“3 visits in a year - says it all”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

We have just returned from our 3rd visit to the Holiday Inn Algarve, staying in October, July and September each time when we were in desperate need of rest and relaxation, which we got in plenty! The hotel is clean and well-appointed, despite what other reviewers have said. We have had a sea view every time in different sections of the hotel and they have always been to the same high standard. The hotel's location on the beach gave us an alternate sunbathing location when all the sunbeds were taken - how early do some people get up to put their towels out??!!! - our only gripe. We had a satisfying breakfast each morning and enjoyed delicious meals after a leisurely walk through the town. Try the back streets for cheaper but equally good food.
Thanks also to Chloe for her relaxing pedicures and friendly chats.
If you want a good hotel in a fantastic location try this one.

Room Tip: Ask fir sea view room on one of the higher floors

The Holiday Inn Algarve was booked at the last minute due to a transportation strike and our stay turned out to be one of the highlights of our Portugal trip. Without a GPS it might be difficult to find the location, as there are no signs and only dirt roads. Finally, a group of high-rise condos appeared with the Holiday Inn towering above the large sandy beach that stretched for over a mile. While the Holiday Inn was nice with moderate rates, compact rooms, modular furniture, free buffet breakfast and wifi in the public areas, the real star was the pool, beach and small community along the pedestrian zone. The sun worshipers were out in force but the beach was so long that private areas were available to obtain. There are quite a few small restaurants and businesses in the small town, Armacao de Pera. If interested in an Algarve beach resort at a moderate price, then the Holiday Inn should deserve high consideration.

Once again after reading many revues about the Holiday Inn, Armacao de Pera, we started our holiday with a sense of doubt. No need. Flight out with Jet2holidays was good. Transfer quick, and the sun shine, all a good start.
The hotel itself is at the end of a promenade and that is the first thing you see along with the large concrete apartment blocks when you arrive at the resort.
Reception staff were efficient and friendly. I had emailed ahead and requested a sea view room, which we got in the refurbished part of the hotel. The room was lovely, with a small balcony. After going for a quick look round my husband noticed a room with a terrace and small garden area, we asked if this was available and it was. We were told that it had not been refurbished but we could have it if we wanted. The room was a bit drab but the bathroom was o.k and the terrace and garden area with sunbeds outside your door more than made up for this. The beach was down a few steps to our left and the pool to our right once again down a few steps.
The restaurant is large with views out to sea. Food was varied and something for everyone. There were lots of different nationalities in the hotel and there was a very friendly atmosphere at all times. It is a quiet resort with not much for children or teenagers, but the streets come to life in the evenings with lots of restaurants and stalls selling all kinds of "unusual" items.
The drinks in the hotel bar are expensive, and the Happy Hour stops strictly at 8 p.m,
The hotel does need a bit of a face lift but when we asked about this we were told that Holiday Inn was in the process of doing this but as the hotel was fully booked well into October completion was on hold.
In conclusion, if you want a chill out holiday, plenty of sun, hotel on the beach, great beach bar selling succulent salads and amazing G and Ts, in a quiet resort this is for you.
Sangria is my "tipple" when in Portugal and Spain so when I had some in the hotel which was not quite right I mentioned this to a man Paulo Matias who turned out to be the assistant manager. He apologised, and the next evening the biggest jug of the most delicious Sangria was brought to our table with his complements.
We have stayed in lots of hotels in Europe and beyond and the Holiday Inn has the best location of them all.

Room Tip: Roo Garden room has terrace and sunbeds outside your door. Easy access to beach and pool.

I am in the hotel business and have never complained but felt compelled to this time as I don't want others to go through the same nightmare we did.
Our arrival was a clear indication of what we were about to experience. No parking available, in fact the driveway was littered with double-parked cars even blocking the main entrance to the hotel. Upon check-in at 4pm our room was not ready and we were just asked to come back in an hour. When we did return there was no apology and we were give a room in the non-renovated area on the first floor next to the elevator. This room should not be for sale and marked out of order. The minute we opened the door it smelled and very outdated and dirty. I took pictures and only wish I could upload them!
Went down immediately to complain and again no apology but was given a last option on a vacant room. Upon entering the newly renovated room, again next to the elevator, it had a damp and dirty smell to it. I took pictures of the black mold growing in the shower and the hairs all over the toilet. We were tired and didn't bother complaining but did not even take off our shoes as we were scared. We even left our luggage in the car afraid of taking something home with us. When we came back from dinner the air-conditioner did not work and a mechanic came up to look at it only to tell us that it was broken and nothing he could do, very disappointing in 35+ heat. He asked us to leave the window open which created a secondary problem being mosquitos. They quickly filled the room and we suffered numerous bites all over our body.
We did not want to spend another minute and quickly checked-out in the morning. They gave us a hard time and didn't want to refund my second night but after some debate they refunded my second night but offered NO compensation for the first night, not even a simple breakfast.
A very up-setting visit to such a beautiful area of Portugal. They should be ashamed of themselves and charging the dollars they do for a 2 star property at best.

Still angry and itchy

I stayed here using a mixture of IHG reward nights and fee paying nights. The hotel staff and their understanding of the IHG rewards scheme was slightly lacking, but they were all friendly. The restaurant isn't fantastic, but during the summer they put on a Saturday BBQ and the range of meat and fish is great for €22. The rooms are standard holiday inn style - comfy and clean. This hotel serves as a great base to hit the beach and the local town which is buzzing with restaurants, bars and amazing ice cream bars.

Stayed two nights as a precurser to our Algarve family holiday using my IHG reward points. Very impressed with the level of customer service, especially the hotel reservation staff who were able to upgrade the rooms to sea view exec as an IHG Platinum guest. The hotel is very clean and facilities are good for the age of the buiding. Despite the local tourist authority awarding 4 stars, this hotel clearly is not 4 star standard compared to Holiday Inns in the UK. Whilst we felt it was good overall, it does not meet a comparable standard with newer 4 star establishments. Facilities for teenagers could be improved, as most of the machines/pool table in the games area weren't functional. Prices in the hotel were fairly pricey compared with outside establishments. Breakfast wasn't comparable with other 4 star establishments. The bedrooms though were of a good standard with decent TVs, aircon, safe, fridge etc Bathrooms were perhaps a little tired and in need of modernisation. Balconies small and poorly appointed - very hot with aircon machinery outputting straight at you. Swiiming pool and terrace very clean and decent - biggest advantage is direct access to beach. Pera itself is a little tired and cannot compete with the more upmarket resorts in the Algarve. However, the beach is good and the hotel's location cannot be rivalled in the resort. I would recommend staying at the hotel and would return understanding the limitations.

Having just had a fantastic 10 night stay at the Holiday Inn Armacao de Pera , have returned home relaxed and very tanned . Arrived in resort at around 1pm 22nd August ,room was ready for us on arrival and what a room ! You know you're in for a good holiday when you get a nice room , with a balcony and sea view . We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and cannot fault the food choice - there is something for everyone here .Having breakfast on the sunny terrace overlooking the ocean was a plus -gets the day off to a good start . The Hotel staff were all very friendly and polite and even the housekeeping ladies spoke good English (and worked hard) .During the day , we could mainly be found on the sunbeds above the pool bar( very handy ) , and in the evenings ventured out to one of the many restaurants just a small stroll away . I would return to this hotel again -sun lovers will love it !!

Room Tip: Sea view room is a must
