“Summer Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

stayed here July 13. it was a last minute deal & was very impressed with the hotel. when arriving we were told our room wasnt ready yet & would we mind waiting by the pool. (i hate it when hotels do this, they know what time the flight is, so the room should be ready). anyway after waiting for only 20 mins or so we went to our room & it was a basic room. nice & clean with two singles pushed together. the pool area was nice & had a nice shaded part with palm trees when it got too hot. food was always nice, if a little limited, but there are 6 or so restaurants within a 5 minute walk, that we only ate here during the afternoon. there are at least 4 alcoves within walking distance if you dont want to stay by the pool & these were never crowded, however the sea could be a little rough, so not much snorkeling done. overall a very nice hotel, in a really quiet location, perfect for relaxing & unwinding.

The hotel is in a very quiet location away from the nightlife and bars.Obviously you need a car or taxi to move around, or to go to a different beach than the one that is near the hotel. There is always parking space outside. The rooms are good value for money and clean. We met various personnel at the reception:Some were very helpful and other(actually one) rather unfriendly. The balconies with a view at sea are a good plus. The free wifi at the reception is convenient, but it would be better if there was throughout the hotel.

I have good and some not so good to say about Torre Velha.. the not so good is more constructive citisism amd by no means a bad review.
Over all, this litle place is a little gem...this is largely due to the staff and how friendly they are as apposed to location. You couldnt want for anyone better than Bella on the front desk, she is helpful, friendly and very aproachable. A lovely lady.
Then theres Marta, who pretty much runs the bar area and restaraunt area is very friendly, helpful and subtely funny..infact she probably doesnt realise how humorous and funny her one liners are, or her little inoffensive mannerisms. she had me giggling on more than a few occasions. She always has a smile for you and will make idol chitchat with you about anything you like. She works lots of hours and I hope when she finally gets a break that she thouroughly enjoys it!!
The hotel although it could do with a little facelift is kept immaculately clean at all times. the furniture in the bar area is in my opinion ugly and not very comfortable, but again kept clean and tidy at all times...It wouldnt hurt however to have beer mats on the tables.
The food in the restaurant is really quite nice, particularly the reasonably priced sword fish and the salmon. Very nicely cooked by the chef and good sized portions.
The bar is like a home from home bar, it has every drink imaginable and the collection of whiskys behind the glass cabinets is amazing!! The beer and wines are cheap but the shorts are not, charging 3.50 euros and then another 1 euro for a splash of coke or lemonade is a little bit of a pee take if you ask me.
Tho pool area is quite intimate and small, but its a lovely little area and the pool is very clean.
The rooms are very basic, but I guess you get what you pay for.. they are a little darkly lit, there is only one window and that is in the bathroom and is about a foot square. The only other source of natural light is the balcony door which is at the far end of the room and unless you open it, there is no natural light what so ever.
There is a small fridge which does the job but if you want a kettle you just need to ask Bella and she will give you one. The fan on the ceiling is huge and sounds like a propellor...lol but it does what its intended to do and that is cool you down, its a bit noisy in the dead of night but if youve had enough alcohol, youll soon drop off lol.
The matress is abit hard and most nights I would toss and turn and mornings I woke with a stiff back. However, my partner had no complaints about the matress..so I guess its a personal preference.
As a critisism I would have to say this, we booked for self catering but you cant self cater with no utilities to do so..there is no cutlery, no table to sit at, no cooking facility within the room, not even a toaster, no cups etc. The restaurant closed while we were there between 3pm amd 6pm, so if you got hungry and didnt want to go off the grounds, youre pretty much stuffed as you are not allowed to bring food in from the mini supermarket up the road and eat it within the grounds. This rule I think should be discretionary...particularly when there is no food being served and no way to make yourself anything in your room.
The beach is within walking distance, pic nic beach is about a 5 minute walk and Evaristo a little longer...maybe 10 mins downhill and 15 back.
There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance ..Tia Maria which is run by an English fella, very friendly, O Amigo, a very friendly husband and wife establishement which serves the best Salmon ive ever had. There is Scoobys and Jks, both owned by English fellas and both offering a nice full English breakfast at reasonable prices. Both places are very welcoming.
And if you want to have a wander into the old town, its around 7 to 8 euros one way by cab.
Over all, I found the hotel very easy going, and although I have some critisism about the place, I would deffinately stay there again.
For me its more about the friendliness of the staff and feeling comfortable with them. Theres alot to be said for being hospitable, helpful and aproachable and the people in this place have that.
If this place was updated decorative wise, it would become more of a little gem than it already is.
If you want a cheap friendly break in the Algarve and dont mind being 10 or 15 minutes away from the old or new town then without a doubt ...stay here!!!

