“A slice of the good life”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

George and Irene are the most friendly hosts you could imagine. Eating breakfast in their family kitchen (our choice) was a privilege. We wanted to walk, so Irene escorted us to drop the car at the end point so we wouldn't have to walk home. As for the chalet, what a fascinating place. We could have listened to George's enthusiasm and knowledge on the building of this chalet for hours. It was so comfortable, exquisitely decorated and had everything you could possibly want. The view from the deck was priceless, watching the setting sun on the far horizon with a view that went on for what seemed to be hundreds of miles. Then the star light, amazing. We did not want to leave and would love to return one day.

We had some difficulty finding the place. But if we would have followed their instructions (that we got in the email) from the beginning, it wouldn't have been a problem, but I trusted my GPS more. My mistake.

Once there they showed us our very nice studio, with a patio with a great view. We were told about the area and the good restaurants around. WiFi worked very fast. At night we could see many stars and it was very quiet. Irene did some special efforts to make a tasty breakfast for our 3 year old.

Our only regret is that we only stayed for one night.

The property is very hard to find, but Jorge's directions after a phone call were excellent. Don't try to arrive after dark.

After you arrive, Jorge attempts to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. He treats you like a family member, one that you like ;>). I was looking for a restaurant with regional cuisine and Jorge gave me directions and called the restaurant to order the food. (The family-owned restaurant treated me like a king.)

The other reviews do an excellent job of presenting the property and are accurate.

His homemade juice of orange, carrot and lemon is excellent. When I return to the area, I would definitely stay again.

We had no idea what to expect but we were so taken with the studio that George and Irene have converted. It provided plenty of space, including the patio area outside that just draws you to enjoy the vast vista. The bed was luxurious making it hard to leave in the morning. We wished we could have stayed longer and shared more of their beautiful area. The hospitality shown was just so special which made our very short stay an indelible memory of our Portugal holiday.

Room Tip: We couldn't believe George and Irene had children upstairs- they were SO QUIET! :-)

Imagine a house built on a hill with a 180 degrees unobstructed view towards the undulating Portuguese landscape. Add the hosts, a couple with a passion for the region, local food and environment and add as well Bobby, the dog, vying for attention. That is the magic recipe for Quinta do Marvao, located in the countryside a few kilometers outside Marvao. We enjoyed our stay very much. The region is very beautiful and makes for endless tours or walks.

George and Irene are two of the nicest and most interesting people one would meet, and they have a wonderful finca nestled on the side of the mountain, with breathtaking day and night views right from the balcony. We stayed for two nights in the eco-cabin, which we found spacious and well-equipped, with a delightful artistic flair. Our four-year old daughter fell in love with the cabin, asking "Can this be our home?" You will not be disappointed, this will be an experience you will never forget. One of those places that you are sad to leave.

To be honest, Marvao was not initially on our list of must see places in Portugal. We had a lot of other places we wanted to see, and we added one night at Quinta do Marvao at the last minute, which we found to be reasonably priced. Finding the place is one of those great travel stories, as we had forgotten to print out the email that had the directions, but we found our way through a little tiny town, winding through remote roads with sheep crossing them at dusk, and entered into the most magical part of our two week trip. This whole area is a beautiful, in some ways reminiscent of Santa Fe NM, but with medieval castles perched on hilltops. The Alentejo is a relatively unspoiled part of Portugal, and Marvao and nearby Castelo de Vide are unspoiled parts of the Alentejo. As for Quinta do Marvao...... We loved everything about our stay, and the only regret is not staying longer. Our room in the old school teachers digs, very tastefully converted, was great, but after checking out the new strawbale guesthouse I'm thinking that would be my first choice next time we visit. The place is perfect for people who like to be in a natural setting, with engaging hosts who know a lot about the area and are enthusiastic and genuinely interesting.
