“Good Hotel Loved Carvoeiro”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2008

I enjoyed my stay at the Mirachoro Praia, but I would say there is definitely room for improvement. The room was big enough with a king size bed, loads of storage, a fridge & a roomy balcony. The bathroom was a good size too and the shower was great, very powerful and hot. The bed was made and fresh towels every day, however some of the towels were well past their best with holes and fraying in some. The stairs leading from the room out to the pool/ courtyard were all in need of sweeping and washing, not done during our 2 weeks... The reception & bar are done in amazing bright colours, I really liked the decor. The restaurant was an experience and I was glad we were b&b only. 1 waiter was lovely & helpful, the other (taller of the 2) was dreadful, so rude. Breakfast itself was fine, all the usual stuff. Just be prepared the 1st day or 2 can be stressful in the scramble for bowls and spoons (both in short supply). The pool was great, but the sun loungers were really saggy and need to be replaced, some people had towels out as early as 7am!! Overall the staff were very helpful and friendly and we really felt we got value for money.

  • Liked — The pool, the location
  • Disliked — The tall waiter who was so rude to everone

I returned from Mirachoro Praia today, overall it was a brilliant holiday and good value. I don't believe, however that this hotel is 4 star, i've experienced better 3 star hotels. The pool area is lovely, plenty of space and nice shaded areas. The rooms were clean however one morning the cleaners arrived quite early it was slightly inconvenient. Also although the rooms were kept clean, the stairways and corridors were quite dirty, however that doesn't spoil a holiday. One morning we had arranged to go on an excursion that left at 8.30, the breakfast is meant to start at 8 however was not opened until 8.15 and even then was not fully prepared. There wasnt a large variety of food, however chips and salad was provided every night for more fussy eaters.
The hill to the beach was quite steep and the pavements could be quite slippery so i wouldnt advise this hotel to wheelchair users or people with walking difficulties.

Arrived at around 10pm and was kindly given a meal as the restaurant was closed. I requested a room away from lifts/stairwells and they gave me exactly what I wanted. So far,so good.

The breakfasts were perfectly adequate, though (as with most hotels), juices, tea & coffee not brilliant.

Given that the hotel has quite a large outside area, you could really exploit the space, maybe with a shaded area, near the doors to the bar, a little more lawn around the pool etc.... The one thing which disappointed me was the lack of cleaning on the pool terraces and bits of rubbish lying around. The indoor pool was a bit dark and unwelcoming, so did'nt use it. Outdoor pool could have done with a paint and the children's pool was only 1/2 full-poor kids!!!! The one thing which bothered me was there was quite a few "older" ladies (should know better), who were topless around the pool. It's okay for the beach but not in a family hotel.

The bar prices were quite steep, 3 Euros for a Sprite!!! 1/2 litre of house wine 7.5 Euros. Take my advice and go to the Cafe Fino (right out of the hotel), or another nice bar (left, up the hill). A lovely restaurant first left up the hill, which does lovely sardines and piri piri chicken.

Food in the evening, again, was adequate. Usually 2 meat and 1 fish. Vegetables a bit overcooked but lovely fresh salad available. I did actually like the decor in the restaurant/bar and public areas, although, it did remind me more of Morocco.

Carvoeiro is pretty but very crowded. Prices in the Algarve are getting similar to the UK now so I would'nt visit this region again.

  • Liked — The comfortable bed.
  • Disliked — Outside areas.

We have just returned today from the Mirachora Praia Hotel having had a really good holiday. We stayed for 14 nights. The hotel is probably not a 4* hotel, don't get me wrong we had a fab time, the reception staff were very helpful, the rooms were quite spacious, the water at shower and bath time was always hot, the pool was a comfortable area (although cold at first!!), but I have to say that although the food was always very tasty it was difficult most of the time at breakfast if you go down at about 9am, there seems to be a shortage of cutlery and cups and saucers, we also did find one male member of staff in the dining room very impatient and quite rude when a problem arose (his attitude was, my name is on my badge if you want to complain, complain!) this attitude would certainly not be acceptable in England, but is not a reflection we found of other members of staff. If you are going half board, the food in the evening, again was very flavoursome, but monotonous.

The rooms were cleaned every day, towels changed, but I have to say that after 10 days I did have to ask to have the sheets on the bed changed!!. The air conditioning in the rooms is very effective and it was nice to have a fridge to keep water etc cool in. I would advise anyone staying at this hotel to take their own travel hair dryer, there is one in the bathroom but not very effective.

All in all we had a good holiday, fab weather which makes all the difference - Visit Bradys Bar whilst there, very friendly and good atmosphere.

