“dated but comfortable and well kept. ideal location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2009

Stayed in the Rosamar 1 complex of apartments in Amerca de pera at the end of May beginning of June. came on a package holiday with Thomas Cook/Panaroma/Sunway holidays from Ireland West Airport knock. Amerca de Pera is about 40 minutes from the Faro airport.
Our initial view was "oh god!". there was someone cooking next door and the smell wasn't great but this disappeared. the apartment is dated but very clean. There is lots of hot water but it obviously doesn't last forever; as 2 of us were in the apartment we left showers about 10 mins beftween the first and second shower. our towels were only changed once during the week but our bed was made each day; they should change the towels more often. beds were comfortable and there is a large fridge/freezer which is great. integrated cooking area in the living room but we ate out and only ever had breakfast in the apartment. TV has some english channels on it and there is a balcony which was handy for drying our non-changed towels!
the Rosamar II (2) is next door but is no way affiliated with the Rosamar I. it used to be previously. there is no pool that we saw with the Rosamar I. it seems to be only associated with the Rosamar II.
At night there are seagulls screeching so the best thing to do is pull down the shutters. beds are a little on the hard side but thats cos i am used of a soft bed.

location: the Rosamar is only 50 metres from the beach and is the same from the supermarket. everything is on the door step. you are a 5-10 min walk from the old town but its in an ideal location. beware of Amerca de pera as they currently have all the streets dug up so anyone who's mobility isn't great it might not be the best place for getting about. i think they should have the work done by this year. the beach is huge; i would think its 4-5km's in length and goes to the nearby town of Gale. the weather was gorgeous when we were there. the first 2 days we got sun beds at Rocha Palha restaurant which is great for getting cocktails and food. it is right on the beach.
the beach itself is in great condition; no litter and plenty of sunbeds. there weren't many tourists around when we were there; must be a quiet time of the year.

Out and about: there are some nice restaurants with all specialising in seafood. there is an italian restaurant near the Rosamar; out the door and to the right for 40 metres. we ate there twice and can't recommend it highly enough. we also ate at Rocha Palha which is right on the sea front. i can't remember off hand but we ate in 2/3 other places in the old town. nightlife wise there is Havana's and the Cocktail bar. there wasn't much happening besides. its not a resort for the younger people. we had a relaxing holiday so didn't do any of the sightseeing or adventure activities but there seems to be loads to do especially for families.

stayed here for two weeks and really enjoyed it. All staff were pleasant and helpful. Close to all amenities including bus stop and taxi ranks and miles of beach to explore. My husband has to go for dialysis 3 times a week (arranged for us by Irish Kidney Association at a unit in Portimao). Only drawback to the holiday is bus service between towns comes to a standstill around 19.00pm. Quite cheap to travel to the unit by bus but taxi back each time was a bit expensive. Lots to do even on my own in the evening and I felt quite safe wandering around. Admittedly the hotel is a bit quiet, no nitelife in bar but that is what we wanted. We cant wait to go back.

  • Liked — Very central location, not far to go for anything
  • Disliked — cleaning staff sometimes arrived very early-no do not disturb sign available

Rosamar 1, though a little dated, is clean, spacious and well equipped - e.g. aircon, hair-dryers, ironing board, bidet. The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient with daily cleaning service. There is a small indoor pool in the building and a separate outdoor pool across the road but they are not much used because located only 50 yards away is probably one of the best beaches in the Algarve and one that seems very popular with the portugese themselves who, by the way, are very polite and helpful. Their presence in family groups mainly, probably explains the lack of loud brash bars and discos, though there are many fine and excellent value restaurants in the resort - seafood very popular, where it is possible for a family of four to eat out (including drinks) for around Euro50. If self-catering, groceries and drink prices are only a third of the cost in Ireland.

The beach is well maintained with plenty of supervised water-sports (ask for Carlos, who when he is not running this venture, works off-season in Cork ) umbrellas and some great beach bars - check out the Palm beach, below Hotel Garbe, run by (Jokin) Joachim and Paul, two of the friendliest and most effiicient guys you could hope to meet. It has lots of variety from small cliffs at the West end, a prom and fishermans beach towards the centre, and then stretching for over 2 miles east along sand-dunes to the next resort of Gale - for those who like to stretch their legs.

Armacao de Pera itself is relatively small, though expanding fast judging by the amount of building since I was last there ten years ago. It has about three main streets of high-rise apartment/hotel buildings stretching for about one km along a pleasant prom overlooking the beach ending in a small but nice old town centre with plenty of small shops and restaurants.

It is also well located for many of the local attractions: Zoomarine, markets at Loule, hectic nightlife in Albufeira, culture in Silves.
If its a beach holiday you are after, you will not be disappointed.

stayed at the rosamar for one week, was pleasantly surprised at the size of the apartments as it was the cheapest holiday we ever got, there is a daily maid service and staff are friendly . I would highly recommend it. Make sure you visit Dom Pedros restaurant for fabulous food and most importantly for a good night out call to The Old Road Irish Bar where Aidan Joanne and Nigel will make you feel very welcome . We had the best nights there, we will be back

Nice clean apartment if a bit dated decor wise. Staff very friendly though.

The old main drag of the resort itself was bit touristy, so many apartments, so few occupied though. But the old back streets revealed some nice surprises in old fashioned greengrocers & butchers & fishmongers.

Eating out the food was great - pork & clams, piri piri, fresh swordfish/tuna/bass/bream, fishermans stew. Even the "junk food" was good quality in the resort.

Beach is glorious, clean, plenty of beds, plenty of lifeguards (especially enjoyed the one who runs the beach bar at weekend - try the mojitos - they are class, and don't forget your free melon shot when leaving).

Food is cheap in supermarkets, just remember Portugese wine is an "acquired taste" try the beer instead (Sagres or Super Bock) and remember to take some piri piri chillies home for recreating the food you enjoyed.

Nothing like Lanzarote Princess (my last review) but equally enjoyable.

Cheap but cheerful holiday for us and none the worse for it
