many spirits.

There is a good chance we will return there again for a short break this year.

Myself and partner stayed for 7 nights at this hotel over Xmas. We found the staff very friendly and attentive especially Ana the waitress. The deluxe suite we had was more than what we expected! Duplex apartment, Ground floor: lovely large lounge/dining room with large flat screen TV , AC/heating, modern kitchen (even had washing machine!), AC/heating, bathroom, terrace with furniture. First Floor: Two bedrooms,(one locked), King size bed (rather hard mattress and pillows though), seperate dressing area with two large wardrobes, lovely large modern bathroom with walk in shower and bath, AC/heating, balconly with furniture. Cleaned daily. Fresh towels every day. Best holiday accomodation we have stayed in!

The restaurant and bar were small but adequate. The food was very good along with the Rose wine! Buffet Breakfast, waitress service lunch and dinner (a la carte). Only gripe we have was on Christmas Day evening very noisy people in bar (obvious too much to drink) then unfortunately for us they came into the restaurant and they were just as loud and noisy. Perhaps the staff could have asked them to keep the noise down?

The Spa was small with a gym, swimming pool, jacuzzi, turkish bath and steam room. We used all the facilities a few times apart from the gym and found them great. (if you use the indoor pool and jacuzzi you must wear a bathing hat). )Towels could be collected from the spa or reception)

The only downside was the hotel was very remote, we were informed by the receptionist that it was a half an hour walk into Carvoeiro town but it took us over an hour and returned back to the hotel in a taxi (too far and uphill on way back). We had arranged an Algarve Historical trip which cost us 32 euros each, not worth the money! Collected at 8.30am from hotel, took us to four places, then didnt get back until after 7.00pm. We ended up hiring a car and went off sightseeing ourselves, this is a better option that the excursions! I would say you would need a car if you don't want to stay in the complex.

We get the impression this hotel and spa complex which consisted of duplex apartments, villas with outside pools and bungalows could have originally been built as private dwellings to sell but perhaps because of the credit crunch wouldn't sell therefore turned into a hotel and spa??

My partner and I just came back from this resort and it was more than we could have asked for. The greeting as we came in was great - it was quite late so they let us know when the restaurant was closing so that we could have dinner and showed us to our suite.

Firstly, the suite was absolutely amazing. I do not think that the pictures give it justice! The dining area and lounge are open plan with the kitchen and downstairs toilet attached which made it all feel very spacious. The stairs round up to the two bedrooms, both with on suite bathrooms (the master had a shower and a bath). Both rooms were a lovely size and the master bedroom even had a small walk-in-wardrobe which was a nice surprise!

The closest little town is Carvoeiro which was absolutely stunning, with some lovely bars, cafes and restaurants and cute little boutique shops for those who like to shop! We rented a car for the week so had no problems getting around, however we also rented a scooter which proved to be a great way of getting from town to town quickly as well as being able to see the sights in a different way.

We decided to go in January so that it was quite and peaceful which is just what we got. We booked treatments in the spa - a spa manicure (which was nice however the paint came off almost instantly) and a couples massage (which was really lovely). The general indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room where great, however I think if more people had been at the resort it could have become a little over crowded. We did not use the outdoor pool as it was too cold at this time of year so that may have made a difference. The receptionists were very helpful with anything that we needed and by the end of our stay we definitely didn't want to leave!

One tip there is an Italian restaurant up the road from the resort that is awful, the food had no taste and it seemed like it had been microwaved even though they insisted that it was all 'homemade'.

We were a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids - 4 /10) who booked a last minute holiday here. We had a family suite, which is basically a nice villa with large living hall, dining room, fully equipped kitchen (microwave, oven, hob, dishwasher etc), 2 good sized bedrooms & 3 bathrooms. There were 3 TV's and AC in living rooms and bedrooms. First of all the accommodation was furnished to a good standard and was very clean. The cleaners come in daily to tidy up the place, remove rubbish etc. The beds and pillows were quite comfortable and when I needed extra duvet they brought it quickly with no problems.

We had taken a B&B package, but in hindsight with how well equipped the kitchen was self-catering would have been fine. The breakfast I would say was standard what you get across most decent hotels in Europe - a selection of bread, jams, spreads, fruit, eggs, some hot items, cold cuts, cheeses etc etc.. We did find that after a few days we got a bit bored of having the same breakfast every day, though there was nothing wrong with the breakfast. Some variation in items offered might be a good idea for the management to consider.

We didn't eat in the restaurant except once and it was ok. Nothing great, but also not so bad. Hence won't comment on the lunch/dinner aspect.