Room Tip: dont have room 110, the door seems to open itself, even when its locked...very spooky...lol

The hotel is quite and the staff are very friendly. Rooms are basic but clean. It is not 5*, so do not expect it. As a budget hotel it is very good. To the person that thought the staff were rude, all I can say is you get what you give. Everyone else thought they were great and most were on first name terms and it does state that it is continental breakfast. What is disgusting about fresh bread with cheese and ham.? If you are used to army food, you must have been in a regiment that was pampered.
To the person that said "no kettle", try reading your booking form. All you have to do is ask and you will get kettle and cups.
I am disabled and found that the staff would go out of their way to accommodate my needs. The hotel is adapted to people with mobility problems but I would think carefully about the area due to the hills.
If you want a quite, friendly hotel to chill by the pool or laze on the beach, then this is ideal. Lots of good restaurants in the area. If you want night life, then you are in the wrong area.

Just returned from a weeks stay at the torre velha. It is quite a small hotel about 10 minutes drive from the centre but don't let that put you off! We went with our 20 month old baby and even though there's nothing much for kids to do he loved it! The staff were very willing to help you out especially bella on reception she was great always arranging trips for us! Also Marta who worked in the bar area was great they always made an effort to make sure our toddler was happy and smiling! The hotel is exceptionally clean and tidy although a bit dated. There is a few lovely beaches about 5 minutes walk from the hotel but be prepared for a bit of a walk uphill to get back! A lot of people moan about this but we did it fine with a toddler and pushchair so it can't be that bad!! I would also advise to go room only as the breakfast is a bit boring- cheese, ham and toast can be quite boring after a while but thank god for scoobies up the road!! They do a great English breakfast! Don't listen to the bad reviews you get what you pay for if people wanted more they should of put there hand in there pocket instead of writing a bad review. Excellent value for money and we will return again!

I will start by saying if you want a good holiday for god sake do not book this hotel.
We have just returned from our holiday after having to spend 2 weeks in this place.
To put it in a nutshell this place almost ruined our holiday.
The staff are rude and spend more time outside smoking and drinking than getting on with the job they are meant to be doing.
The breakfast is disgusting and this is being said by someone who has eaten army food!!.
The rooms are not very clean and we even had to ask for a bath plug.
All in all dont bother, dont waste your money,
The other reviews must have been written by the owner or by people with very low expectations.
If it was not for a lovely little cafe just down the road called JK's i think we would have gone mad.
You have been warned!!!!!

Room Tip: Check out the area on google earth to get a feel if you have not been there before

Lets start by not calling the Torre Velha a hotel but more of a friendly bar restaurant that has a swimming pool and rooms making for a nice friendly atmosphere. Its is well supported by genuinely friendly and helpful staff in a quiet location with just a few other bars and cafe's close by. The rooms are quite small having a fridge and TV but they are adequate and well maintained. We were on B&B the breakfast being quite basic but found the food served at lunchtime and in the evening very good and excellent value. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it less for families with small children and more to couples and groups of older people who want a quiet relaxing good value break.

Room Tip: We were given a room with a sea view although we didn't specifically request one. The room got t...
