“Nice but nothing special about this hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2006

Hi just back from a week long stay at the Vila Gale Nautico. I booked this hotel from the good reviews on this website and i found the cheapest deal on 'reserveahotelonline[--]'.

Ok firstly location: This hotel is situated in a quite part of the town - it is within walking distance to the gorgeous beach but more that a 5 min walk - a most of the other reviews state (but maybe i am a slow walker!) . The main part of the town is about a fifteen minute walk away. The hotel Garb is in a better location. Also we spotted the Torre Sol which again is better located but looked a bit grubby.

The Pool: This hotel has both inside and outside pool. The outside pool is huge and seemed to be clean and there was loads of sun loungers! The inside pool again seemed clean enough but there seemed to be a really dogy smell.

The hotel was very clean (the bathroom was a little grubby) and the rooms were service daily. Each hotel has a little (very little!) balcony. We didn't have a problem with noise but then we asked for a room on the lower floor without a view of the pool - i could imagine if you had a pool view that it would be much nosier as you would be nearer the restaurant and bar.

The guests are mainly Germans and English - very family orientated - there is a games room and also a little kids area just off the pool -We didn’t meet any other Irish guests.

Most of the staff seemed great the kids but there was an incident which bugged me - my son who is only five was walking by where they were setting up the evening buffet and there was a huge pile of fruit and he asked could he have an apple and was told no that it was for the dinner - I thought for god’s sake its only an apple!

We only ate breakfast at the hotel - which is included in the price- and didn’t sample any of the evening meals - the prices seemed higher than the other restaurants in the area.

This area of the Algarve is great as it is near Zoomarine, Krazyworld, Aqualand, Splash & Slide and also near the Nike World and the big shopping centre - we rented a car and it was the best decision ever - as this area is quiet and there is not that much to do. There is an underground garage which is free but we were told in the month of August it is E4.50 per day!

Now we come to the downsides of this hotel - there seemed to be an awful smell from the bathroom (similar to the one in the pool) which only appeared in the morning time and by mid afternoon disappeared - have no idea what it was from.

The price of drinks such water was crazy E2.00 - when it can be bought from supermarkets in the shopping centre for 8cent!!!

As there is no fridge in the rooms you can’t buy your own drinks and that’s probably the reason they don’t have them.

Over all I don’t think we would ever return to this hotel - mainly because there is nothing that special about it - no wow factor - it was good value for money - and a great place to stay with kids!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review and comments... in2006! (Never too late :))

Your comments help us to continue trying to exceed the expectations of our guests. And that´s why that our company had made some important renovations in the public areas and services. Vila Galé Náutico is now an All-Inclusive Hotel since 2012.

Armação de Pêra is also different and much nicer after the finishing of the construction works during many years and with the new promenade.

On behalf of Vila Galé Nautico team, we hope that we will be able to welcome you back in the future.

Kind regards

Stayed here for a week at the end of May. Very clean, spacious room. Gorgeous bathroom with a fabulous hairdryer so no need to take my own. Walls were very thin but wasn't really an issue for us though I was terrified to turn over in bed as they squeaked so much. Found the restaurant staff rather rude but everyone else in the hotel was lovely and friendly. Definately visit the Water Dog, a great English pub with superb food courtesy of Frances and Charlie, the owner, is a great guy, the nicest you could wish to meet. Pay a visit to the old town and stroll back along the beach of an evening - beautiful. Recommend hiring a car and taking a trip to Vilamoura. The marina was gorgeous as was the drive past all the golf courses. A great insight into how the other half lives.

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at Vila Gale Nautico, in the Algarve. Overall it was a fantastic holiday and by far the best that i personally have been on. This was my first time abroad and it was a great choice of hotel and fantastic location - only a 5 minute walk to the beach and 10 minute walk into the town cente.

Although we were very impressed with the hotel, there were a few things that could be improved. The staff were not as polite as we'd hoped and we also found them quite unhelpful. On several occasions we had to speak to different members of staff from around the hotel including reception, bar staff and pool staff. They proved to be extremley unhelpful and in 1 case quite rude. The main problem was the language barrier - none of the staff spoke fluent English and some didnt understand any English at all.

On our first week, we used the outdoor pool, indoor pool and jucuzzi frequently. By the second week we were there, all 3 pools were very dirty, smelly and unappealing. My boyfriend got an ear infection during that time and was prevented from going into any water for the rest of the holiday. Maybe this was due to the condition of the water or it may have been something that would have happened anyway. Either way, the pools cleanliness was not acceptable.

The rooms were extremley impressive. They were very spacious, beautifully decorated and cleaned daily by the hotel staff. Air conditioning is in every room (which is much needed!) and a balcony on every room either overlooks the pool or the main street where the sea is clearly visible.

The food was fantastic at both lunch time and in the evening (buffet style for evenings) and breakfast was good quality although it was the same things out every day. This was also buffet style. The cost of the evening meal was very expensive compared to what you pay in the town centre and also the drinks at the snack bar during the day were very expensive.

A great day out is the ZooMarine in Guia and boat trips are a MUST!

Finally, we need to say that if we were to return to the Algarve in the future, we could happily return to this hotel. But slightly wiser and much more prepared :-)

We arrived at the hotel at 12 noon and wer told we couldnt have our room until 2pm. When we eventually got our room it was one without a pool view (which we had paid for) We immediately went to reception and requested the pool view which we were given begrudgingly and also it was non smoking room although we asked for a smoking room. However we couldnt be bothered to argue and just smoked on the balcony!

