“First class customer service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

We arrived at the Riu Palace to a glass of bubbly and a warm welcome. We spent our holiday in a very spacious, well equipped and tidy room. My only slight complaint might be that the mattress was very hard, but I believe that if this is a problem for you the housekeeping department are happy to change it. The food at this hotel is awesome - a great selection of fresh fruit and salad, together with a wide range of meats and fish. It is the first hotel I have ever visited where there is no rush to book the alternative restaurant because the food in the main restaurant is that good. The waiting staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. A special thank you to Nelson, who made our dining experience a delightful one with is wit and charm - a true asset to the Riu Palace team. Another quite outstanding aspect of our holiday was the ever present management team. Always smiling and very friendly, they were at the doors of the restaurant to greet you for your evening meal and breakfast. We were introduced to the restaurant manager, reception manager, house keeping manager, bar manager and the hotel manager. We considered this to be a really nice touch. The outdoor area is serviced by a pool bar, which has a very nice seating area inside and outside. Another big thank you to Manuel - very shy and unassuming, Manuel delivered a top class service throughout our stay. There is a good range of cocktails and ice creams available that are all delivered to your table or sun lounger with a smile. The pool area was clean and well presented. This is possibly the only area though that stops this from being a 5 star hotel. There is NO pool side entertainment. This is something that we enjoy as a family so the absence of any action by the pool was a little disappointing. That said, I am sure there are some people who this set up would ideally suit. There is and indoor pool complete with sauna, steam room whirl pool and showers. The beach was accessed by a great many steps - but lets face it, if the beach is down a cliff side what can the hotel do about this?!! The steps were well worth the effort, with the beach extending over miles of sea and sand. There are a couple of good restaurants on the beach for meals and drinks. However, the tables tend to get booked very quickly.
The little village in which the hotel is situated is a small walk out of the hotel and this is where we headed in the evenings to avoid the 'pub singer' in the hotel. Entertainment is definitely the only area where I feel this hotel is lacking. Riu Palace pay attention to every detail and provide a seamless service that is very friendly and obliging. Nothing is ever too much trouble. I would thoroughly recommend a stay in this hotel if you are visiting the Algarve.
Portugal was a lovely place to visit with wall to wall sunshine, but it is not somewhere I would make a return visit to in a hurry. As a family we enjoy taking part in the excursions and experiencing a little of the foreign culture. The excursions in Portugal were failing on every level - it all seems half-hearted and surrounded by health and safety red tape. Even though I took out holiday insurance to cover us for our chosen activities, the Portuguese laws made us unable to take part in the things we love. (Jet skiing, quad biking, etc.) We visited a water park called Slide and Splash, which according to reviews is the best that Portugal has to offer. It was ok but nothing special, especially compared with Sian Park, Tenerife.
Riu Palace really made our holiday so many, many thanks. If they could just liven up the entertainment a little, there would be no where better.

Room Tip: We had room 2059, which due to where it falls in the general lay out of the hotel, provides a genero...

Our stay in this hotel was amazing and there were very few negatives.

When we arrived there was no queue at check-in but we were still offered a glass of prosecco. We booked directly with the hotel through their website and there were no problems. We booked our transfer from the airport with yellowish and I would also recommend them (it was €60 return and we got a free bottle if wine).

The staff in the hotel are all extremely helpful and polite and the manager and assistant manager both made efforts to speak to us and check that we were enjoying our stay.

Our room was nice, the only improvements that could be made would be that the TV was very old fashioned and a flat screen is needed, the bed was two singles pushed together rather than a double, and it cost extra to use the safe.

The pool area was very nice with plenty of sunbeds available (even though many people still selfishly put towels down before breakfast to "reserve" them).

There weren't many children in the hotel, which suited us as a young couple, but if you have kids it'd be worth bearing in mind that no entertainment is put on for them.

The beach area and the sea are nice but there are no sunbeds and there is a walk down some steps to get there. Again, this was fine for us but if you have mobility problems you'd struggle to get to the beach.

