“My experience of the Auramar.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2008

My partner and I went to the Auramar back in March 2006. It was our first holiday abroad as a couple. We opted to stay all inclusive. For us the food was ideal, a wide variety every day. The location was fantastic over looking the sea. There is an age difference between us but the location was ideal for us both being just a short walk from the strip or the old town. The room was pretty basic but it was all we needed as we don't go on holiday to sit in our room all day! We didn't really need to encounter the staff, although the few times we did they were always polite. It was a shame there wasn't much entertainment in the evenings whilst we were there, but that is the only fault i have with the Auramar. We are back off there this April, which i think says it all :-)

We had an enjoyable stay at the Auramar for 6 days over Christmas. We booked it ourselves and combined it with excellent Jet2 and efficient transfers with Best Days. We left Leeds Bradford at 4.15pm and arrived at the hotel at 7.30pm – fabulous.

The hotel is in a wonderful location overlooking the sea and only 10 – 15 minutes walk along the beach to Albuferia old town, which I loved. In winter there were still some shops and restaurants open and with temperatures running at 18 – 20 it was very pleasant to sit having a coffee at the cafes on Fisherman’s beach.

Now for the Hotel. We booked all inclusive as this was for us an extra break so we had to budget accordingly. We got a great deal so we did not know what to expect. The rooms were quite spacious and clean with a full bath and a sunny balcony. Meals were OK, breakfast and lunch fine but the evening meal could have been a great deal better although there was always the vegetable soup, salad and chips! We had the Christmas Day Gala meal which was surprisingly good, 5 courses hot and tasty, which showed what the chief could do when allowed.

Yes the lobby bar was very smokey but Portugal joins the rest of the ECC on 1st January 2008 when smoking will be banned in public places. Don’t know what will happen to the entertainment and bar arrangements then but it can only improve the area. Speaking of entertainment there was an organist who appeared every day except Sunday who was awful. Well the first two times it was OK and we wanted to dance. As soon as we got going he changed the tempo, played music for his own friends and destroyed the mood. He had a fixed repertoire which after day 3 became irritating then after 5 annoying. I suggest the hotel makes changes here or at least make sure he learns some new tunes or has theme nights. Unlike other reviewers we found the bar drinks OK but the wine was at best variable and sometimes undrinkable.

However you get what you pay for. The staff were friendly and the hotel although a little faded was clean and the pool in an amazing location. We had a great time away in the sun for a bargain price and in a fabulous spot and will definitely be away next Christmas possibly in this hotel if the price is right.

we booked this holiday for 295 per person via teletext holidays and was very happy to pay that. but after talking to other people they were all paying 500 per person per week.hotel is quite clean all over, dont listen to the non smokers out there who complain about the smoke as you cant notice it at all. anyway you cant smoke in the hotel from new years day. breakfast very good but same every other day. food down by the pool is very good and would advice you to have food there, restaurant at night very poor food apart from the xmas night time dinnere that was really good.pool and other activities good mix of all ages.the bar , waiters take there time serveing you and the cue can get really big. size of a beer was pathetic , its about quarter of a pint and you are at the bar every 2 minutes , wine is very weak and local alcohol is very weak. i never drink apart from holidays and i drank from 12 down at the pool bar till 4 and then in the bar from 6 till 11 and was hardly affected by the strength of it all.apart from that if you want to get drunk go to the strip and just go b and b at this hotel, all in all weather at xmas was good , in the 18, 19 . if i had paid 500 each for this i would not have been very happy, but if you gey it cheap as we did you wont mind, old town is 15 minutew walk along the beach and is very nice,

  • Liked — the area and pool to beach walk
  • Disliked — size of the beer and food in restaraunt at night it was crap........

Having stayed at the Auramar about 10 years ago when we found the hotel and food to be of excellent standard we were rather disturbed to read the recent reviews of the hotel. On arrival we were given a room in A block on the second floor. It had been raining some 4 days before we arrived and when we entered the room water was pouring through the ceiling. We went back to reception and were given another room again in A block but on the 3rd floor. This room was dry but it was obvious it had not been used for some time as it was very dirty. Went to reception again who promised housekeeping would be coming to clean the room. This was done within the next hour so we were quite happy to stay in this room. The room itself was large enough but as other guests have remarked the whole hotel is in need to updating and redecoration. The food was very basic on the whole but we did stay over the Christmas period and the hotel put on a Gala Meal for Christmas Day (extra charge made) but this meal was excellent, with free wine. If the hotel put this sort of meal on all the time I am sure they would attract more guests. We did find that most guests were
on all inclusive which is perhaps the market they are looking for. The
hotel is in a fantastic location and it is quite easy to walk into Albuferia either along the beach (tide permitting) or you could take the hotel bus or there is a land train. The weather when we arrived and all week was excellent. If you are looking for a cheap hotel in a great location then the Auramar is for you

