“Fantastic holiday!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

PLEASE READ UNTIL THE VERY END. Many of the reviews I read said that the hotel required quite a bit of TLC as it was very dated - this is entirely true. The interiors could do with a bit of work as the hotel is very very dated. I also read some reviews which said that the beds were quite uncomfortable - also true. HOWEVER, the hotel is spectacularly clean and the rooms are insanely large. The staff are all so incredibly lovely (shout out to Fernando - the guy's a legend) and are always there to help. The swimming pool is delightful, and the hotel boasts lovely views from all around. If you are concerned with modern interiors a memory foam mattresses whilst on holiday - then perhaps you should stay away. But, if you are visiting Albufeira for a delightful holiday with fantastic people in an unbeatable location, the Almar is certainly the hotel for you.

PS. Upon arrival, the receptionist told us that a miscommunication had occurred between our booking provider and the hotel staff. Rather than cancelling our stay (which they easily could have) the Almar upgraded us from a studio apartment to a 1-bed apartment, free of charge. This proves what great people the staff are there. Furthermore, I, somehow, accidentally threw away some Euros. When emptying our bin, the maid found them and returned them to us. The staff really are a credit to this establishment.

Just back from an 11 night stay in the Almar Apartments. The location of the Almar is superb. About 4 to 5 mins walk from the Escalators into Old Town and if you want to pay a few Euro extra you can have a fabulous sea view from your terrace. The apartments are situated in a quiet area so no traffic to spoil your sleep. Beds are firm but not back breakingly hard as some reviewers were saying. Apartments are huge and are cleaned on a daily basis with towels and sheets changed twice a week. Fridge, cooker/microwave toaster etc. Safe available at a charge but no Air Conditioning. Good wifi in lobby, and never came across more helpful staff. Nice freshwater pool and Fernando tries to clean up as best he can after the seagulls every day. Very convenient for shopping as lidl and aldi are about 10 mins walk away, follow the road signs for Portimao and the Continente (a big shopping chain in Portugal) is 5 mins walk away, across from Mc Donalds and KFC. A lot cheaper than the smaller shops. Downside is that the place is dated and really could do with a bit of cosmetic work, (painting, replacing cracked or missing tiles etc) Wouldn't take too much and should be reinvested. Definitely would recommend to stay due to the location as Albuferia is quiet hilly and a lot of people were complaining of needing taxis home every night due to the hills. If I am going again I will stay there. If you want somewhere cheap with beautiful food to eat go to A Fragata across the road. Try the steak or Tuna Steak, or the tourist menu for €11. Fab and won't be beaten for value

Room Tip: Sea view for a fab view of the ocean in the evening

The apartments are the largest I have ever stayed in. We were booked into a sea view, one bedroomed apartment which was huge. There are also studios, two bedroomed apartments and a three bedroomed penthouse apartment. The views are spectacular and you are just a five minute walk to the escalator which takes you down to the Old Town. The apartments although very nice need a good facelift. There were plenty of facilities in our kitchen, but they still needed extra things like small bowls for deserts and kitchen utensils such as a potato masher and a tool for lifting things out off the frying pan, as everything stuck and there was nothing to get them out with. I think every apartment has its own problems and I can only really comment on ours. There is a fabulous swimming pool, but as it is near the sea there is a quite a lot of seagull droppings on the tiles near the pool. These dropping should be scrubbed off every evening which I know is not a nice job, but it does need to be done and it definitely isn't. If you want a swim you must look where you are walking. There are more than enough sunbeds and spaces for everyone and still people put towels out on a morning. There is a small café/bar on sight and the food served is of a good standard as are the drinks. The best thing about these apartments are the staff . There was not one member of staff that was unpleasant or rude at any time. They would do anything for you. The rooms were kept spotless. I must mention the desk staff and of course Fernando in the bar, they were exceptional. These apartments are still good value for money and I'm sure if it was renovated it would be a worthy 4 star. Am I going back next year? DEFINITELY.

Stayed at the Almar with my husband here for 5 nights. Used Yellowfish transfers who provided an excellent service and i would highly recommend and use again.

Service: To start off, thanking Fernando the lovely barman and cook, you made us feel at home..Surrya and the other lovely recepionist who are ever so helpfull and made us feel very welcome at all times. Spot on service from all could not fault or complain about anything. Will miss u guys.. thanku.!

Location: Excellent, few minutes walk to the old town and beach in albufeira. Lots of bar and restuarants to eat out in.. we went to the Bank bar and restuarant on our last night and had a great time..its right in the old town square and very popular..

Room and cleanliness: Clean rooms no issues, nice good size apartments we had the sea view room on the third floor..highly recommend to book seaview rooms and worth the little bit extra.

Value: I would say yes, good value for your money.. the hotel itself i would say needs a bit of TLC however did not really matter to me as it is a clean hotel and provided me with everything i needed during my stay.. The pool area is quite large and has a small pool for the kids too and very clean, hotel was nice and quiet so never had any issues getting any sun loungers.
