“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

The Hotel Montechoro gets a few very unfair reviews. It's true that the glory days when it was a four star hotel with five star service have gone, but it still represents very good value for money. Yes, the rooms are slightly retro, but they're huge, comfortable and everything works. One great feature is that every floor above the ground is carpeted throughout. That means no noise of tables and chairs being moved at night. The low level lighting is designed to create an air of calm and now bright lights shining through the door when you're sleeping. There's a large, immaculate pool area. It's not a hotel with entertainment and certainly not equipped for all-inclusive. However, we had no complaints whatsoever and being at the quieter, top end of the strip is very handy. Don't be put off by people with unreasonable expectations.

Hotel is not 4 star more like a good 3. But I did enjoy my stay here. The pool area is lovely it is very clean and tidy the hotel itself. The rooms are ok but we did not have air con our room and they advised we did but only 1 button works out the 3! But after trying all 3 it still did not work.
Breakfast is good but would not rate going half board the dinners are horrible we ended up eating out every night. There are some nice restaurants close by but it's is very tacky down the town! Depends on what you like but it was not my scene. Very friendly staff

I agree with some people who say they don't know what the bad reviews are about...this hotel is good. It is by no means 4 or 5 star, I would say a good 3 star. The Montechoro was the first hotel to open in this part of Albufeira in 1970's and the 'Strip' and all around it exists due to the hotel. It is clean, tidy, staff very efficient (if a bit sombre....so what, they were always helpful and good at their jobs?) the cleaning of the rooms by maids every day INCLUDING sunday was exceptional. 8 towels left everyday for 4 of us. The hotel is beautifully decorated in Morroccan style, hence the dim lighting which sets the ambience. Pool is clean which is the main thing, and the pool man is there all day checking water quality and cleaning about. Breakfast is plentiful....something for everyone, full english, a whole selection of cakes/bread/toast/rolls/croissants/jam, coffee, tea, juices, hot choc, yoghurts, fruit!! The inside bar and pool bar are nice too. Reception never charged me once for ordering taxis. We had a great view of the strip and the sea from 8th floor.

The area around the hotel seems to all belong to the same company (clube 99, some villas, sports facilities, etc) and is all looking a bit derelict to be honest. There is word that Jet2 have bought it all tho, if this is true, the complex will be amazing in a few years.

Erins Isle Irish pub is brill accross the road, amazing food, drinks, entertainment for kids and adults, staff v.helpful (let us use their printer in an emergency!) Montechoro Hotel is at quieter end of strip, but there are plenty of nice bars and restaurants within 2 mins. The othere busier end of strip is more for young clubbers, its very noisy, busy and expensive, and food not as good, so we preferred the Montechoro end. Try the English Kitchen or the Cottage for great service and British food, Pedra Blanca for amazing mediterranean/portuguese food, we were disappointed with the Kohinoor indian though.

Room Tip: Go for high floor sea view.

I think some of these reviews are ridiculously farfetched, reading these almost ruined my holiday before I even got there!
The hotel itself is lovely, I requested early check in, a sea view and a double bed, all of which were easily granted, the dim lights in the hotel are to keep it cool, which it certainly did. We had a room on the 5th floor which was beautiful, you don't need a high room to enjoy your stay at all.
The location is perfect, at the top of the strip, its a lovely walk down with so many little shops, restaurants and bars, if you were stopping here i'd defiantly only go bed and breakfast and not all inclusive, the food on the strip is absolutely delicious and offers you much more choice at a cheap price than the hotel.
Overall my partner and I had a lovely stay in both the hotel and Albuferia!
Your holiday at the end of the day is what you make it so ignore these reviews! Its value for the money you pay!

Room Tip: Request a sea view before you get there.

Stayed here for a week, overall very disappointing. The only good points were the soft beds in the room , the shop on the ground floor with papers, spacious rooms and cupboards. Overall very quiet. Fantastic view from balcony, best feature.

The restaurant was bad, really awful! Very repetitive menus. Same food every day for breakfast. No a la carte menu just buffets, evening meals atrocious, chicken stew, rice, sprouts!!!! Phoned reception many times, no answer. No English speaking staff to tell me what some of the food was, told me in Portuguese. Lack of potatoes!!! No fresh coffee, sachets and add your own water. Deserts sickly, no cheeses. Dining room empty. It took us five minutes to explain that we wanted hot/boiled water!!

The room itself was not very clean with an old bathroom suite, poor satellite channels, reception often unmanned, no drinks facilities in room, no luggage storage room, lack of English speaking staff, dirty linen and pillowcases, door keypad a nightmare, no entertainment. Very dark corridors.

In terms of the facilities, hairdressers, never found it??? The spa was not there. Antiquated fridge in room, would not close! Air conditioner blew hot air!!! WiFi limited. Swimming pool cloudy. The gift shop appeared never to be open. Rated 4 star, cannot be right?

Room Tip: Book another hotel!!!

Stayed at Hotel Montechoro 12/6 to 20/6 -2013.

Hotel standards has declined since we last stayed there 5 yrs ago, stayed here a few times, but as other reviewers state, it is desperate tor a refurb, main public areas are fine but rooms dated and standards not as they used to be, , Breakfast was same every day and quality of food and drink not as appetising as in the past, we ended up eating out after 3 days, upside is the pool area is really lovely and staff are really nice and helpful too, so sad to see the decline of a once Flagship hotel, if rumours are right it is said to be changing ownership and then renovation, but don't know if true, I hope so!

Places to eat/Drink- Plentiful, lots of Portuguese Restaurants have' menu of the day' average price 10 euros for 3&4 course meals, great value, in particular we ate at 'Sunset on the Strip for the best Sirlon steak ever 9e and 'Os Compadres' in the small square at top of strip by 60s bar, fabulous food, 4 courses for approx 9 euros..also in same square 'the English Kitchen' great breakfast from 3.75e and Sundays roasts, not forgetting the Cottage which is now down at lower end of the Strip, both really good places to eat if you want English food, but don't be afraid to eat Portuguese as they are great too.Nice Restaurants in Old town square slightly dearer, but worth the view as you eat, we chose 'Bravo' Italian, biggest portions ever seen in an Italian Restaurant, also the Sir Harry does the best ever English breakfast! .Albufiera & Strip has improved and a great place for all age groups, can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: we stayed overlooking the main entrance, but heard that some rooms overlooking the pool (& strip...

Just home from a week at Montechoro Hotel We paid for H/B but had to eat out We had dinner in the pool bar for 2 nights dining room closed lack of customers. 2 main courses to choose from I asked for breaded fish I was given fish fingers I saw red Then I had breast of chicken It was flat in batter that looked liked it was bought in LIdl Nothing against Lidl I shop there. I expected 4 star food The management is giving false advertisement.Very bad lighting in the halls .Half of hotel closed.Dining room opened for our last 2 nights because a coach full of students arrived.Even then food terrible. Choice of 1 meat rice and carrots The only positive was nice big bedroom spotless clean comfy bed Would never stay again.
