“Conveyor belt tourism? Yes, but I can live with that...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

Back to Salgados after a week in Dunas Suites in late July, so comparisons are inevitable. This time we were just Dad and 13yo son for 5 nights. Other reviewers have provided a lot of detail, so here are pros and cons from our perspective:

Room layout worked well - usual firm CS bed and good pillows, big walk in shower, good tv choice (included Fuel.tv - skate/surf/bmx channel - very popular with son).
Housekeeping good - complete no later than 2pm every day.
No problems with sun beds except when arriving late pm (this is down to majority of guests being Portuguese or Spanish, so have all (wisely) taken a break during hottest part of the day). Always managed to get 2 though.
Pools in usual CS format - circular, 2 adult, one kids. Adult ones are 1.5m/1.8m deep - plenty of room.
Very fast internet in reception areas - often up to 30mb
Handy pool bar
Only 10 mins from Salgados beach (turn right leaving main entrance hall, walk down the slope, turn left and then right past the (currently closed) driving range, turn left as path reaches back of 18th green and cross small wooden bridge into villa area. Walk up to main road and turn right past security. Go left and roundabout, cross road and walk between Vidamar and Dunas Suites (sign to Sabor a Mar Restaurant) and boardwalk is 50m up path. On return, don't forget to walk up Lota 2a in the villas or you'll spend ages trying identical ones with no wooden bridge at the end!)
Many helpful and friendly staff, particularly if you return the courtesy
Wide range at breakfast - decent (if unspectacular) range at dinner
The Douro (red wine) served at dinner is really quite good....

Plates cold = cold food.
Surprisingly large amount of canned fruit. Why? No canned fruit in sight during 7 days in Dunas Suites, in comparison.
Dining felt less "special" - down to the format of the room more than anything else
No in room internet - I think this is a bit lazy as the phone is an internet device (VOIP) and was working. We were on 2nd floor so could get 1-2mb of signal from the wifi most of the time.
Many "trainees". You could spot the experienced staff easily - they were a blur of action all the time. The rest wandered around aimlessly unless under direction from managers. There's room for improvement here, as it does affect the overall impression of the hotel.

Overall, we really enjoyed the visit. It's clear that the budget is tight and that CS management is being very cautious. We paid £415 each for 5n half board from Manchester, inclusive of flights. By comparison, the Lake Resort would have been £900 each. You pay your money and take your choice. Be prepared to accept the odd compromise here and there and this is a good value hotel.

I'm not sure if the cavernous conference centre will ever work economically for CS, and it's clear that much of the hotel design is there to support conference visitors, of which there don't seem to be many. That said, holidaying visitors benefit from the room design, which feels to be a higher fit standard than the Dunas Suites.

We'd go back, for sure......

Room Tip: We were in the cheap seats (facing the resort), but we only used the room to rest and sleep, so we s...

We stayed in the sister hotel in the algarve 3 years ago, and it was a really good experience, so we unfortunately booked this one without looking at the reviews on here, we new the hotel had gone into receivership, but had hoped it was all ok. The hotel it's self is ok, the rooms are good, very comfortable beds, but the food is 3 star, no thought gone into it at all, it's a buffet with about 6 choices, which is cold by the time you walk back to your table. Breakfast is even worse, stone cold, and I have never stayed in a 5 star hotel, and not even asked if we would like tea or coffee at the table, you have to get your own. The staff cannot be bothered to do a thing. We checked out after a day, an will never return. Do not waste your hard earned money coming here

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We stayed 4 nights in august '13 in this recently renovated 5 stars hotel
The experience left me with with mixed feelings:
- rooms: very spacious and comfortable. Clearly the highlight of the hotel. With a nice balcony (no chairs or table though !), recent flat TV with 70+ channels, bathroom partly open to the room, 5 stars bathrobes...
- location: OKish, or it depends what you're looking for. It's an out-of-the-city resort (10-15 min by car to Albufeira), you need 10 minutes walk to the beach crossing the resort.
-facilities: biggest issue. Basically there's a bar with some live music, a giant buffet dining room, and a snack close to the pool. The 3 pools are sort of small (way smaller than the pictures would lead you to think). The hotel is right in front of the golf practice, so close that you actually have the huge security net 10 m from the pools !! Spoiling the view
-decoration: modern, but too minimalist and a little cheap. All the walls are simply painted, and covered with wall paper featuring sepia giant beach pictures. Furniture is limited and the same everywhere (rooms, lobby, bar...).
-buffet: the strict minimum for a 5 star hotel. The diversity and choice is sort of there, but don't expect very fine cuisine, of fancy "verrines" for desert. Atbdinner, the deserts were aweful and the entrees just acceptable (let's say they're Portugal standard = very average)

