We stayed at Lageado Sol for 9 nights in September. We booked less than a month before arriving in Albufeira, and we were very limited as to what hotels were available at this short notice. We chose Lageado Sol purely based on the excellent reviews, and was left a little disappointed by our experience.
We arrived late at night, however once we had called him, Salvatore arrived very quickly to check us in. He was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. We had a couple of issues with our room, such as lights not working, and Salvatore got these sorted very promptly.
We had a studio room. This consisted of two sofa beds. We did think this may be a problem but we pushed them together and they were really comfortable. There is a small kitchen area, and this includes a hob (not great!), microwave and fridge as well as pretty much everything you would need to cook a basic meal. We had a table and chairs in the studio, as well as a basic plastic table and chairs outside on the decent sized balcony. In the bathroom there was a shower over the bath. This was really powerful, but we did have issues with hot water throughout our holiday, with it lasting around 5 minutes max.
Our room was not the cleanest on arrival, and we walked in to a very smelly room. We eventually worked out that a vent had been left open in the bathroom, resulting in some disgusting smells, but this was easily resolved. Our room never seemed to really get cleaned. Our bedding was stained when we arrived, it was changed only once during our stay, and this was after 7 days. Bins were emptied regularly, but it seemed like little else was done.
I had read in reviews about the showers leaking so was expecting this. However what we were not prepared for was the bathroom completely flooding every time we had a shower. It is not just a trickle of water. Staff are obviously aware of the situation, but rather than fixing it they have just put a manky mop in the bathroom.
The hotel is quite strict about guests not taking food and drink to the pool area. This is fair enough, and many hotels have this rule. However the bar area did not open regularly, some days not opening until lunch time (and even then it would only be open a few hours), and other days not opening at all. Even when open the bar does not sells any food, even basic snacks. I am not sure what guests are supposed to do if there are not the facilities in the hotel to buy food and drink.
The other thing we did not like was that the hotel seem to charge for everything. To use a hairdryer or iron you had to put a deposit down on 10 euros. You even had to pay a small fee for reception to book a taxi for you.
The location of the hotel is fantastic for the strip. It is around a ten minute walk, close enough to have a slow stroll down but far enough away that you don’t get any of the noise. It’s also right next to a Pingo Doce supermarket. We did find it a bit out of the way of the old town though. We timed the walk one evening and it was around 30 minutes. A taxi costs about 5 euros.
Overall we have quite a mixed opinion on the hotel. I am not sure whether we just arrived late in the season and this is why we had a bad experience, with rooms a bit tired etc. We talked to other guests and there experiences were all the same as ours, some even worse. The hotel has its good points, but there is definitely a lot that needs improving.