There is an outdoor pool just next to the reception and restaurant, which we didn't use as it was not heated and the water was a bit cold given the time of the year. There are also 2 small tennis courts and some other sports facility.

What we used quite a few times was the indoor pool/spa. As other people have mentioned before you need to use caps to use the pool, they sell it for about €4 each, but we got our own. You can also find these cheaper in local shops. The pool is small, but there were not more than 7-10 people including us at any time so didn't feel crowded. Not sure if it will be adequate if there were lot more people. There is also a jacuzzi, steam and sauna which we enjoyed using.

Location is something which may or may not work for some people. I resort is a couple of miles from the main town and the beach didn't seem very close (we didn't try the local beach but went to Marinha beach). We had hired a car and hence didn't have any problem, but without a car the location might be a bit of an issue.

Overall we enjoyed our relaxing stay given the property was spacious, well furnished and clean. The staff were also very helpful and always smiling. Wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

Room Tip: - The TV's are flatscreen but don't have a USB input which is standard on most UK TV's...

The accommodation at the Vale de Lapa is more like a modern housing complex . All deluxe suites are houses, modern and clean . Food is a la cart with a limited menu of choice but very good quality food. Drinks are very expensive €4 for 1.5 litres of water at dinner ! Indoor facilities are excellent .. A hire car is needed to get about as the complex is somewhat isolated.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

We stayed here for a week's AI break between 20-27th December, looking for a relaxing time in a bit of sun and that is mostly what we experienced. Apart from the wet, blustery days of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we enjoyed weather warm enough to walk around in tee shirts and shorts and it doesn't get dark until after 5, making the days longer than at home this time of year.

The place itself I hesitate to call a hotel in the usual understanding of the word. Rather, the Vale da Lapa is a large complex of two story apartments, villas and a few bungalows with a separate building for the reception, bar and restaurant, in front of which are the outdoor pools and another building housing the spa. I wouldn't say it was 5 star either, due to the lack of facilities, entertainment and the size of the spa. As well as the indoor pool being small, the gym only has three machines! In good weather, this is unlikely to be a problem as you will want to be outside. However, for a place that advertises itself as a resort and spa, there just isn't enough going on to merit the description. Similarly with the entertainment of which there was none whatsoever during our stay and despite the fact the receptionist at check-in told us there was going to be a big party! There was a lovely Christmas Eve dinner but no party as such! It would seem that during the summer, there is entertainment outside, where there is room for it but the bar and restaurant area is so small, there is just no space for it inside. It's difficult to socialise with other guests because of this as well but was better when it was warm enough to sit outside. If you want total piece, this will not be a problem, but a 5 star resort should be offering a choice, at least.

What does merit 5 stars is the quality of the food which, unusually for an AI, is only a buffet at breakfast, with lunch and dinner being freshly cooked to order from the menu. Downside, these menus never vary so if you are staying more than a week, I think you would get fed up of it. The village is a brisk 35 minutes walk away and there aren't that many restaurants nearby, with the complex being in a mostly residential area. There are options for sc, bnb and half board if you prefer with a few local supermakets to stock up from. The Portugese house wine was of a good standard, especially the rose, and there was the usual range of spirits and soft drinks as well as a cocktail of the day included in the AI package. All in all, the package, booked through Low Cost Holidays, was excellent value.

5 stars also to the lovely staff, who were very friendly as well as efficient, although the staff on duty in the bar on Christmas Day could have dealt better with the noisy drunks who were shouting and swearing at the top of their voices, oblivious to any offence they might be causing or how intimidating this kind of behaviour can be to others. There were only a few of them but in such a small bar, it was impossible to ignore. The staff were too tolerant and kept recharging their glasses. We have been on a few AI holidays and this was the first time we have experienced this behaviour.

To end on a positive note, the accommodation itself is excellent. We had a ' deluxe room ' which is the smallest you can get but which is the afore-mentioned two story apartment! Downstairs has a very spacious lounge with a huge tv/dvd player, a fully equipped kitchen and toilet. Upstairs has two bedrooms. The second was locked but I am informed has two single beds! The main bedroom is very spacious with another tv, partially seperate dressing area with two wardrobes, and an ensuite bathroom with bath and walk in shower.

Overall, this was an enjoyable, if slightly surreal, experience due to the layout and type of accommodation which looks more like a time share rather than a hotel. It's not a time share but you can buy a property although it would appear not many are privately owned. For the relaxation, food and wine and staff, I would certainbly consider returning, depending on the price.

Room Tip: We had 'room' no 5 which overlooked the pool and restaurant area so we didn't have far t...
