“Absolutely fine”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

Good points:

-very spacious, clean apartment (if a little basic - but hey its fairly cheap) with 2 nice balconies and nice views.
-Complex for the most part set in a pretty, peaceful area on a hill.
-The old town is seriously lovely with plenty to see and do and some decent eateries.

Not so good points:

-Grumpy staff and customer service in general needs looking at... for example being told we had to wait till 3pm before we could get in our room having arrived at 11 - we could accept this (just) - but to discover rooms were actually ready at around 12 when we'd already waited around for hours on end was not acceptable (why didn't they just tell us when we were sitting in reception BORED out of our brains!?)

-The stray dogs and cats are all very sweet and nice natured and it's clear the hotel look out for them, but if you're going to feed them and allow them to roam the complex please be decent and have them de-flead! For the sake of the animals and the guests especially children.

-The old town is where people go who want a peaceful tranquil restful holiday stay. So it was dissapointing to have to put up with big groups of men on stag dos getting drunk and loud by the pool everyday, holidaying teens staying up playing loud music ALL night every night and so on without any concern from staff about their other guests. (I'd like to point out I am 22 and my boyfriend is 29 so we're young ourselves and this was STILL extremely annoying.)

I would however just like to add that there were no break ins while we were there (other reviews mentioned this!?) the place seemed very safe (cctv) the pools are lovely and clean as are the surrounding areas and the housekeeping was efficient and every other day as expected. Don't come here if you don't enjoy walking - the walk back from town is all uphill but we did it everyday! it's fine. we were shocked at the amount of people who all got taxis back everytime! no wonder britain has an obesity problem!? Also Zoomarine is an awesome day out!! Overall a great week in the sun.

we have just returned my husband and i from a one weeks stay here. it was are first time to Portugal and we loved it so much , we arrived on the early morning flight from doncaster at 11 . 30 in the morning , arriving to wonderful hot sunshine, the coach took about a good hour to arrive at pateo village as it dropped at a few hotels first and we were the last drop off, but it was great as we could see all the sights and loads of orange, lemon and limes trees. first impressions of pateo village was clean and well looked after. we arrived at check in at 12 30 , and was told we could leave our bags in a special room , as all room are not ready till 3pm, that was no problem as we slipped into our shorts and swim wear and went down to the pool bar for a bit of lunch , great bar food next to the pool . after lunch we sat in the sun around the pool until3pm. our room was ready spot on 3 , we were on the top floor right at the end ,overlooking the pool from the front and a fantastic view over the mountains all around the sides and back . first impressions of our apartment were brill,,,, very clean, massive, large lounge, kitchen area with every single thing you need, large clean bathroom with full bath and shower, beautiful white soft towels, bedroom at the rear over looking the mountains. and the balconey was a sun worshipers heaven the biggest ever !!!! with table and chairs , we fetched two sun loungers up to ours as there is loads around the pool,We was going to go to Aldi to do a shop for the week but it is a long walk up a steep hill going and coming back but if you turn right as you come out of pateo walk just down the little road and turn left there is a little supermarket there were the lady is so lovely and friendly , and they sell everything you need and cheap , so we just had a stroll down there for our food shop , The walk into the old town is great if you get to know the short cuts , about 15 mins but we always got acab back as up hill ,the old town was fantastic , we loved it , market stalls up the cobbled tree lined streets , loads of great shops to look around , and a fantastic square with loads and loads of bars to sit and chill and people watch, with lots of street entertainers, fantastic,,,,,, we didnt eat out much as we love the self catering side of this holiday as we just have loads of salads as it was too hot to eat , but if you like dinning out there are loads and loads of fantastic places to eat . if you like it a bit lively if you go down the narrow streets next to the square here there is loads of disco, kareoke bars , and brill street entertainment. .. we went to the beach most days in the day time , lovely clean beaches, then came back in the afternoon , around the pool or on our very private balcony, we loved pateo village it was nice and quiet only thing thers a cock a doodle do at a farm over the back and its at it all day and night but it didnt bother us after a few drinks ,people who pull this place to bits are just nit picking as its a great place for the money.there is a shop on site for bare essentials ,eg water bread ,,,, the maids came in every other day and cleaned the place fully . clean white soft towels ,,, so we loved this place ,,,,,

Room Tip: dont go for a ground floor room as at night there are a lot of stray cats and dogs around and they j...

No shuttle bus as per the website so it's around 4-5 euros in a taxi to and from the old town around £8-9 to the new town. The walk down is around 15 mins to old town but too much to walk back you will need a taxi back. There is one nice receptionist called Sandra the rest are a bit blunt. Snack bar near pool expensive 2 euros for a can of pop but there is a supermarket 5 mins walk away so I would advise to buy from there. We had a stag do staying when we was there that was very roudy near the pool playing drinking games and the staff didn't tell them to calm down which was disappointing as we couldn't sun bath near the pool when they we're there. The apartments are very spacious however and have everything you need for self catering. The main let down was the place wasn't very clean could do a good scrub. Would I go back no, however you get what you pay for here.