  • Liked — Hot water and comfortable bedrooms
  • Disliked — Change of bed linen infrequent

Stayed at the Mirachoro Praia in Carvoeiro from the 8th June until the 12th June. The hotel was spotlessly clean, rooms were of a good standard and size (327)large balcony and good view of the pool area and the ocean.
Breakfast was served from 08.00 until 10.30 and consisted of good selection of bread and croissants, cereals, scrambled and boiled eggs, bacon, cold meats, fruit and yogurts plus a selection of fruit juices(not very good) and tea and coffee.Overall the breakfasts were well above average.
Did not try any other food at the hotel as Carvoiera has so many good restaurants. For lunch,Cafe Fino has a good selection of sandwiches, toasties, salads, cakes, coffees and ice cream and is only 2 minutes from the hotel.
In the evening we tried The Villa Medici,Italian, straight across from the hotel, very good.
Ele and Ella,European/Portuguese.This is on the left hand side of the road going out of town(one way system). This was some of the best food we had tasted abroad.Try the Black Pig and Meditteranean Halibut.

Pool and pool area was clean with plenty of sunloungers. In the height of the season I think you would have to get down early to get a bed.

I would certainly recommend Carvoeiro and the Mirachoro.

  • Liked — The location,quietness and cleanliness
  • Disliked — The pool bar was unfinished

This hotel is graded officially as a 4 star. I think it would struggle to get a 3 star rating at max. I will write the revue in 3 parts.
1, The Hotel.
The hotel sits at the top of a hill coming out of Cavoeiro. As it relies on the older clientele this can be quite a trek as most of the time you are walking up the road rather than the pavement which is full of eating places and tourist type shops, as the roads are quite narrow and drivers have little or no regard for people on foot. The initial appearance seems quite good, the reception is a bit over the top on its colour scheme but it doesn't come over as garish. The reception staff are welcoming ( depending on what time of day you arrive.) and will try and assist you with any enquiries. The hotel is 'u shaped' and our room was on the far corner of the hotel, to access meant dragging our cases the full length and breadth of the hotel, only to be told we could use the fire exits to access the dining room a matter of 20 feet from our room !but onlty after we had moved in. The rooms are ok but look a bit basic for a 4 star hotel. An en suite bathroom with bath , shower , bidet and hand basin, the bedroom has a double bed which was the hardest I have ever slept on, a balcony which although we requested a sea view doesn't have one as the beach is in the town square.Maid service is daily but the standard varies greatly, the beds are made up every day and the towels changed but some areas regarding cleaning vary. There is a Tv with sky but it only shows news in english and the other channels show respective countries news programmes. It needs either a movie and or a music channel.
2. Food.
We went half board. The breakfast is a joke very much 'continental' style but with a half hearted attempt to cater for the english palate. It was very rarely hot, always seemed to run out.The toaster took an eternity and the coffee machine cannot keep up with the requirements for the hotel. Cutlery is always short (teaspoons especially) the fruit juice machine is squash ( in a country that grows fresh oranges !) the staff seemed to consist of two each morning who try to cover all aspects of the restaurant, from restocking to clearing away. It didn't improve at night for the evening meal either .How many ways can you make a stew? the menu on display every night didn't even relate to some of the choices, the soup was the same colour every night (yellow) with different vegetables thrown in and renamed, pea, onion, asparagus etc. it became a joke after 2 weeks. In the 2 weeks we were there we saw fresh potatoes 3 times all the other nights it was chips ( usually cold) as was a lot of the food too. The waiters/ barman take drinks orders at extortinate prices, but there are no facilities for an after dinner coffee unless you pay for it! Definately not 4 star cuisine more back street cafe.
3. Facilities.
Occasional entrertainment? yes a guitarist came once a week who sang terribly but played some fairly decent music, That is it. The pool looks as though it has seen better days , the sun loungers are well overdue a change as they sag everywhere, Whilst we were there they were decorating? the pool bar.which wasnt running during our stay, the indoor pool was rarely cleaned , full of sand and dirt and the lighting needs a good electrician to make it look safe, with broken lights hanging from the ceiling and the area itself was quite dark and uninviting.
All in all not a place I would reccomend to people as a 4 star hotel. For those of us that dont go out drinking, there is nothing that would make me go back there, For those that do drink the bar closes at midnight no matter what, and anyone left in the bar is told to leave by the bar staff. There are no other facilities available even the chance to get a late night coffee or tea isn't available as the rooms have no facilities to make one.

I stayed at this hotel for 1 week B&B in May 2008. The public areas are very bright and cheerful, the rooms small and neutral. Breakfast was no more than acceptable. Plenty of bread and cereal, usual hot food etc but no fresh fruit available. The area around the small pool was not always cleaned thoroughly (dirty ashtrays sometimes still around from the previous day) and there were weeds growing between the flagstones. The pool itself was cleaned daily. The reception staff were professional but not as helpful as they might have been. In all, disappointing for a hotel rated 4*. Carvoeiro itself is a nice little resort, although not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties as it is very hilly.

  • Liked — Bright and colourful public areas
  • Disliked — Lack of upkeep of pool area