returned from alumar 18/11/2007 found food not of a very good quality, menu very poor with no variation ,breakfast alternates every day. day 1-fried egg smoked streaky bacon, with boiled eggs and cereal, day -2 scrambled egg sausage, etc. day 3 as day 1 etc.
lunch at the pool bar if you want to walk the 73 steps plus ramps from main hotel to it, every day hamburger& chips, basic salad (limp lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and ham) vegetable soup, fish and the speciality of the day cheapest cuts of meat chicken etc
evening meals were not much better again poor selection of main courses with the favourite fish on every night, spagetti bolognaise on most nights one other course, vegetable soup, hamburgers and chips, not a very good selexction on sweet counter unless you liked cake, and were very patient to scrape layers of ice cream out of tubs (really well frozen)
Nightly entertainment sunday traditional dancers (not bad) got guests involved
Monday to Saturday local singer singing same songs every night set your clock for rivers of babylon 9.30
struggle to get drinks at bar 2 behind bar only one serves at a time other potters around collecting glasses washing them and spinning bottles, when he serves other one takes over collecting glasses so be prepared to wait. would not return to this hotel ever again and would rate as 2 star which is being generous

We have just arrived back from Auramar Beach Resort, and we had a fantastic time. Would go back again.
We stayed in B Block and had stunning views over the sea, the room was basic but clean. My only moan was that there was no kettle, you did however have a little stove and pans so not a complete problem. The fridge came in very useful for the wine and beer.
A cleaner came in every day and changed the towels and made the beds.
The receptionist, Carmen was friendly and quite helpful and we had a few laughs with her.
We stayed B&B, the food was ok but not much of a choice with chips every day. Food was hot and filling though as we ate out every night.
The best places to eat and drink were Wild and Co, on the Strip and Rock Cafe in the old town. Both were easily accessible and friendly. Taxi into the old town was about 4 Euros and the Strip was about a 10 minute walk. Most of the bars and restaurants do close at the beginning of November though, so be warned that not much to do in the evenings. The hotel entertainment was not the best, good old Fernando!
The pool was clean but very cold so most of our time was spent in the sea. The sea and beach was great but the waves and undercurrents were very strong. Not ideal for kids.
Overall a fantastic holiday and would go back.

We first stayed at the Auramar in 1986 (our Honeymoon) in those days it was a 4* and was about 3 years old.

We have stayed there 2-3 times a year over the last few years so we think we are qualified to state our opinion accurately.

The Hotel is now out of date and it shows, rooms are basic and are really 2*, the food IS terrible, the same badly cooked and presented rubbish is offered via a buffet every day. In the morning drinks (coffee & orange coloured water) are free but in the evening the drinks machines are turned off and the waiters try to sell you wine, water etc.

For breakfast we stick to the items that the staff do not prepare Cereal, Yogurt etc in the Evening we often eat out even though we are half board.

The restaurant staff are indifferent to your well being, twice I reported hairs in the food and was told “what’s the problem your meals are free”!!

It is rumoured that what isn’t eaten for breakfast is reshaped for the “all-inclusive” lunch, we can’t verify this as we don’t buy all inclusive.

The grounds are pleasant enough, but beware, you can be asleep on a lounger and the gardeners think nothing of waking you and moving you so they can take hours to cut the lawns with petrol mowers (exhaust and noise).

Often the sprinklers will come on in the middle of the day soaking the terraces and the occupants without warning and no matter how many time you report this nothing is done, therefore it is up to you to find the stop-cock and do it yourself.

Unless you are all inclusive you cannot get a drink before 16:00, then the drinks are 220% more expensive than local bars (a pint of Super Bock locally is 1.5€). There is a bar just outside the Hotel the barmen are friendly, but this year the prices have gone up to almost the same as the Hotel.

The staff are a bit offish but when compared to the overall quality of the Hotel there attitude is about right, we think in general most of the staff are depressed.

Why do we keep going back? The location for us is perfect, almost on the Beach, 10 mins walk to the Strip and 30 min walk along the Beach to Albufeira (old town), the views are magnificent and the Beach never gets overcrowded.

If you are thinking of booking don't expect too much and you will probably won't be dissapointed.