My family arrived 12th June for a 2 week stay first impression wasn't that bad, arrived around 12pm to be told we had to wait 3 hours to check in and me having 4 kids who where very grumpy and tried this wasn't good at all.
Through out our stay my children had cut there feet on the bottom of both pools several times due to great big holes and loose tiles!!
Cats and dogs using the grounds at there own personal toilet cat poo everywhere, flea bitten dogs constantly walking round begging for food and scrounging through bins.
In the Thompson brouche it was stated to have entertainment every night but unfortunately we was to learn that it has not been doing any entertainment for some years! Pateo village is surrounded by many derelict hotels and apartments the on site shop is really expensive but a few minutes walk down the hill is a reasonable supermarket

So we went to Pateo Village for a week during Easter. We got an apartment which was very spacious and comfortable. The beds were a bit hard and the pillows were terrible. We had a room right in the front of the pool which was beautiful giving easy access to the pools and bar. The indoor pool was excellent being clean and warm for any time of the year. The outdoor pool was a bit too cold to swim in during April but it seemed that it would be lovely any other time. The reception is nothing special and the staff were ok but not very friendly. There were cats freely roaming around the pool and walking into the patio of our room which was very annoying. Our room was only cleaned once during the week which was a shock. The main issue here was that transport was a COMPLETE DISASTER. If you don't like walking for long distances and in hilly types of places then you need to rent a car which is what we did after a day there. The centre is lovely and the beaches are great too. The slide parks are great and I recommend a visit to ZooMarine. We also used the car to go to Lisbon for a day which was absolutely gorgeous despite the 3 hour trip. Also, getting food is an issue if you don't have a car because the market in the hotel is very expensive but a 10 minute walk can get you to a decent market where you can buy everything you need. I won't be coming back again but it was still an enjoyable holiday.

Room Tip: Opt for an apartment as they are very roomy and you have a good chance of getting a room right in fr...

Right ill keep this as simple and informative as I can.

Firstly none of the rooms are available until at least 2pm so if you get there early expect a wait. There is a luggage room so its fine, but if you have young children or babies have a little bag prepared so that you don’t have to rummage through suitcases like us!!

I was on the 3rd floor (Top Floor), great one bed apartment. This had a large bedroom with huge wardrobe, dresser and chair and bedside lockers, and two single beds (there are no double beds in the hotel) this suited fine as it was for me and my young child. Large bathroom, kitchen (everything you need) just get some kitchen paper etc., very large living area with table and 4 chairs and a coffee table etc. A huge balcony with great views, I overlooked the pool and it was lovely. The rooms are a little dated and could do with paint, but very very clean and really comfortable. Door double locks and you have a chain lock also, so I always felt safe. If you have small children and you have a pool view on a ground floor apartment just be mindful that there is no gate or wall on your balcony so you have to watch the kids as they have free reign to run straight into the pools.

Pools are not heated but lovely for the kids once they get used to them; being honest it was so hot they were welcome relief to the heat.

On site there is a pool bar that opens until 5 and then the main bar opens from 5-1am. Really pleasant bar man called Alex. I hadn’t many dealings with the other staff being honest.

Shop on site has most bits, however there is a supermarket just down the road and another at the side of Mama Mia's 2, both are great the latter cheaper again. Lidl is great but a good 20minute walk, being honest not much point.

As for location, it’s a 15-20 minute downhill walk to the old town, and 5euro or so home. Perfect.

Eating- Mama Mias 2 is good for breakie (a little slow though and forgot something every time we went) but lovely staff. When you come out of the hotel and get to the bottom of the hill, to your right is what looks like a coffee shop with red umbrellas and chairs outside right opposite Mama Mia's 1, he does a great breakfast very cheap and a lovely coffee, I would highly recommend this place, he doesn’t say much but food is really really good (there is also one similar beside the coffee shop, we didn’t go there though).
Down in the town we ate in a few places:
The Bank- Good food little more expensive
Shalom 1 and 2- Fab very reasonable too
Bravo- Good food reasonable also

We done Zoo marine, booked it through Paul the Thomson Rep, he is there most days. Its about 28eur for an adult and free for a child under a meter. My child is 3 and a half and quite tall and she was well under the meter. Fantastic day out, dolphin show is a must and the seal show is great too. its 20euro for a pic with the dolphins, but you have to be over 1 meter, and 10euro for a pic with the seals, no height requirement and they do the pictures after the shows only. So just be aware of that. Lovely pool and beach area. Food was fine just got snacks for the kids, a little on the pricey side but these things always are.

All in all, Is it Ritz? No. But its clean and very comfortable. Nice atmosphere too.
I will be booking again next year for definite.

Room Tip: Refer above regarding balconies with young children
