“Low Budget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

Low budget clean hotel, it is what it is, we had room 402 , sea view , Balcony, room cleaned daily, towels changed every other day. No air con but fan provided and a fridge in the room. Breakfast is continental but plentiful. staff are great. Ask at reception for a kettle and you will get one.

Be warned it is only a stones throw from the Town and beaches but it is uphill when returning so walking back in heat can be a sweaty affair.

Enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Go for Balcony sea view and twin or double 402 great

I've stayed there early May and it was really nice. The stuff was really friendly, helpful everytime we had problems or questions. The location, view is outstanding. The hotel can be found easily while driving into Albufeira by car. I recommend the hotel for low/mid budget persons, worth every penny.

Just got back from 8 nights staying in Mar a Vista with my boyfriend and although some might think some aspects of this review are negative we actually had a really good time and would recommend this hotel.

We stayed in room 210 which was on the second floor but downstairs in the hotel as you enter the hotel on the third floor. The room was clean with two single beds pushed together, wardrobes with locks, a safe, televison, a fan, mini fridge, balcony and bathroom. As a self catering option we had hoped for more cooking/food facilities but the one mini fridge limited slightly to only having cold food. The balcony was a reasonable size which we had requested with a table and chairs which we enjoyed sitting at. However no sun reached our balcony and there was no sea view as we were looking onto a courtyard with some trees. But on the other hand, having no sun on the balcony meant our room was cool despite having no air conditioning. The large fan we were provided with was a big help though. We had housekeeping come round every other day and make our beds, change towels and provide toilet roll however thorough cleaning of the bathroom and room isn't done during the stay.
The rest of the staff are very helpful and friendly.
The pool is very small but as most people don't bother with it, you can sometimes get the pool to yourself which feels like a private pool. Also the pool is in a perfect spot all day for sunbathing until about half 5pm when the sun goes in.
The only thing negative about the hotel is how thin the walls are. If anybody is above or next to you, you can hear everything from peeing in toilets to plugging in sockets to the television. Also the doors bang through the night from the wind blowing down the corridors which can be a bit annoying at first but you get used to it throughout the stay.

The location of the hotel is great for the beach and the old town with about a 5 minute walk straight down a hill and steps to the lift to the beach. And a less than 10 minute walk into the centre of town. On the way back there are a lot of hills to climb which could be a struggle for elderly or disabled people but for a young couple we coped fine despite some moaning about the walk home in the heat.

For £262 including flights for a week at the beginning of September we thought our stay was great value for money and can't complain.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony and sea view

Stayed at Mar a Vista for a week with my Girlfriend and really enjoyed it. We requested a sea view room with a balcony and thats what we got, it was fantastic, you can literally see the entire town and for miles along the beach, was beautiful. Couldn't ask for more for the money we paid (room 301).
If you dont mind walking then its fine it takes 5-10 mins walk to the beach (don't even bother with the pool, its more of a glorified paddling pool) and 10-15 mins walk to the Old Town Main Square, but the hills are steep, it would be extremely difficult if you are quite immobile, e.g. in a wheelchair or just fat and lazy.
Its quite a while to the New town, you either have to walk to the main square and get a taxi or walk a bit further and get the Lidl Train (haha) which takes you along the roads and around Albufeira for 2.50euros.

However, there are a couple of downsides, the bathroom smelt of sewage now and then, no matter how much you ran the taps. Also, we had to check out at midday and wanted to take a shower before our flight in the evening so they let us use another room on the other side of the building, this room was awful. If i had paid to stay in that hotel and had that room - 410 i think it was, i would have been so upset. No balcony, just a tiny window, no natural light in the bathroom and black tiling so obviously its really dark, and not a "Mar a Vista" at all just a view of some low rise apartments.

But all in all i really enjoyed my stay here and for a cheap getaway we got exactly what we wanted.

Room Tip: Request a balcony or sea view!!

We stayed at the Mar a Vista for a week at the start of September and overall we had a pleasant stay. We requested a sea view and air con in the room. We had a partial sea view and, although the rooms don't have air con, they provided a fan, which helped a little. The view was great. Despite there not being much sight of the sea, we were overlooking the city and hills. we stayed in room 506 which was the top floor and quite a walk with luggage up some uneven stairs. However, we did seem to have the biggest balcony in the hotel which stretched around a corner and had plenty of space.

The bathroom was just about acceptable. The bath was very dirty and appeared not to be cleaned for our entire stay. The sink and bidet were only slightly better. Some of the towels were stained prior to us using them which was not only unpleasant but also concerning as there is a sign on the bathroom door stating you'll be charged 10 euros for stained towels. Not a very hospitable sign considering their own standard of cleanliness.

The room itself was ok and we also had a fridge which was very handy although it did make the room even hotter, was quite noisy and was not nice to sleep next to at night. We wanted a double room with a double bed but instead we got two single beds pushed together with very hard wood in between.

Breakfast was substantial, not very exciting with just the basics. The staff were friendly but on most days failed to keep up with replenishing the food and cutlery and clearing the tables. The view if you sit outside is great. You can see the sea and the hotel pool (which is tiny).

The beach is quite a distance down the hill from the hotel making it rather difficult to get back up after a long day. Although, we got quite accustomed to doing this walk, children and seniors may not appreciate this walk each day. The beach sand contains a large amount of cracked sea shells so you need to tread carefully. The sea waves are also very strong so I would recommend that you assess the water before rushing in.

Plenty of shops and restaurants are near by but they are very much aimed at tourists with the same type of things but at varying prices. You also need to be aware that some prices include tax and some don't so be sure to check this out to avoid being met with a higher bill than expected like we did!

Public transport from the hotel isn't that convenient with you needing to catch a bus to the main bus station before you can get anywhere. There are also no bus timetables at bus stops making it difficult to plan a journey. We caught a bus to Aqualand but when leaving after 5pm, we were in for a nasty surprise when we discovered there was no bus back meaning we had to walk 10miles (yes, 10miles) to Algarve shopping centre to get a taxi back to the hotel.

Overall we had a nice stay in Albuifera but probably wouldn't go back and would do more research on the hotel location beforehand.

No view, nano-sized TV and a pool in a completely awkward place where everything you see are room windows. This is the best description for this hotel that charges a lot for very little. Rooms are very ugly and I couldnt see the sea, which the hotel name suggests, in portuguese: Mar a Vista = Sea View. They also have an extra charge for rooms with balcony, which looks silly. The morning breakfast is decent, though.
