As you enter the hotel, you will immediately notice the Moorish influences in the architecture, but there is a strong oriental influence to the furnishings.
As mentioned in previous reviews, this hotel is THE hotel to stay at whilst in the Algarve. It has atmosphere, personalised service, the most stunning location, and the only two Michelin star restaurant in Portugal.
When you consider that the price includes half board, the rate is actually very reasonable. (We paid 430Euros/night). The breakfasts were superb, but the evening meals were outstanding. I believe a sign of a good restaurant is not having any salt or pepper condiments on the table, as there is no need because the food is already perfectly seasoned. The evening menu changed nightly; a sample menu from one of our nights (8th May) was Amuse Bouche followed by a choice of either sautéed red mullet fillet on a tomato salad and filled pak choi or salad of pigeon on truffled black salsify and sautéed duck liver. Then a lemon grass soup, which was followed by John Dory with crust of bread and open asparagus. The main course was a choice of crepinette of lamb saddle with artichokes and a pearl onion ragout or saddle of veal with calf’s cheek, celery puree and Madeira sauce. The dessert that night was a mango and chocolate desert done 5 ways or a selection from the cheese trolley. Whatever nights you stay there, I recommend you go for the cheese: the precision with which Diego prepares this in front of you is a treat in itself. On the Carte every night they have two wine recommendations usually in the range of 40Euros.
A point of note is that on Thursday evenings they usually have a “Gala Dinner” which has many more courses, but because of this on Wednesday evenings there is usually less choice with only 3 courses plus the Amuse Bouche. The evening attire is on the smart side of smart-casual.
There are two swimming pools on the property, and this is for a maximum occupancy of 14 suites (all of which are sea facing). The lower pool is heated, and a light a la carte lunch menu is served here between 1pm until 2.30pm. The upper pool at the spa is not heated and this is fantastic for diving into after coming straight out of the hamam or sauna. There is also a Jacuzzi in this area. The spa complex also has a well-stocked gym, and tennis court if you are feeling more energetic. The property has direct access to Gale Beach and every morning before breakfast I went for a 9km run along the waters edge (4.5km of completely deserted fine sand beach until you reach the cliffs).
However the small touches are what set this hotel apart from all others, making it the premier address in Portugal for luxury tourism. Examples include the superb petit-fours left with the turn down service to the plethora of St. Barth and Molton Brown toiletries, and the weekly champagne reception on Tuesday evenings. It is clear that this is a family business and Joy (the owner who took over from her father) is always visible, friendly and helpful. Paulo brings just the correct level of formality to the dining room and ensures the arrival of each course is perfectly choreographed. In contrast to a previous review we found the sommeliers extremely knowledgeable with the wines, and besides why go for ‘world wines’ –drink some of Portugal’s finest regional wines and avoid imported multinational brands, with their associated food miles.
An amazing property and we are already organising our next visit.
Jason