The food is incredible in the hotel. The buffet has different areas for Italian food, seafood, the chef's station, starters, salads, desserts and show cooking. All of the food is great and it's very easy to overeat! There is also a separate non-buffet restaurant that is included in the half board but which needs to be reserved in advance; when we went I had beef cappracio, fillet steak and a chocolate tort. Water is reasonably expensive in the hotel but alcoholic drinks aren't too dear.

One downside is that the gym isn't very good, mainly because it isn't air conditioned.

In terms of the area around the hotel, it's in between albufeira and vilamoura and you can walk to either if you not unfit (about two hours walk each way) or you can get a bus from the stop which is a two minute walk from the hotel. There are a few bars and restaurants near the hotel too (we never ate in the restaurants though because the food in the hotel was so good).

I returned from this hotel yesterday (Thursday 1st August) after staying there a week with my husband & my 15 year old son as we arrived we was greeted my glass of champagne,I have to say I was very impressed with the staff so friendly & helpful and the hotel is spotless inside & out,the bedroom is very spacious and loads of wardrobe space, the bathroom is also large,we paid extra for a sea view and thats exactly what we got very quiet & relaxing on the balcony over looking the sea,the food was superb breakfast & dinner and we had a sitting of 6.30pm, we changed it a few times to the 8.30pm which wasn't a problem for the staff as the hotel has 2 dinner sittings 6.30pm & 8.30pm & the managers are at the entrance to greet you breakfast & dinner. The drinks was reasonable in price, some people have mentioned the hard beds but my husband and I and my son didn't think this was a problem we sleeved like logs. The thomson rep Phill was very helpful he knew a lot of knowledge on the location, we went to Zoomarine to swim with dolphins he booked it up for us & kept us updated and very professional. The gardens were beautiful I would definitely return to this hotel, this is perfect if you want a bit of peace & quiet and relax. Not much for young children as its a quiet hotel to relax so no free wifi as it is to get away from everything.I would definitely be returning in the near future.

We stayed here in July 2013 as a family with a disabled child. This was our second stay at the hotel. The hotel is stunning and is immaculately maintained both inside and out. The staff are extremely helpful and polite and we were particularly impressed with their helpfulness and friendly attitude towards our disabled son. The food is wonderful in the restaurant and the waiters all very attentive. A special mention for the bar manager, Jack, who was always so welcoming and friendly. The Thomson Rep, Phill, was also very helpful and knowledgeable about the local area.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to others. The beds are on the firm side but this is improved with mattress toppers which are swiftly provided if you ask for them. The WIFI is not brilliant but then the hotel is intended for a holiday and so it was a welcome break to be away from the Net. If you are looking for a hotel where you can relax, where there are not too many children, it is not too noisy and the food, service and staff are excellent, then this is the one for you.

We stayed here as a couple and the location is perfect with the room we had providing breath taking views over the cliffs and sea below. The hotel itself was absolutely immaculate and our room was stunning. We had booked half board and the food was certainly 5 star with a stunning variety each night. The breakfast was also superb. We found the drinks to be very reasonable for a 5 star hotel. We would not hesitate to return. It is a place for couples and groups who are looking for peace and quiet. It's not for young families or clubbers.

RIU PALACE OLHUS D’AGUA

Fantastic again. My wife and I stayed here for a week form the 18th to the 25th of July.

This was our third visit.

What can I say, the food, the rooms, which are spacious, the staff etc. etc. are all wonderful.

We had a garden view because we do not sunbathe or sit on the balcony. If you want a sea view/pool view then you will have to pay extra, this would be a waste for us. The gardens are beautiful anyway if you want to look out of the balcony.

The beach is about half a mile downhill from the hotel or you could walk down about 200 steps just at the side of the hotel or about 120 steps through the Porto Bay Falisia Hotel, although these steps put you onto the beach around the corner from the main Olhos D’agua beach. You can access either beach from all three ways provided the tide is out so take care not to go around either way if the tide is coming in. The best way is down the road, although you have to walk around the road to access the road. This may not be in the best position if you have young children that want to go to the beach because of the access.

Would we go again. Most certainly.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 1028, which is the opposite side to the main road to the beach, which can get a bi...
