Just back from an excellent holiday in the sun on Portugal.

The Hotel Garbe was really excellent, great location right on the beach, nice rooms with really good firm beds and virtually silent air conditioning. The breakfasts were as good as any I have had on holiday.

Just ensure you walk down to the old part of town which is much livelier at night, although the Water Dog pub opposite the hotel offer good basic food and friendly staff and customers.

We stayed here in the week of the 12th June, found the hotel quite easily (ps avoid booking a car with Alamo, it takes ages to collect and drop off at their compound adjacent to the airport terminal) checked in and found that we had been given a non sea view room with a broken air conditioner, not a good start!

Went back to reception, they confirmed with the 'engineer' that is was broken. I then mentioned requesting a sea view room on our booking, the receptionist then got us a room twice the size of our original with a partial sea view and a large balcony. Motto: Ask or you don't get!

The hotel and rooms were all very clean, breakfast was quite good but don’t expect fresh orange juice, only watered down squash, unless you want to pay 2 Euro for a glass of fresh!! The country is awash in oranges why do they do this!

The resort is full of high-rise apartments, but once you start looking in between and under them (ground floors), you will find lots of snack bars, cafes, shops and restaurants. Most of the restaurants are aimed at the locals, as this resort is predominately for the locals, the beach is good, but the high rises make the front look a bit intimidating.

Nevertheless, for a nice quiet and relaxing place to stay with a good beach and decent food, then this is the place. We are looking at returning in September.

This hotel is in a perfect location right on the beach. The beach is not for those who cannot or are not confident swimmers. The hotel itself is quite dated but the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Make sure you pay extra for a balcony and a sea view. The food is of good quality but quite bland. There are many local resturants to tempt those with more adventerous tastes. We would use this hotel again but would stay on B&B basis. The rooms need some updating and the carpets need removing. We also had minor problems with cockroaches. The resort has more of a 'locals' feel and is not for those looking for nightlife. Perfect resort to travelling to other local towns for shopping etc as it is on a bus route if you don't want to drive. If you want a quiet, peaceful break this is good value for money.

My husband and myself stayed at the Garbe for a week in mid May.The rooms were comfortable and very clean. We rarely saw the maid but she seemed to know when you had left the room and was straight in there to clean it. The only downside was that we could have done with a fridge.
There was no mad rush in the morning for a sunbed as whatever time of day you went down to the pool there were always free sunbeds although this might be a different story in the height of summer. The hotel is right on a wide sandy and very clean beach. As there were quite a few steps this hotel wouldn't be suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Breakfast was good with a selection of cereals, bread, meats, cheese etc. My husband did try the small selection of cooked items though and wasn't impressed. We were B&B but those people we spoke to who were HB were definitely not impressed with the food in the evenings. They said it was not very hot and was greasy. There were so many nice places to eat outside the hotel and you could pay however much you wanted. Several places had tourist menus for around 10 euros perperson. We particularly liked 'A Tasca' which was a locally run restaurant in the old town and up a side street from the beach road (turn up the hill at The Miramar restaurant). The fish here was excellent. It was more expensive than the tourist menu places but definitely worth it. We ate there for 3 nights out of the 7.
The clifftop walk out to the right of the hotel was beautiful.
The only downside of the place was the high rise blocks and the building work going on in the town but as we went just to laze in the sun we never heard any noise from these areas. All in all a very pleasurable holiday.

We have recently returned from a sunny week at the Hotel Garbe where we had a lovely garden room literally a stones throw from a great sandy beach. The beach was ideal for leisurely walks with plenty of bars along the way to replenish the fluid levels. The hotel was nice with friendly staff only to pleased to help out with all sorts of queries. Opposite the hotel was a nice pub called The Waterdog run by english people where the homemade food selection was very reasonably priced and good quality. One of the nicest places we ate out was at Porters which had a great selection of dishes on their three course tourist menu with a half bottle of wine per person included in the fantastic price of 9.50 euros. There was a scrumptious cake shop across the road from the hotel that stayed open quite late each evening and was always well frequented by holidaymakers and locals. With a yummy creperie a short walk away it was not a place for the weight conscious person with no will power. All in all I would recommend this resort for almost any age group with the possible exception of teenagers who might find the nightlife lacking but for two slightly more mature folks we thought it fitted the bill perfectly and would definitely return.
