Just returned from a week at the Pateo Village and here is my review of the place.
First impression: visually not that great but I think I judged it too quickly. Check in was slightly annoying as guests who were also checking in and were before us in the queue were given their room keys straight away while we were told our room wasn't ready yet. After commenting that the previous people were given their keys we were told we could have another room that was ready instead of waiting for our room?? Didn't really understand why this room wasn't offered to us in the first place? Once that was sorted there were no other issues. Reception is open 24 hours which is handy and if you need a taxi they will order one for you but charge 50 cents for the call.
Apartment: Basic, clean, big and spacious with separate bedroom and sofa beds in the lounge. Large wardrobes in bedroom with a few hangers. Found the beds to be comfortable enough. Two balconies, the one off the lounge was huge and the bedroom balcony smaller. All the facilities you would expect in the kitchen were there, fridge, oven, microwave, kettle etc. bathroom was fine, dated but adequate. Shower was great. Apartment was cleaned and towels changed every other day. We had a flat screen t.v but only sky news and a rubbish film channel were in English. Reception asks for 20 euro deposit for t.v remote.
Grounds: Two outdoor pools and one indoor which we didn't use so can't comment on those but looked nice from the balcony. There is an onsite shop which is more expensive than the supermarkets but for the basics we needed, milk, coffee etc we just bought them from the shop for convenience. There are lots of cats (and one dog) about the place, all were harmless and very cute but some people may not like that.
Surrounding area: There really isn't much outside of these apartments apart from a supermarket and a couple of restaurants, mamma mia is one and just opposite another one but can't remember the name. We ate in both and had nice meals both times. We did feel as if we were in the middle of nowhere. I read other reviews before we went and some said you can walk to old town and beach and others said it was too far. I have to agree it is too far to walk, especially in 30+ degree heat. We are in our 30's and relatively fit but it's not my idea of a holiday to be hot and bothered before I've even reached where I'm going so we decided on taxis but each to their own.
Beach: We went to the local beach at the old town on our first day (which we were told is called fishermans beach) and were really disappointed, the sand was full of broken shells, literally everywhere, to the point where every step you took something would cut into your feet even in flip flops. It was packed and had awful portaloo type toilets, reminded us of southend. We didn't stick around. We asked our rep the next day if there was another local beach and were told to try oura beach in the new town which is definitely too far to walk and a taxi was usually between 7-8 euros one way. It is a lot of money to spend there and back every day but if you like to sunbathe on a nice beach as we do it is worth it as it was miles better than the fishermans beach. A few nice places to grab lunch there too.
Old town: Very nice and loads going on, too many places to mention but we liked the rock cafe, had a nice meal and saw a decent band there. The atmosphere is generally nice although saw a few stag do's where the men were loud, rude and lowered the tone a bit but then you get that most places I suppose. Embarrassingly they were usually English!!
To sum up it was an enjoyable cheap(ish) week in the sun, apartments were fine but in my opinion too far away from the action. Would I go back? Probably not and probably wouldn't go rushing back to Portugal either but for couples/families who want a basic place and don't mind walking (or paying for taxis) I would recommend.
