“Marvao lovely, Pousada well situated but don't eat there!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

This lovely hilltop walled village is one of the prettiest in Portugal and really worth a detour. The Pousada is magnificently situated with huge views over the valley at breakfast. Rooms comfortable and the breakfast good, but dinner at the overpriced restaurant was very disappointing as was the wine recommended.
There is a dear little bar up by the castle which is lovely to sit by in the evening. Spectacular view.

Location: very interesting. Medieval walled castle on highest point in Portugal very near Spanish border.. Hotel is within walled perimeter. All roads within are cobbled and very narrow. Very quaint. Steeped in history. Fantastic panoramic views. We loved walking along the ramparts but english H & S officers would get the screaming habdabs at the lack of safety railings! But thats why its quaint and interesting - its as it was a couple of hundered years ago. Go see it before some idiot falls off and they close it down! Wouldn't need more than 2 nights to see everything though. Only has 2 or 3 places outside the hotel to eat and the only shops (about 4) are art and curio shops. Hotel is absolutely charming. Low wooden ceilings in the corridors, nooks and crannies and small windows opening onto courtyards set the scene. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Bedroom was well appointed, clean and comfortable and unlike a previous reviewer if you sit in the bar or lounge you get free wifi. Couldn't fault the place. Very enjoyable. Hotel is totally in keeping with the location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view before you book. Some rooms face other close-by building. Wouldn't re...

The building and town for this accommodation is one of the most attractive we visited during our trip through Spain. It's not easy to get to but is worth the effort. Being in the heart of the town it is an easy walk to everything and walking at night through the streets had a magical feeling about it. The hotel is a collection of connected buildings and it seems to work well. Our room looked a bit old and worn but was comfortable. We slept well. Breakfast in the dining room was good and enhanced by the fantastic view. At night, we ate at several other restaurants nearby and thought they were reasonably priced with a satisfactory variety of dishes, well presented and tasty food. The local castle/fortress is a must visit and there is a small but very attractive garden nearby where you can rest and soak up the view. Overall, a very satisfying several days.

The hilltop village of Marvão is a magnificent attraction (one of the 21 "Wonders of Portugal") & boasts several places to stay and having visited several other Pestana Pousadas already I looked no further when booking a weekend away in Marvão.
One appreciates that the pricing policy is set by the Pestana Group head office and the hotel staff have to valiantly try to supply services to justify the price paid by their guests but the amenities & facilities and especially the standard of food just do not meet expectations.
The staff are cheerful & friendly, the place is clean, neat & tidy but the "superior" room only left me wondering just how minuscule must the standard room be!
Checking rates at other hostelries in Marvão, I find that the Pousada Santa Maria is 25%/30% more expensive....and it simply isn't worth it!

Fantastic location - great fort (open to 9pm) - worth paying extra for room with a view. Bit windy driving there but well signposted.

Pretty quiet when we stayed there - possibly an indication of local economic climate I fear as it a great place to stay for a night.

Room Tip: pay extra for a room with a view - it' about an extra €30

... we missed out when we stayed here three ago, but got one this time around. Spectacular!

The restaurant, and most of the public rooms face out in the same direction (east). Unlike many of Portugal's pousadas, the site is not a castle, monastery, or grand building, but a sequence of converted modest white stucco residences on both sides of a very narrow village street. Getting an auto thru to the hotel from the tight squeeze of the village portal gate is an olympic level challenge. The hotel has remained as we remembered it, but the village itself has upgraded most of the tourist attractions: the lovely gardens, the parish churches, and the castle ... well done, yet the tourists were not around when we visited in late June so we had the hotel and its surroundings to ourselves!

The views of the valley and walking distance to the castle and convent make this a cosy stop in MARVAO. Do try the chestnut and split pea soup that was so good I had it two nights in a row! Our only complaint about the 2 Pousadas we've stayed in so far is the weak wifi system. Ad the vinho verde was one of the best!
