“hard beds , soft sand”

Alfagar Apartments

Just back from Alfagar and agree fully about the hard beds, feels like you've slept on the floor after 7 nights of these! However, everything else was either as expected or better.

We had a marvelous time and a beautiful ground floor apartment which included a large patio area with sunloungers etc. Overlooking well tended green area and with sea views.
We were situated close to steep steps leading to the magnificent beach.
The apartment was recently decorated, full kitchen, large lounge area with sat. TV, a spacious bedroom and bathroom.

Steps to the beach were a bit difficult with a 4 year old in tow but well worth the effort. Two paths lead to the beach, both had notices to say that erosion at base had closed the paths and advice from reception was to go by a different route at the side of the property, however after a few days we noticed that the signs were down to the path to the left with plenty of people traffic. We found this route was fine except for a 3 foot ramp at the base put in place instead of eroded final steps, not a problem if you're reasonably mobile.

We found the whole area clean and tidy with well tended gardens and 3 pools.
Kids club was excellent, well staffed , very security and safety concious which put us at ease. There is a reasonable playground area too close by the club. Staff were great and those couple of hours daily without the 4 year old an added bonus!

On site restaurant was good, if a little pricey. Not too much choice locally but plenty of choice if you walk in either direction of reception within 10 minutes or hop in a taxi, ordered at reception.

Bar and entertainment at night kept us amused and happy not to taxi into the main town. Could would have benefited from a bit of kids entertainment a bit earlier but o.k. from 9pm.

Staff were efficient, helpful and friendly.

Its been a while since we were in Portugal having been to Spain,Canaries and Majorca over the past few years, however the lack of Spanish hard sell and laid back nature of this holiday would make us return.

Overall a very pleasant, enjoyable and great value for money holiday.

D. Dublin.

Have to agree with previous reviewer, those beds are rock-hard. Not the orthopedic variety either. I must say that the location more than makes up for them, perched on the clifftops just 5km from the lovely old town. This is ideal for the beach lover as you can walk down to the beach from the resort. However when we stayed the last few steps to the beach were cordoned off. That didn't stop me from sneaking through though. Considering it was so handy for the beach I will give it 8 out of 10, would've been full marks but those beds let it down.

Just returned from our first visit to Portugal. We own a timeshare in Tenerife and booked the Alfagar as an exchange. Although apartment was spacious, fittings etc were not as modern and beds were decidedly hard and uncomfortable. We did have a nice ground floor with views out to sea and only about 25 yards from the upper pool which was very clean with plenty of loungers, although water a bit cold, but it was only early May!

We pre booked a car which enabled exploration of the Algarve coastline. The beaches are truly magnificent.

Other reviews recommend restaurants on the strip, in our view a tacky area, or the old town, lots of choice and very busy.

We would advise turning RIGHT out of the complex and a 10 minute walk toward Olhous de Aqua brings you to a selection of restaurants and the best of these in our opinion O ASSADOR
offers excellent Fish and Steak dishes at better prices than the more commercial areas.

Overall a good holiday. Would we return to Alfagar?...probably not as it is in need of modernisation but gardens and views are lovely.

“As good as my first visit over twelve years ago”

I was a bit concerned about our trip having read other reviews, however we had a lovely week. I would agree that the apartments could do with a little freshening up of the paintwork but I believe refurbishment is ongoing at present. Anyway how long do you spend looking at your apartment walls when you have the sunshine, the stunning gardens and clifftop views and the choice of two pools (plus a childrens pool) and everything else on your doorstep that the Algarve has to offer. The village setting is lovely and the building work for the Algagar 2 whilst ugly from the main road is no problem when you are in the complex. The staff are very friendly and we had a problem with our shower and a wall socket which was fixed within an hour and a half. We also had a fantastic clifftop sea view for no extra cost but either way you have a pool or garden view. This is my second visit to the Alfagar and I cant wait for my third hopefully sometime in the near future.

The room was very big, plenty for 2 adults and 2 small children. We had a newly decorated room, with a nice kitchen, bathroom, good selection of tv channels and dont have to pay like in some hotels. The complex was lovely. It was abit of a trek to the strip, but taxi are only about 4-5 euros. The staff let it down for me, as they werent friendly or helpful and everything seemed to much trouble