All in all, my conclusion is that it's a mass tourism 5 star hotel. The group CS has 4 of these a few km apart, all with the same architecture, same decoration and furniture, same rooms... So everything is there-ish but it just lacks that special attention you look for when in a 5 stars.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

We arrived 3 weeks after the hotel has been reopen (so we were told). First impression was very good. The hotel reception was very grand and the receptionist (sofia) was very welcoming and helpfully. She actually took us up to our room and gave us all the information we needed to find our way around the hotel and its facilities. The room (4th floor) seemed grand with amazing views of the pools, golf course and the sea from balcony. One criticism though, we didn't like the layout of the room with the sink (bad design, by the way) being outside the bathroom with no privacy. The room had twin bed, table and chairs, mini bar, kettle and cups, (only 2 bags of tea and sugar provided),safe, tv and Internet access (bring your own Ethernet cable) they were many tv reception issues and Internet was down quite a bit though wireless connection in lobby area was working. They were 2 extra large bathrobes &slippers provided and bathroom toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, short cup, toothbrush and paste etc. there was no bath, only wet room and separate toilet which was ok for us. We booked breakfast with our stay which we found to be of low quality in choice, quality and quantity. The hot section was never hot and scrabbled eggs were soggy & cold. Not enough vegetable. Out of the 6 nights that we stayed we had dinner in the hotel 4 times and mostly because we were limited for choice. The hotel is located a fair distance from Albufaira (nearest town) a cab fare will set you back about €10 - €15 and the trip will take about 15-20 minutes. Although you are in a small resort with other hotels and residential houses, you need to know your options and this information was not available to us. The hotel 2nd restaurant was not open yet, so this option was not available to us. We ordered room service one of the nights as we didn't like the set daily dinner menu (only two choices every day) just to find out that there wasn't even a room service extension. You had to call reception and they got the kitchen to call you back to take the order. The food arrived cold, but we were too hungry to bother with complaining. The pool bar offered light meals till 6pm with no huge choice but food was tasty enough. One other option for nice food, though mainly sea food is the beach restaurant about 15-20 minute walk from the hotel. (By the way, there is no direct path to the beach from the hotel. One needs to walk through around the next door properties to reach the beach with no signs directing you) drinks in the bars are quite expensive ranging from €4for soft drinks to €7 or €8 for an alcoholic drink. The hotel has 2 adult pools and one for kids. The spa facilities will set you back €10 for use of indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi which wasn't working, for some reasons. Treatments of course is extra and not cheap either. The gym facility was not available yet, nor the pool room. Entertainment consisted of a singer while you are having dinner and nothing else, so if you are looking for night life, this hotel is not for you, or you'll be spending your money and time travelling back and forth to Albufaira. The near by beach is beautiful, clean with loungers for hire - €7.5 each. Restaurant, kiosk, bathroom,Thai massage, Jet ski, pedal boats and more. Like I said before it's not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as its a bit of a walk from the hotel, especially on a hot day. FYI the nearest ATM is a couple of miles. Away from the hotel, so you either bring cash from home, wait till you visit the town to withdraw money, use your card in the hotel bars and restaurant or run a tab by charging to the room. The hotel was very clean and the rooms were done daily with change of towels etc. for some reason on our first day, one of the bathrobes was taken and not replaced, but it wasn't much of an issue as I brought one with me. Overall, we did enjoy our stay but for a 5 star hotel, they was too many things that were not quite enough, not to mention that too many facilities were not available as the hotel was obviously not ready to be opened.
The one thing we really want to praise is the reception staff who were very helpful, welcoming and friendly. Thank you to Sofia, Lilliana, Joel and Rui!

We had lovely rooms, enjoyed the pools and the easy access to the beautiful beaches...
Nice food...especially great choice for breakfast...

Pool rules about not swimming after certain hours a little odd - especially if it's a conference venue and people can't swim till later... perhaps rules could allow group swimming under own responsibility later in the evening...a pity not to enjoy those led lit waters that look so inviting

Not very teenage friendly and our teenage children are well behaved and are always complimented on their behaviour. They were being judged against the behaviours of other children in the past without even being given a chance. Eventually staff thawed to them.

Stayed with friends. Food is top drawer (although we counted only 16 people stayning!) good choices and varieties. 3 euros for a cup of hot water and a tea bag in the loung bar is a tad expensive! One of our party left a sweater in the restaurant never to be seen again. The Hotel staff did not show any enthusiasm to try and locate it.

Hotel is in a quiet relaxing location & is ideal if not paradise for golfers, beach is 10 mins away and is really nice, the area surrounding the hotel doesnt have much to offer but its an easy commute to albufeira approx 15 mins away. the hotel rooms are stunning, large, clean and very comfortable beds (one of the best) and as for the shower, its a huge wet room with the most amazing shower ever. overall i enjoyed this hotel and would return, the only down side which let it down was the food especially at breakfast time it was always cold, evening meal was much better.
