“Holiday Village Balaia”

Wouldnt go again there were families fighting at the bar throwing chairs and tables were children were present in prams, police were called twice, food in eating hall everything was luke warm food, sunbeds worn out and collapsed in centre !
Staff were friendly, i felt sorry for elderly barmaid takeing verbal abuse every night, this is not a quiet place to stay theres hundreds of screaming kids and babies running up and down outside apartment hallways from 6.30am onwards ! TV was ok plenty of channels, maids were ok also. Meals times is like being back at school only twice as loud with babies and kids screaming like mad.
This aint 4 star more like 2 and half to 3. Lifts are too small and always breaking down.

Room Tip: Go closer to the old town if you dont have kids as its a good 20 min walk to the strip, and 50 mins...

Booked a fairly last minute holiday with a friend and we got a week stay from 22th-29th August for under £1000 all inclusive. We were aware the hotel was mainly for families but we had a great, relaxing holiday. The pools were big and spacious and we were always able to get a sunbed easily at the main pool or at Colina 2. We stayed in Colina 2 which we preferred but the walk to Colina 2 may put some people off, it didn't bother us though. The food was really good and there was always a good selection at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Restaurant did get quite busy and the only slight downside was kids getting the buffet and wasting a lot of food. We ate at the Italian restaurant once which was also good. The drinks were Ok as long as you didn't go for the ore mixed cocktails. The fruit juice at breakfast was also a bit strong and the milk seemed to be a bit warm. It would be good if there could be more, or even faster, water machines. The rooms were very clean and a good size. There is also British tv which we watched getting ready. The only downside is there could be a bit more adult entertainment as the only thing available at night is the quiz at 11pm. The other entertainment is a bit cheesy and aimed at kids. Having said that the reps work extremely hard and seem to be doing a great job. As mentioned, the hotel is a bit out of the way but we already knew that and didn't mind. We got the free minibus to the beach a few times and went into albufeira at night quite a few times. The bus into albufeira is only 2 euros and a taxi is about 6, well worth a visit to the old town. Overall a very good, relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Colina 2 is quieter but only stay there if you are able to walk up quite a steep hill.

spent a week here 5th sept to 12th 2013. the hotel is very clean ,staff are all helpful and the pools and childrens areas and entertainment are excellent.we were on the all inclusive option and were not impressed with the food. there is a good variety of dishes but all are served in a buffet style resturant under lamps which didnt keep the food hot enough.bread and cake are left on opendishes so consequently are dry by the time anyone wants to eat them.the location is a little too far to albuferia old town to walk but only cost 8 euros each way by taxi. the beaches are fabulous around balaia . i still think for families this hotel is good value but if you are going as an older couple i would probably not opt for all inclusive as the food is not great.

Room Tip: block 2 roadside is well away from entertainment venues and the only noise is a little passing traff...

Just stayed 29th Aug to 12th Sept with our two boys 5 and 6 and had a great time.

The staff, both local and First Choice, were all excellent and having stayed at 5 star hotels previously that had some really miserable staff this was a really pleasant place to stay.

I've never felt the presence of so many holiday company representatives be they ents staff, holiday reps, kids creche or football/swim coaches and they all seem to be having a good time, enjoying themselves, enjoying what they're doing and supporting one another. It rubs off of the guests and everyone seems to feel relaxed as a result. The entertainment for the kids isn't high brow by any means but the kids love it and it's amusing enough for the adults. The key is just to get stuck in and not be afraid of making a bit of a fool of yourself.

People moaning about a cold pool need to man up. It was a bit fresh on entry but once you were in it was pleasant enough to stay and play for ages. Perhaps those with 0 - 36 months might need something warmer.

The rooms were spacious and clean and barring some 1st floor rooms in the low numbers everyone had a sea view in Colina 1. Colina 2 was much quieter and yes the steps up from Colina 2 to the restaurant, with buggies or for the elderly, were a bit of challenge but seriously, as with the pool temperature, those moaning need to man up.

The food was excellent with only the odd day when it was obviously yesterdays offerings re-hashed but there was always something to chose and again it was better than many 5 star hotels in which we've stayed. As a meat lover the choice was excellent. There are kids everywhere and so looking before you turn to avoid collision is a must but it's a kids hotel so the odd spillage or dropped food is to be expected. I have to say everyone, bar none, was very polite and made the necessary apologies for an enthusastic child bumping into you as we did to others.

The lifts by mini bus to the beach and back, (leaving at 10.00am and returning at 1.00pm) were a brilliant touch, meaning on AI you didn't miss breakfast or lunch, had your few hours on the beach and came back before it got too hot. Spot on, especially if you have both beach and pool lovers in your party!

Criticisms and what stops it from being a 4 star are that:-

(1) The gym is woeful, (downstairs, no windows, a rowing maching and a few bits of antiquated kit)

(2) The orange juice and coffee in the restaurant were cheap and nasty and in contrast to everything else. I can't imagine the cost of improving the quality here would greatly inflate prices.

(3) The slides in the water park were limited for more adventurous kids. Everything was really geared towards 0 - 36 months and of the two big slides, one wasn't really working properly and the other was still pretty tame for thrill seekers.

(4) The outside area of the bar where people were smoking is right next to the outside area of the restaurant meaning it could be very unpleasant eating outside with those doing the smoking not giving a monkeys that people were tring to eat within a few feet. The volume of smokers was also an issue as the pool tables, predominantly played on by the kids, were also in that outside bar area so smoke tended to waft across there as well. The space is limited so I can't see what they can do about it but it definitely needs looking at.

My understanding is that some of the other HV's, particularly those labelled 5 stars, are better and we'd definitely look at those because the HV concept is great for kids but if you holiday here you'll have a good time anyhow.

Room Tip: Buy water at the shop and top up as you go

My family and I have returned from a holiday in the Holiday Village Algarve. Overall the holiday worked out well and was enjoyable. The flight across and transfer times were fine. The hotel itself is broken down into two blocks , block one is the activity area and block two is quieter(a steep set of steps away) and has much better bar/lunch food. Our room was spacious , clean, well kept and had a nice view, but it was a bit noisy till about 1130 at night times as block 1 had a bar area. The staff were top class from reception to the activity staff, and helped make the holiday. A seperate mention to the football academy teachers, particularly Steve who was excellent.Location is fine as there is a lovely small beach about a ten minute walk away, with a lovely sea food restaurant and water sports.Short taxi fare to Albuifera and Villamoura. The two main negatives for me were firstly you had to pay for small items like rental of the the tennis court, wifi , calling of taxis etc and secondly and more importantly the food overall was very poor and I am not a foodie. The food in block 2 i.e the bar food was fine and you can eat in the restaurant there twice in the week as well. I intend going back to a holiday village as we enjoyed it, but not the Algarve

Room Tip: Block one has the sea views and is near the activity areas. Block two is quieter with nicer bar food...