HOTEL - Both pools were crystal clear, usually sunloungers were available, lots of people reserving them with towels which got annoying! Rooms were well cleaned when requested, and the hotel in general was spotless, air conditioned rooms, decent bathroom, good sized balcony. Rooms are secure. Good small gym on site, Small shop for fags, sunglasses, postcards etc, Games room, expensive bar but very nice.

Did not notice the "thin walls" at all to be honest. We had group of lads one side of us and a family the other side yet no noise bothered us.
Entertainment in the evening went on until very late (11.30/12 at night) so if u want an early night, tough! However, the entertainment was varied, all music based and a good laugh

Breakfast buffet was great. Didnt try the evening buffet but it looked promising (€14.40 with the complimentary 20% discount)

Location was super, right near the huuuge beach, busy in day but lovely about 6pm, miles of empty white sand!

Near a mini supermarket, lots of shops and a few good quality restaurants. We reccomend...'the water dog'-lovely english food, english host, value for money. booze a bit pricey. 'Raj' - Indian under the Hotel Garbe, tasty! 'Busuris' - cheap, very popular, busy, good food, cheap beer. 'Clipper' - dont go here. Many people recommended this so we tried it and werent at all impressed. Rip off, not even good food.

Overall well impressed, great holiday, felt very safe here even late at night. Hotel would suit anyone but not a lot of night life outside the hotel for clubbers and party animals.

We stayed at the Nautico for 3 weeks in April, breakfast and dinner. Everything was very good. The rooms were clean and spacious, although quite noisy, the walls are thin and you can hear everything from the hallway and next rooms. That was our only complaint and a minor one at that. The restaurant was excellent and run very efficiently. The staff were friendly and extremely good at their jobs. The food was good, although we did find by the end of our holiday that we were getting a little tired of buffets and did eat dinner at some of the local restaurants. The location was good and we were able to walk down to the old town quite easily, excellent restaurants there also. I would highly recommend this hotel and would enjoy another stay there next year.

We went for a family holiday a couple of years ago here. I must say that i am a bit biased towards Portugal cause I am only 20 years old and i have been 24 times! i absolutely LOVED the Nautic. the rooms were absolutely spotless and they have a gorgeous Nautical theme (slightly obvious!) The bar was fab, they did lovely cocktails and you could also sit outside which was gorgeous at night. The beach is literally across the road and it stretches for miles so its lovely to either lay and sunbathe or go for a nice long walk. Armacao de pera is quite a quiet, chilled place to go to. They are loads of very tasty restaurants, try Fernandos nr the Rosamar hotel and also the Fish restaurant (not quite sure of its real name) that is situated on the beach is so nice i wish I was there now! The nightlife is quite reserved, there are loads of really nice quiet bars (a tip for you is that the bars get quite a lot busier when the restaurants close and the Portugese come out! - this is around 12-1) So its worth staying out that little bit longer. there is quite a funky nightclub that is situated in the old town, it is full of Portugese and we staggered home at 7am!!! Fab tho!!! i would really suggest this resort if you are not into the 'Busy Brit pub/ club scene' and just want to chill out. Hope this review helps and i hope you have a lovely holiday =)

Returned home from Portugal on Friday having spent a week at the Vila Gale. As this is a hotel review website I'll try not to dwell too much on the negative aspects of this resort and that portion of the Algarve we ventured out into. Suffice to say Portugal must have been quite nice 30 years ago but is now a half finished breeze-block nightmare.

However, this hotel is very good and deserves its 4 stars. The staff are smartly turned out, efficient and friendly, and the hotel is nicely decorated, with lots of marble and brass. We had a junior suite on the 4th floor with a very large terrace (even had our own sun-lounger) with a view of the sea (room 451). Our suite was very comfortable and kept spotlessly clean by the lovely house-keeping staff, although the bathroom could do with bleaching as there was black mould around the bath. I have to agree with other reviewers about the soundproofing between rooms - the walls really are paper thin and you just have to hope that the people next door will be considerate. Unfortunately, for our first couple of nights the woman next door seemed to be going through some kind of mental breakdown. At about 11.30pm they would return and she would spend a couple of hours alternately laughing hysterically or sobbing uncontrollably. Fortunately they left.

The outdoor pool was too cold to swim in, but we made good use of the indoor pool and jacuzzi. Didn't use the gym but it looked impressive!

The restaurant is excellent for breakfast. Pretty much everything you could want, but I would suggest going out for dinner as the buffet at the hotel is not bad but nothing special and quite expensive.

The entertainment is limited and quite frankly a bit of a joke and I would strongly suggest ordering drinks at the bar. We were told to take a seat and someone would take our order but 20 minutes later we were still waiting - after that we always ordered at the bar.

The beach is five minutes away and I can understand that if that's all you want from a holiday it ticks all the boxes. The sand and cliffs are a beautiful golden colour and the beach is kept very clean. The water is clear and hardly tidal, so great for kids. Unfortunately I just couldn't get past what an eyesore the resort is - perhaps I'm just too picky!

All in all we had a nice week, mainly due to the hotel, so thankyou Vila Gale.

Incidentally, Vilamoura marina is worth a visit. We took a boat trip from there and had a very nice afternoon. If you want a boat trip I would suggest walking around to the far side of the marina by the huge hotel, where you can book to go on a big old sailing ship, The Condor. We stopped at the first boat place we saw and our boat was nothing special.
